The Gulf of La Spezia has always been considered a natural port because of its natural morphology. The Gulf is sheltered from northern winds (north/west mountains) and southern winds (islands of Tino and Tinetto): also for these reasons its location and services are available all year round. In the second half of the nineteenth century it became the seat of the Military Navy, and a large Military Shipyard was built at that time. The construction of the shipyard changed the aspect of the city. Newer and larger urban areas were reserved for the population thus making life a bit easier. Nowadays the port of La Spezia is one of the major Italian military and commercial harbours. An excellent network of roads and railways connect it to the main monumental, artistic and natural attractions of Tuscany, Liguria, and to Parma and Ferrari areas. Being the best starting point for boat and bus excursions to the Five Lands and the Gulf of Poets. LAT : 44° 07’ N LON : 9° 50’ E 3 La Spezia is in the center of the Ligurian Gulf of Poets (from Lerici to Portovenere), it is the best starting point to the beautiful area of “Five Lands”, and it is not far from Portofino and S. Margherita Ligure. The distances to the main tourist centers of Tuscany are similar to those from Leghorn. Distance (km) from La Spezia to: Five Lands <30 Portofino 90 Genoa 110 Lucca 80 Pisa 80 Florence 140 Parma 120 Milan 220 Bologna 220 Venice 367 Roads and motorways La Spezia is the “crossing point” of 2 important routes: -- the Genoa-Rome route, by road with s/s Aurelia, by motorway, with A12 -- the Parma – La Spezia route, by road s/s della Cisa, by motorway, with A15 Motorways entrance is approx. 5 km from the Port. Railways Also the railways station of La Spezia serves 2 routes: Genoa-Rome and Parma-La Spezia. It is 4 km from the Port Airports At 80 km: the international airport “Galileo Galilei” of Pisa ; at 125 km: the international airport “Cristoforo Colombo” of Genoa ; at 12 km: the third level class airport of Luni. 4 The Port of La Spezia For cruise ships: technical info and services For cruise ships, the port of La Spezia arranges 3 anchoring positions , at 4-6 minutes by tender from the La Spezia Cruise Facility (LSCF ) land cruise terminal , a large and comfortable floating pier located in front of the city Public Gardens. The anchoring of cruise ships is a positive economic aspect, as it greatly minimize port costs. 5 Embarkation/disembarkation operations are carried out through a floating platform; starting last June 2008, a second floating platform, JF type, 20 x 5.6 mts, has been working for mega-ships. Ship tenders arrive at the floating pier / cruise terminal in 4-6 minutes. The excursions Buses wait passengers in a specific dedicated area, at 50 mt from the floating pier. Entertainment and services for passengers and crew are close to the port, within walking distance: shops, museums, restaurants, bars, pizzerias, pubs 6 Tourist areas from La Spezia “Something Classic, Something Special” From La Spezia, cruise passengers can easily reach and visit the classic , worldwide known tourist sites , as : classic Florence * Pisa * Lucca * Portofino and S. It preserves an excellent artistic witnessing of centuries of civilization, admirable in its churches, museums, monuments. What to see: Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio, il Ponte Vecchio, the Michelangelo’s David, the Loggia della Signoria, the Carhedral, with Baptistery and Giotto’s Bell Tower, Santa Maria Novella Church, the Uffizi’s Museum, Santa Croce Church, the Medicean Chapels ... and many other beautiful places. 8 Something classic Pisa (at approx. 80 km , 1 hr by bus) ~ 90,000 inhabitants Situated on the banks and by the outlet of the river Arno, it had been one important Republic of the Sea and spreaded its power out to Corsica isle. Its decadence has been determined by both the rivalry with Lucca d Florence, and, most of all, by the clash with Genoa, the rival Republic of rhe Sea. Its artistic estate is mostly in Miracles' Square where you can admire the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Camposanto, and especially the bell tower, known all over the world as the Leaning Tower. Another important monument is the Church of St. Maria della Spina, recently restored, on the Arno's riverside. Something classic Lucca (at approx. 80 km , 1 hr by bus) ~ 80,000 inhabitants Lucca was founded by the Etruscans and became a Roman colony. Its historical center preserves the Roman street plan and many traces of Roman sites. Lucca was important also during the Middle Age, the Italian Renaissance and in Bonaparte’s period. What to see: the walls, fully intact todays, now a pedestrian promenade which encircled the old town; the St Martin's Cathedral ; Piazza dell'Anfiteatro ; Piazza Napoleone ; Piazza San Michele ; the Ducal Palace ; the ancient Roman amphitheatre; the church of San Michele in Foro; the Basilica of San Frediano Something classic Portofino and S. Margherita L. (at approx 90 km , 1 hr by bus) Portofin o: ~ 550 inhabitants Portofino , a small village on the Ligurian Riviera, was founded by the Romans and named Portus Delphini , or Port of the Dolphin , because of the large number of dolphins that inhabited the Tigullian Gulf. Nowadays it is a picturesque, small (ex fishing people) village and tourist resort, with restaurant, bars and shops, considered anyway one of the most beautiful Mediterranean ports. To visit: the village, the Castello Brown, the San Martino Church. Santa Margherita Ligure: ~ 10,500 inhabitants Very close to Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure is a town surrounded by hills covered in lush Mediterranean vegetation: a paradisiacal setting for villas and gardens , all with spectacular views on to the coast Typical products and luxury brands are offered by the local shops, and the port welcomes luxury yachts as well as local traditional fishing vessels. The port is also the site for sporting activities, such as sailing and canoeing, as well as numerous fashionable social events linked to the international sailing regattas. Something classic Genoa (at approx. 110 km , 1,5 hrs by bus) ~ 800,000 inhabitants (incl. suburbs) Genoa is a city with an old history, focused on its central position in the North Tyrrenic sea. Nowaday part of the old city is inscribed on the World Heritage List (UNESCO). What to see: San Lorenzo Cathedral, Via Garibaldi, Piazza de Ferrari, Porta Soprana and the Colombo’s House, the Rolli Buildings (Palazzi dei Rolli), S. Matteo Church, the Porto Antico area with the Bigo (Renzo Piano architectures), the hystorical center (the largest in Europe) LIGURIA GASTRONOMY The cuisine in Liguria is 100% Mediterranean, bursting with fresh flavours, healthy seafood, extra virgin olive oils and most famously, Pesto. Pesto sauce (typical from Genoa) is made with basil, pine nuts, Pecorino cheese, garlic and copious amounts of good olive oil. It usually accompanies trenette pasta or gnocchi. Another tipycal sauce is the nuts sauce, for accompanying the “pansotti”, similar, but different, to raviolis. Liguria is also well known for Focaccia, a flat bread with oils and salt, and Farinata, a thin mixture of chick- pea flour, olive oil and water cooked in large pots in wood-burning ovens. Local wines from east side of Liguria are mainly white, as “Vermentino”, or “Pigato”, or, from Five Lands area, the rare “Sciacchetrà” Something special La Spezia and the Gulf of Poets From the Cruise Terminal floating pier: La Spezia downtown: 5 min by walking Portovenere: at 13 km by bus, 20 min by boat Lerici: at 12 km by bus, 20 min by boat The Gulf of La Spezia is one of the most wide and deep inlets of the whole Tyrrhenian coast.
