Revolutionary Drama in Postcolonial Nigeria: the Theatre of Femi REVOLUTIONARY DRAMA IN POSTCOLONIAL NIGERIA: THE THEATRE OF FEMI OSOFISAN by Chima Julius Osakwe A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies University of Toronto © Copyright by Chima Osakwe (2014) Abstract Revolutionary Drama in Postcolonial Nigeria: The Theatre of Femi Osofisan Chima Julius Osakwe, Doctor of Philosophy (2014) Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies University of Toronto This work examines the use of theatre as an instrument of socio-political revolution in selected works (Morountodun, The Chattering and the Song, No More the Wasted Breed, and Aringindin and the Nightwatchmen) by Femi Osofisan. Osofisan is the indisputable leader of Nigeria‘s second generation of playwrights. Driven by Marxist ideology, this generation, which also includes Bode Sowande and Kole Omotoso among others, rose to prominence in the 1970s after the nation‘s civil war. Since then, it has continued to produce revolutionary dramatic works calling for the immediate transformation of Nigeria‘s repressive socio-political order. Although the concept of revolution as dramatized in the works of these playwrights has been influenced by the political notion of revolution, especially the Marxist notion that revolution is the substitution of one ruling class for another after a class struggle resulting in the enthronement of communism, my study‘s theorizing of revolutionary drama has not been strictly determined by the political theory of revolution. The most important criterion used to determine what constitutes revolutionary drama in this study is the liberatory intent rather than the actual liberation accomplished in a given play, although the selected Osofisan titles all conclude with the liberation of the oppressed. ii As the most prominent member of Nigeria‘s second-generation playwrights, Osofisan has produced works that are widely considered paradigmatic articulations of revolutionary theatre. Mindful of the fact that his works have yet to precipitate a revolution, and eager to investigate why, I examine his language, performance venues, dramatic techniques, reception, politics and ideology. Acknowledging that the perception of a direct link between theatre and revolution appears to be exaggerated and misguided, I also cite several other dramatists, playtexts and theatrical experiences from around the world to argue that the potential of theatre as an indirect or contributory instrument of revolution may not be completely discounted. My study concludes by validating the study of theatre as a force for socio-political change and suggesting strategies by which Osofisan‘s revolutionary theatre could actually inspire social transformation in postcolonial Nigeria. iii Dedication To every individual of any cultural background, dead or alive, who may or may not have suffered persecution but has dedicated their life or used their talents or resources to champion the cause of the underprivileged. iv Acknowledgements I have inevitably incurred a debt of gratitude while completing this work. Professor Kortenaar and Professor Li always read my entire drafts with minimum delay and provided constructive feedback that assisted me in my revisions. Both of them also found time to engage me in one-on-one conversations geared towards the improvement of my work. And my general meetings with the entire committee members were characterized by fruitful and productive discussions that immensely benefitted my work. Each member of my committee also contributed significantly in improving my knowledge of postcolonial theory and literature in the courses I took with them. Like the three-man committee, the three interviewees for this dissertation, Professors Femi Osofisan and Eugene van Erven and Mr. Sudhanva Deshpande were wonderfully cooperative. The Osofisan interview was the high-point of my research trip to Nigeria. I am very grateful to Professor Osofisan for finding time for a particularly marathon chat that covered various aspects of his dramaturgy. I am also indebted to Professor Van Erven and Mr. Deshpande, both of whom granted me impromptu interviews upon my arrival in the Netherlands for a research fellowship at Utrecht University. Professor Andrew Buckland, Mr. Robert Haxton v and Ms. Sophie Marcus also deserve to be thanked for granting me permission to use some production pictures of some of Osofisan‘s plays or for facilitating the process leading to the granting of permission. I am highly grateful to the Chair of the Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies, Professor Stephen Johnson. My studies benefitted from his caring and compassionate disposition. He was quite supportive and repeatedly encouraged my effort to complete the program sooner than later. His approach and responses to all matters related to my studies gave me the effect of a healing spiritual tonic. Under Professor Johnson‘s leadership, the Drama Centre provided me with some financial assistance that enabled me to undertake some research trips in connection with my dissertation. The paper notes the centrality of the implied in the thematic analysis of the texts. Such disparity is influenced by the ideological perspectives of both literary giants and of course due to the generational gap between them. The paper juxtaposes the traditional perspective from which Wole Soyinka presents The Strong Breed with the Marxist perception which dominates Femi Osofisan’s No More the Wasted Breed. Apparently, the strong belief of Wole Soyinka in the inviolability of the gods and in the irrevocability of destiny is unarguably well delineated, which Osofisan finds offensive, unpleasant and unacceptable.

    “KILL THE FATHER”: SOYINKA’S AESTHETICS AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE FOR OSOFISAN’S DRAMATURGY. By Bosede Afolayan, Department of English, University of Lagos Nigeria Abstract The influence of Wole Soyinka on the “second generation” writers in Nigeria, of which Osofisan is its most prolific, is immense. Osofisan developed under the tutelage of Soyinka but has reached maturation by sharply deviating and departing from the philosophy and dramaturgy of Wole Soyinka whom he considers “the master.” To come to his own, he has to literally “kill the father” in order to achieve his prime. Sigmund Freud’s theory of the oedipal Complex becomes relevant especially in the view it lends to our study. Freud believes that the young man achieves adulthood only when he is able to exorcise the spirit of the father. Osofisan has been an ardent follower and critic of Soyinka’s art. Where Soyinka’s predilection has been in the area of exposing the culture of the people and in metaphysical profundity, Osofisan has been Marxian, materialist and revolutionary. However, Soyinka's aesthetics remains the point of departure for his art. This paper examines the nature of the influence Soyinka represents for Osofisan. It explores the point of departure from Soyinka’s aesthetics and concludes with Osofisan’s ability to carve a niche for himself as the most strident, most revolutionary, most “angry” and the most inter-textual of the generation after Soyinka. References would be made to a number of their plays in the course of our discussion to illustrate our argument.     157 The Black Power Movement in Trinidad and Tobago Jerome Teelucksingh ABSTRACT The article examines the impact of Black Power in Trinidad and Tobago during the 1960s and 1970s. Black Power appealed to a wide cross-section of the public, including academics, trade unionists, and the underprivileged. There is emphasis on the global and regional linkages, including the Sir George Williams Affair in Canada and the Black Power Movement in the United States. Furthermore, Black Power participants in Trinidad and Tobago maintained contacts with their counterparts in other Caribbean countries. The article also provides evidence that the Black Power Movement highlighted the economic problems, racism, and social crisis facing Trinidad and Tobago. This included removal of restrictions from certain jobs and reduction of the racial tension between Afro-Trinidadians and Indo-Trinidadians. Mention is made of individuals and groups who provided leadership, guidance, and ideological input within the movement. Origins of Black Power Black Power in Trinidad and Tobago, during the 1960s and 1970s, was strongly influenced by the ideology of Pan-Africanism, which emerged during the nineteenth century and continued into the early twentieth century when Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican based in the United Black Diaspora Review 4(1) Winter 2014 158 States, promoted race consciousness during the 1920s and 1930s.1 Race consciousness, African identity, and pride were important components of Pan-Africanism and Garveyism, which comprised the foundation of Black Power. The emergence of Black Power during the 1960s signified a struggle to reclaim authority, power, identity, and respect. Black Power in the United States was a response to many years of racism faced by African Americans and that turbulent era was marked by discontent with the “establishment” and rejection of conventional politics.

    THE THEATER OF POLITICS: CONTRASTING TYPES OF PERFORMANCE IN MELANESIA Dorothy K. Billings Wichita State University In this article I interpret phenomena that have traditionally been con- sidered “religious” in anthropological literature as contrasting types of performance. Specifically, I contrast the malanggan of the Tikana peo- ple of northern New Ireland with the “Johnson cult” of the Lavongai people of New Hanover.1 Malanggan have commonly been seen as reli- gious ceremonies, which honor the dead but which also function to inte- grate and sustain society; while the activities of the Lavongai following their vote in 1964 for the American president, Lyndon B. Johnson, called “the Johnson cult” by local authorities, belongs to a category commonly called, by an earlier generation of anthropologists, “cargo cults.” Here I examine the malanggan ceremony and the Johnson cult as performances that express the aspirations and values of individual Tikana and Lavongai in ways that reflect the respective structures of their societies and styles of their cultures. The Tikana people of northern New Ireland continue to perform their traditional malanggan ceremonies to “finish” the dead: socially, politically, economically, psychologically, and, perhaps, spiritually. These ceremonies have been known for over a century, and there is no reason to suppose that they are not much older. Like religious plays of the Middle Ages, these regularly repeated performances tell of the ancient verities as they tell of contemporary manifestations of them; and, in the telling, recreate and reinforce them. The traditional roles are played by the living as they were once played by the dead, following a script known to the ancestors.

On February 26th 1970, when the NJAC stormed the Roman Catholic Church following a protest outside a Canadian bank, they were a small organisation in confl ict with the state. It is the sharpness of the confl ict centred around support for black students in Canada, which drew thousands into a social movement and hundreds to the membership of NJAC. Th e then Geddes Granger had to contemplate a new situation. No longer NJAC ’ s particular confrontation with authority but the wider confl ict which had beset the social order. Political possibilities soar in times such as these. (UC DHP Box 9/3) Having been eff ectively run out of town by the police, Howe needed to relocate, and quickly, if he was to avoid a criminal libel charge. Th e move needed to be thought-through. Black Dimension had ended prematurely, but Howe had no intention of curtailing his political activism. His thoughts turned to the Caribbean.

Focusing on the National Joint Action Committee and the New Beginning Movement, it examines their critiques of the Westminster model of governance, and the alternatives they offered. It considers whether these critiques gave rise to any political reforms in Trinidad, and asks whether the apparent failure of the Black Power movement to bring about radical political change testifies to the legitimacy and robustness of the Westminster model in the Trinidadian context.
