Niall Whitehead reviews… the TV show, that is Tuesday 18 November 2014 Rating: ★★★★☆ Another week, another episode of Gotham, Channel 5’s newest Batmanless Batman show! Thus far, it’s been so OK it’s not bad – it’s still managed to remain worth watching, though. This week, there’s a new drug hitting the streets: Viper, seemingly a prototype of the infamous Venom drug that gives Bane his super-strength in the comics. Users get that same power, lugging cash machines over their shoulders and throwing people through doors, but quickly suffer a fatal case of withdrawal when the effects wear off. It’s up to Gordon and Bullock to cut off the flow, and find out who’s out there supplying it… All that means that Gotham takes another step forward this episode from noirish corruption to comic- book super-villainy. Our villain of the week – another disgruntled citizen worn down by the system, much like the Balloonman – pioneers the proud Gotham traditions of hijacking television channels and gassing the audience. The emergence of Viper gives us our first look at actual superpowers, too – complete with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D-esque dodgy CGI, so it’s nice to know they have something in common. In fact, that whole main plot felt like a strong episode of S.H.I.E.L.D, giving the show a more distinct identity than your typical police procedural with “BATMAN” slapped on it. Meanwhile, the show’s usual subplots tick along unimpeded, pretty much entirely disconnected from Gordon and Bullock and their case of the week. The Penguin makes his first big mistake this week, revealing to his mobster employer who he actually is – an exiled snitch on the run from his last gang – and almost getting introduced face-first to a meat grinder for his trouble. Only Gordon’s intervention saves him, in what’s actually a quite tense scene (kudos to David Zayas’ Salvadore Maroni for bringing a suitable air of menace to proceedings), and that intervention places him squarely under Maroni’s thumb. Barbara and Detective Montoya are absent this week – not that they’re particularly missed – so Fish Mooney provides the female-led subplot. Last week she picked up a protégée, and this week we see what she’s going to do with her – use her as a honeytrap against her alleged boss, Falcone (called it, by the http://nouse.co.uk/2014/11/18/tv-review-gotham-series-1-episode-5-viper Archived 11 Dec 2018 08:54:04 Nouse Web Archives TV Review: Gotham Series 1 Episode 5: ‘Viper’ Page 2 of 3 way). A new sub-plot also emerges from the mire this week. After hints that Thomas and Martha Wayne weren’t quite as above Gotham’s infamous layers of corruption as young Bruce imagined – which would have been interesting to examine over a few episodes rather than killing them off in the opening scene, but c’est la vie – it seems there’s some dodgy dealings in the belly of Wayne Enterprises. It’ll be interesting to see where that one goes, especially with Alfred joining Bruce on his quest to find his parents’ killer. Bruce still seems a lot like a fully-developed Batman trapped in the body of a child – swearing revenge on his parents’ killer and so on – but if he’s going to keep turning up every week, he at least has something to do now. All in all, that was a strong episode (there’s probably a pun about Viper in there somewhere but I’m too lazy to find it). And there was a scene where an elderly Philosophy professor jacked up on Viper threw Bullock through a door. So we’ll always have that. Most Read Discussed 1. • Looking at the 'Dark Side' of Creativity
14 December 2011 | voaspecialenglish.com Looking at the 'Dark Side' of Creativity AP An English examination at Dongguan Technology Institute in Guangdong province, China, in 2007. Students were given different test versions in an effort to prevent cheating. (Download an MP3 of this story at voaspecialenglish.com) This is the VOA Special English Health Report. Not all cheaters are creative. But apparently enough creative people cheat to interest researchers like Francesca Gino. Professor Gino is a behavioral economist at the Harvard Business School in Massachusetts. Behavioral economists use ideas from psychology to study how people make economic choices. FRANCESCA GINO: "Interestingly, there are actually a lot of examples in the literature, novels, movies, comic books about this idea of the evil genius, but really no empirical evidence for this relationship." BATMAN (ADAM WEST): "He's terrorized Gotham City, he's baffled the police department and he's held us up to public ridicule." Fans of old TV shows might recognize Batman and Robin, struggling to catch one of those evil geniuses -- the Joker. 2 BATMAN: "Gloating on his own success, he may be planning some super crime and stumble on his own pride." ROBIN (BURT WARD): "And how do we go about stopping him?" BATMAN: "Just go about our normal routine and let the venomous viper trap himself." ROBIN: "And when he does." BATMAN: "Snap!" ROBIN: "Caught in a bat trap!" BATMAN: "Right." Professor Gino was less interested in catching cheaters than understanding them. She tested volunteers to see how creative they were. Then she tested them in situations involving small amounts of money, where they could earn extra by cheating.

Politics Business Science Sport Roses Freshers Muse › Film & TV › Features Film Reviews TV Reviews Festivals TV Review: Gotham Series 1 Episode 10: ‘Lovecraft’ Wayne Manor’s under attack in Gotham’s mid-season finale. Niall Whitehead reviews Monday 22 December 2014 Rating: ★★★☆☆ Well, folks, for Gotham’s first half of the season, this is the end of the road! Or, perhaps more appropriately, the end of the seedy-looking alley on the way back from the opera house. It’s been good! It’s been bad! Mostly bad! But the series has shown potential, at least enough of it to merit the existence of the rest of the season. But what about ‘Lovecraft’ itself? The episode begins with Wayne Manor set upon by a gang of ruthless and mysterious assassins (judging by their skills and their focus on only murdering the “deserving”, I’m holding on to my League of Shadows theory), forcing Little Bruce to run for the hills. But it’s not him they’re after – it’s Selina Kyle, the only witness to the murder of his parents, and the corrupt businessman, Lovecraft, that Gordon’s currently trying to bring down… It’s Bruce and Selina’s plot that stands out most, out of all the threads that get tied up this episode. And that’s a sentence I didn’t think I’d end up typing. Most of the stuff given to Bruce this season’s felt somewhat forced, and an episode mostly reliant on two child actors never bodes particularly well, but the two of them carried it off well enough.

Bessler* I am certainly not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and constitutions. But laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors.
