In chapter one I examine the first part of Godard’s film career (1952-1967) the Nouvelle Vague years. Influenced by the events of May 1968, Godard at the end of this period renounced his films as bourgeois only to announce a new method of making films that would reflect the au courant French Maoist politics. In chapter two I discuss Godard and the Dziga Vertov Group’s last film Tout va bien. This film displays a marked difference in style from Godard’s earlier films, yet does not display a clear understanding of how to make a political film of this measure without alienating the audience. In contrast to this film, I contrast Guy Debord’s (1931-1994) contemporaneous film The Society of the Spectacle (1973). As a filmmaker Debord successfully dealt with alienation in film.

His seminars on critical theory and cultural studies have not only broadened my scope of knowledge but also sharpened my vision and skills for conducting cross-cultural research through the conceptual lens. My initial interest in the topic of this dissertation started with taking a course with him on cultural studies, for which I wrote an essay about Antonioni’s Chung Kuo. For the past three years, his guidance has been a constant source of inspiration and encouragement, without which the completion of this project would not have been possible. I also want to thank my committee members for their intellectual assistance to my dissertation. Dr. Shilyh Warren ushered me into the realm of documentary studies and opened my eyes to the political signification of cinema in the sphere of aesthetics.

  • A Systematic Approach to Audience Response to Film
DOCUMENT RESUME ED 111 041 CS 501 110 AUTHOR Kleinhans, Charles; Lesage, Julia TITLE A Systematic Approach to Audience Response to Film. PUB DATE Mar 73 NOTE 35p.; Study done at Indiana University; Not available in hard copy due to marginal legibility of original document EDRS PRICE MF-$0.76 Plus Postage. HC Not Available from EDRS. DESCRIPTORS Aesthetic Education; *Art Appreciation; *Audiences; *Communication (Thought Transfer); *Films; Film Study; *Visual Literacy ABSTRACT This paper is divided into three parts, the first discussing the necessary conditions foran adequate response to Godard and Gorin's film "Vent d'Est." It is suggestedthat the film demands both cinematic and political sophisticationon the part of the viewer and that the audience must accept the flatness, the "deconstruction" of the cinematic image, and be guided by thesound track. Part 2, "A Paradigm: 'The Ecology of Film,'"presents a global paradigm which takes into consideration the whole filmprocess from inception to reception, regardless of the historicalperiod the film is received in. The film asa system is divided into six distinct aspects or subsystems of the film process, and the relationships between these subsystems is elaboratedon. The third part, "Categories of Audience Response in Film Viewing,"offers a second paradigm in which film response is broken down intothe following types: simple, compound, complex self-reflective, andcomplex self-critical. Each of these types ofresponses is further subdivided into emotional, intellectual, anda combination of both. It is asserted that there is no such thingas a "pure aesthetic" response.
