The Study of Onomatopoeia Types and Translation Strategies in Don Rosa’s The Lifes and Times of Scrooge Mcduck. Yogyakarta: Department of English Letters, Faculty of Letters, Sanata Dharma University, 2013. Comic is a kind of reading that has so many connoisseurs in all of the world. The story of the comic is seen through the conversation inside the balloons. Comic contains pictures and many expressions such as onomatopoeia. This undergraduate thesis discusses the onomatopoeia in The Life and Times of Scrooge Mcduck by Don Rosa. The target language is comic Kisah Hidup Paman Gober. For the purpose of the study, the following problems were formulated. The first problem was what types of onomatopoeia that could be found in the comic The Life and Times of Scrooge Mcduck and its translation. Second problem was about the strategies used in translating the onomatopoeia that had been found. This study was a qualitative and library research. Analysis data of this research used all the population. This comic has 7 series. The writer used all of the series. Based on the research analysis, following were the answer to each problem. There were 63 onomatopoeic expressions that could be found in the comic. From the data, there were 40 expressions that belong to direct onomatopoeia, 16 data belong to associative onomatopoeia, and 7 expressions belong to exemplary onomatopoeia. In analyzing the data of onomatopoeia, it could be concluded that some of expressions could not be found in the dictionaries, and some could. Other finding was that some of the phonetic transcriptions were predicted in reason that they could not be found in the dictionaries. The result for the second problem was communicative translation applied in translating the onomatopoeia words. This type of translation was supported by oblique translation techniques, its name was equivalence. There were three strategies applied. Yogyakarta: Jurusan Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Sastra, Universitas Sanata Dharma, 2013 Komik merupakan salah satu bacaan yang memiliki banyak penggemar di seluruh dunia. Kisah di dalam komik dapat dilihat melalui percakapan yang berada di dalam balon. Komik terdiri dari gambar-gambar dan banyak ekspresi seperti onomatopea. Studi sarjana ini membahas tentang onomatopea yang ada di dalam komik The Life and Times of Scrooge Mcduck karya Don Rosa. Bahasa targetnya adalah bahasa dari komik Kisah Hidup Paman Gober. Demi tujuan studi ini, berikut adalah masalah yang disusun. Masalah yang pertama adalah apa saja onomatopea yang dapat ditemukan dalam komik the Life and Times of Scrooge Mcduck dan terjemahannya dalam Kisah Hidup Paman Gober. Permasalahan yang kedua adalah strategi apa yang dipakai dalam menerjemahkan onomatopea yang telah ditemukan. Penulis menggunakan penelitian kualitatif dan kepustakaan. Penelitian ini menggunakan keseluruhan populasi dari data. Bacaan komik ini memiliki 7 seri. Peneliti menggunakan semua seri komik tersebut. Berdasarkan analisis penelitian, berikut adalah jawaban pada setiap masalah. Terdapat 63 ekspresi onomatopea yang didapat dalam komik. Dari data tersebut, 40 ekspresi merupakan jenis direct onomatopoeia, 16 data termasuk dalam associative onomatopoeia, dan sisanya merupakan exemplary onomatopoeia. Dalam menganalisis data onomatopea, dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat beberapa ekspresi yang tidak dapat ditemukan di dalam kamus, dan beberapa dapat ditemukan. Penemuan berikutnya adalah bahwa beberapa transkripsi fonetik dari ekspresi onomatopea diprediksi oleh penulis karena tidak dapat ditemukan di dalam kamus. Hasil dari permasalahan yang kedua adalah bahwa terjemahan komunikatif diterapkan dalam menerjemahkan kata-kata onomatopea. Tipe terjemahan ini didukung dengan teknik terjemahan oblique, namanya adalah equivalence atau persamaan. Terdapat tiga strategi yang dipakai. Shinohara and Kawahara (2010) proposed that features of vowels (frontness, height) and obstruents (voicing) cause listeners to perceive words as either larger or smaller. Study 1 firstly replicates the original experiment then repeats the experiment using a speech perception paradigm. The speech perception experiment assesses whether listeners perceive sizes differently between spoken language and visual reading. The results from Study 1 were consistent with Shinohara and Kawahara (2010) except that words with /u/ were perceived as smaller in our results. We hypothesized that this result may be due to u-fronting which is an iconic feature of Californian English so we repeated both the written word and speech perception experiments in Study 2 with non-Californian English speakers. Our results support Shinohara and Kawahara’s claims and suggest that speakers perceive dialect-specific phonetic properties from written word. 1. Introduction 1.1 Traditional perspective on form and meaning One long-held assumption in linguistics is that the physical form of a linguistic signal is independent of its meaning. This idea is attributed to Ferdinand de Saussure who stated in his Course in General Linguistics that “the bond between the signifier and the signified is arbitrary” (De Saussure & Baskin, 2011). Saussure argues that the idea conveyed by a word is not linked to the ordered set of sounds that make up the word.

THE PHONOLOGY AND MORPHOLOGY OF KISI George Tucker Childs ABSTRACT This dissertation describes the phonology and morphology of the Kisi language, a member of the Southern Branch of (West) Atlantic. The language is spoken in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. After the introduction in Chapter 1 and an overview of the language in Chapter 2, I discuss the phonology of the language. The phonemic inventory has implosives, a full series of nasal compound stops, and a set of labialvelars. The vowels form a symmetrical seven- vowel pattern, and length is contrastive. Syllable structure is , C(G)V(V)(C), where the only consonants allowed to close syllables are the liquid and two nasals. Kisi is a tonal language with the following tones: Low, High, Extra-High (limited distribution), Rise, and Fall.

Recent research suggests a more textured view of vocabulary structure, in which arbitrariness is complemented by iconicity (aspects of form resemble aspects of meaning) and systematicity (statistical regularities in forms predict function). Experimental evidence suggests these form to meaning correspondences serve different functions in language processing, development and communication: systematicity facilities category learning by means of phonological cues, iconicity facilitates word learning and communication by means of perceptuomotor analogies, and arbitrariness facilitates meaning individuation through distinctive forms. Processes of cultural evolution help explain how these competing motivations shape vocabulary structure. The return of non-arbitrariness An upheaval is underway in current thinking about the arbitrary nature of linguistic signs. The long- standing view that the form of a word has an essentially arbitrary relation to the word’s meaning [1,2] is giving way to a perspective that recognises roles for both arbitrariness and non-arbitrariness in language.

HANSON A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF ARTS IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS EDMONTON ALBERT June, 2019 UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA FACULTY OF ARTS 2 Abstract We designed an exploratory pilot study to examine the nature of onomatopoeia use in Canadian mother’s speech to infants (12-18 months old) on the brink of a period of rapid productive vocabulary development with prevalent individual variation in vocabulary size (Fenson et al, 1994). The study ​ ​ included the use of a novel design for eliciting onomatopoeia in semi-spontaneous child directed speech (CDS). The study aims to build on previous findings regarding the nature of onomatopoeia in British mothers’ CDS to 8 month old infants (Laing et al, 2017). We aimed to create a method of eliciting onomatopoeia and associated conventional words in CDS, in order to analyze prosodic features including pitch, pitch range, and duration. We additionally aimed to analyze the nature of onomatopoeia use in semi-spontaneous CDS discourse, including analyzing the proportion of target words produced in isolation, proximity of onomatopoeic words to associated conventional words, target word utterance position, reduplication and repetition, and frequency of target word use. Finally, we aimed to explore the possible role of onomatopoeia in word learning by analyzing maternal onomatopoeia use compared to infant vocabulary size. The results from the data revealed a number of differences between onomatopoeia and conventional word use in CDS. We discuss future research directions based on the findings from the current pilot study.

They are found in many of the world’s languages, and sizable lexical classes of ideophones are particularly well-documented in languages of Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Ideophones are not limited to onomatopoeia like meow and smack, but cover a wide range of sensory domains, such as manner of motion (e.g., plisti plasta ‘splish-splash’ in Basque), texture (e.g., tsaklii ‘rough’ in Ewe), and psychological states (e.g., wakuwaku ‘excited’ in Japanese). Across languages, ideophones stand out as marked words due to special phonotactics, expressive morphology including certain types of reduplication, and relative syntactic independence, in addition to production features like prosodic foregrounding and common co-occurrence with iconic gestures. Three intertwined issues have been repeatedly debated in the century-long literature on ideophones. (a) Definition: Isolated descriptive traditions and cross-linguistic variation have sometimes obscured a typologically unified view of ideophones, but recent advances show the promise of a prototype definition of ideophones as conventionalised depictions in speech, with room for language-specific nuances. (b) Integration: The variable integration of ideophones across linguistic levels reveals an interaction between expressiveness and grammatical integration, and has important implications for how to conceive of dependencies between linguistic systems. (c) Iconicity: Ideophones form a natural laboratory for the study of iconic form-meaning associations in natural languages, and converging evidence from corpus and experimental studies suggests important developmental, evolutionary, and communicative advantages of ideophones.
