History & Background “CREOLE SHAKE” Below is a little history about the four new rhythms you will learn in this session! ZOUK is a fast tempo carnival style of music originating from the Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. French Antilles Kassav popularized this fast style that lost ground in the late 80s.Zouk means festival, well-named because it uses carnival rhythms and contains West African influences. 2 2013 ZUMBA INSTRUCTOR CONVENTION – CREOLE SHAKE BOUYON is a form of popular music of Dominica which became popular in the late 1980s. Bouyon music is a mix of traditional and modern music, and is popular across much of the Caribbean. The best-known band in the genre is Windward Caribbean Kulture (WCK), who originated the style in 1988 by experimenting with a fusion of Cadence-Lypso and Jing ping. While the Cadence-Lypso sound is based on the use of acoustic drums, an aggressive up-tempo guitar beat and strong social commentary in the native Antillean language, this new music created by WCK focused more on the use of technology with a strong emphasis on keyboard rhythmic patterns. GWO KA is both a family of hand drums and the music created with them, which is a major part of Guadeloupian folk music. Rural Guadeloupans still use gwo ka drums in communal experiences called Lézow; this is the most traditional manifestation of gwo ka in modern Guadeloupe. Gwo ka is also played at Carnival and other celebrations. A modernized and popularized form of gwo ka is well-known on the islands; it is known as gwo ka moderne. COMPAS is a modern Meringue, the national music genre of Haiti that people have been dancing and singing since the 1800s. Popularized by Haitian sax and guitar player JB Nemour in 1955, Compas is the main music of many countries such as Martinique, Guadeloupe, Dominica, etc. Application of the Zumba® Formula For the Creole routines that you will create for your classes, you will need to follow the Zumba® Formula that you learned in your B1 training. The Zumba® formula is the key to a successful class and should always be applied even when incorporating new dance styles such as Zouk or Bouyon.
