Along its lifetime, our network has managed to involve all different levels of political and cultural organizations: from associations to city administrations, from national governments to cultural institutions, from young artists to the world of art critics, from the media to ju- venile movements. In these years BJCEM has highlighted the new creativity, has developed a widespread network of public and private bodies on international level, has carried out— thanks to the collaboration of all the members and the extensive involvement of eleven big cities—a program of biennial events and artistic exchanges of great dimensions. The Biennial has succeeded in joining together contemporary artistic research with social engagement, integrating its events with moments of political and cultural reflection through- out the Mediterranean countries. In times of complicated international situations, it has man- aged to keep alive a constant dialogue of peace and collaboration in one of the most intri- cate areas of the world which is incessantly traversed by violent conflicts. Personally, I know the Biennial very well; I was the director of the 1997 edition in Turin and I have participated, with many other cultural operators, in the creation of this project since 1984. Therefore I have had the occasion to live intensely and follow the evolution of the project in all its different aspects and its complex phases. At the beginning we were just few partners joining this adventure, but already in the original design the strength, the in- novation and the energy of the Biennial were evident. These were the characteristics that Original is a document about the history of the last twenty years of the Biennial of Young A Successful Idea Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean, in the period between the last decades of the The Biennial is an event that has a place

Education Kit Years 7-12 The Writing’s on the Wall - A Short History of Street Art The word graffiti comes from the Italian language and means to inscribe. In European art graffiti dates back at least 17,000 years to wall paintings such as are found in the caves of Lascaux in Southern France. The paintings at Lascaux depict animals from the Paleolithic period that were of cultural importance to the people of that region. They are also believed to be spiritual in nature relating to visions experienced during ritualistic trance-dancing. Australian indigenous rock art dates back even further to about 65,000 years and like the paintings at Lascaux, Australian indigenous rock art is spiritual in nature and relates to ceremonies and the Dreaming. The history of contemporary graffiti/street art dates back about 40 years to the 1960s but it also depicts images of cultural importance to people of a particular region, the inner city, and their rituals and lifestyles. The 1960s were a time of enormous social unrest with authority challenged at every opportunity. It is no wonder graffiti, with its strong social and political agendas, hit the streets, walls, pavements, overpasses and subways of the world with such passion. The city of New York in the 1970s was awash with graffiti. It seemed to cover every surface. When travelling the subway it was often impossible to see out of the carriage for the graffiti. • The “Work” of Simeon Ten Holt's Canto Ostinato Through the Van Veen
The “Work” of Simeon ten Holt’s Canto Ostinato through the Van Veen Recordings Stacey Low ORCID: 0000-0003-4287-9044 Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music (Musicology/Ethnomusicology) September 2020 Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Faculty of Fine Arts and Music University of Melbourne Abstract Canto Ostinato for keyboard instruments (1973-79) is the best-known piece of Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt (1923-2012). The first work of his final compositional period, it advocates indeterminacy in performance, leaving performers to decide on dynamics, articulation, pedalling, instrumentation, and the number of repetitions of most of its 106 sections. Canto Ostinato’s aleatoric nature is investigated in relation to the traditional connotations of a “work,” as highlighted by Lydia Goehr. Georgina Born’s notion of a “provisional” type of work and Peter Elsdon’s classification of a work as the total of its realisations are posited as alternative definitions. An examination of Canto as a “work” would be incomplete without an analysis of the piece’s relationships to its composer, period of conception, performers, realisations, and audiences, and the relationships and contradictions between these aspects. This thesis investigates Canto in relation to several of its precedents in experimental music, such as improvisational music, minimalism, and indeterminacy. Several of ten Holt’s stated beliefs are investigated in relation to the score of Canto, such as the spiritual importance he accorded to the concept of tonality; the special interaction between the performers; the idea of each work developing on its own; and the notion of an “ideal performance” of an indeterminate piece.
