This has included notions about the past, territory, language, and popular culture, among others. Many such studies hypothesize the role of media and publishing in establishing the modern nation-state as a sort of "imagined community" or a "creolized culture." This study, which looks at a local people called the Vaturanga, who live in northwestern Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, approaches the subject from the point of view of economic and communicative behaviours. It is my contention that the dynamic events and features frequently seen in modern and especially post-colonial nation-states can best be explained by reference to a constellation of relationships or associations: the divergent social networks to which people have access. The Vaturanga and their neighbours in rural Guadalcanal and their distant kin in town, illustrate these divergent social networks in such matters as economic change, ethnic relations, language and communication, and the mass media. Economic behaviours must be maintained by communication. This includes both the avenues of communication, and the meanings and symbols employed. This study especially focuses on the latter as a means to understand and comprehend the lives of the Vaturanga.     Christ Episcopal Church Adult Formation 2020 Summer Foundations Course 2020 Guidance from Christians in the midst of Pandemic July 6, 2020 The poet who launched a reform On Sunday, July 14, 1833, the Rev. John Keble (image below), Anglican priest and Professor of Poetry at Oxford University, preached a sermon that accused Parliament of interfering in the internal life of the Church of Ireland (the Anglican Church in Ireland) by reducing its dioceses from 22 to 12 with no consultation of church leaders. Keble’s sermon ignited a storm of controversy for he claimed that the life of the church was not to be determined by the ignorance of public opinion or the whims of Parliament but rather by the gospel of Jesus Christ and the teaching and practices of early Christians – what he called “the apostolic faith.” For English Anglicans who viewed the church as one more agency of the Crown and its government, Keble’s sermon – widely published the moment it ended – gained him violent criticism from many and robust affirmation from others. It was his sermon that led to the emergence of the Oxford Movement – a reform movement in Anglican faith and life. This movement sought to recover “the apostolic faith” by restoring the teaching and practices of early and medieval English Christianity. They viewed the 16th c. reformation as but one moment of reform in the long history of Anglican spirituality: not a tragic break. They criticized the Rationalism that had left Christian faith and life bereft of the mystery of God and God’s presence in the creation and the sacramental life of Christians.

    THE THEATER OF POLITICS: CONTRASTING TYPES OF PERFORMANCE IN MELANESIA Dorothy K. Billings Wichita State University In this article I interpret phenomena that have traditionally been con- sidered “religious” in anthropological literature as contrasting types of performance. Specifically, I contrast the malanggan of the Tikana peo- ple of northern New Ireland with the “Johnson cult” of the Lavongai people of New Hanover.1 Malanggan have commonly been seen as reli- gious ceremonies, which honor the dead but which also function to inte- grate and sustain society; while the activities of the Lavongai following their vote in 1964 for the American president, Lyndon B. Johnson, called “the Johnson cult” by local authorities, belongs to a category commonly called, by an earlier generation of anthropologists, “cargo cults.” Here I examine the malanggan ceremony and the Johnson cult as performances that express the aspirations and values of individual Tikana and Lavongai in ways that reflect the respective structures of their societies and styles of their cultures. The Tikana people of northern New Ireland continue to perform their traditional malanggan ceremonies to “finish” the dead: socially, politically, economically, psychologically, and, perhaps, spiritually. These ceremonies have been known for over a century, and there is no reason to suppose that they are not much older. Like religious plays of the Middle Ages, these regularly repeated performances tell of the ancient verities as they tell of contemporary manifestations of them; and, in the telling, recreate and reinforce them. The traditional roles are played by the living as they were once played by the dead, following a script known to the ancestors.
