Time Patem želi nadprostoriti i provjeriti ideju o subjektivnom doživljaju ove vrste umjetničkog iskustva. Patemci, licem u lice s kolegama, a iznad tumačenja kolektivnog sjećanja povijesti i povijesti umjetnosti, izrečenog i prepričanog, u kontekstu čitanja / prepročitavanja povijesnih činjenica, pokreću participativni rad Radijus krivine - Patem karavan. Sve to viđeno kroz intertekstualnost, intermedialnost i interdisciplinarnost korištenih dokumenata ostvarene komunikacije, u obliku teksta, fotografija, video – audio zapisa i drugih vrsta unaprijed (ne) planiranih oblicima kreativnog pribeležavanja sadržaja, iskustava, slučaja i događaja iz specifičnih situacija u umjetnosti sa ovog regiona. U dogovorenim karavan susretima s planiranim autorima Patemci iniciraju zajedničko višesatno druženje i razmjenu iskustava, ne narušavajući njihov svakodnevni život, onoliko koliko im vrijeme dozvoljava, u ime umjetnosti. By contrast, music which is popular but perceived as “bad” has generated surprisingly little interest. This dissertation looks at Polish post-socialist music through the lenses of musical phenomena that came to prominence after socialism collapsed but which are perceived as controversial, undesired, shameful, and even dangerous. They run the gamut from the perceived nadir of popular music to some works of the most renowned contemporary classical composers that are associated with the suffix -polo, an expression

It begins with a discussion of the suppression of patriotic music in the early decades of socialist Yugoslavia, when the regime attempted to create a supranational culture that would unify Yugoslavia’s constituent nations. It then analyses the national cultural revival in Croatia in the late 1960s that prompted a political movement known as the Croatian Spring, when the pop singer Vice Vukov incorporated Croatian patriotic themes into his songs. In the years following the crushing of the Croatian Spring in 1971, Croatian nationalism was again suppressed in politics and music, and because of this stifling of political opposition Croatia was dubbed “the silent republic.” For the rest of the 1970s the political function of pop and rock music was reflected in its glorification of Yugoslavia and its leader, Josip Broz Tito.

  • Some Thoughts on Europe, Balkan Cinema and Identity
Of Boundaries and Revolving Doors: Some Thoughts on Europe, Balkan Cinema and Identity KAREN VIRAG Recently, I was given a copy of University of Leicester professor Dina Iordanova’s impressive new book on Balkan cinema, Cinema of Flames: Balkan Film, Culture and the Media. Among the many issues addressed in this excellent and far-ranging work are cross-cultural representations of the Balkans; the relationship of the Balkans to the European cultural sphere; the siege of Sarajevo, perhaps the most emblematic conflict of the recent wars; the (im)possibility of taking sides in armed conflict; images of women and minorities; and how all these things affect and are affected by Balkan film. The power of Cinema of Flames can be measured in its manifold effects: first, I began a near orgy of Balkan film watching. I had seen some of the films before but was prompted to re-evaluate them in light of a broader cultural and historical awareness. Further, I was inspired to rethink previous assumptions about the meaning of boundaries, belonging and the notion of the state; in other words, to discover what all is in a name. And I was reminded that east and west are not just points on a compass. GO EAST, YOUNG WOMAN, GO EAST Some time back in the 1980s, when I told a friend that I was going to Hungary for the summer, she asked with great puzzlement, “Why would you go there?” Her reaction struck me as odd, a trip to Europe in the summer, a pilgrimage to the continent that gave us Michelangelo and Bach being a normal rite of passage for many Canadian university students.
