The Gulf of La Spezia has always been considered a natural port because of its natural morphology. The Gulf is sheltered from northern winds (north/west mountains) and southern winds (islands of Tino and Tinetto): also for these reasons its location and services are available all year round. In the second half of the nineteenth century it became the seat of the Military Navy, and a large Military Shipyard was built at that time. The construction of the shipyard changed the aspect of the city. Newer and larger urban areas were reserved for the population thus making life a bit easier. Nowadays the port of La Spezia is one of the major Italian military and commercial harbours. An excellent network of roads and railways connect it to the main monumental, artistic and natural attractions of Tuscany, Liguria, and to Parma and Ferrari areas.
