Formby High School

Determined to Achieve Curriculum and Achievement

‘Students work with pace, purpose and independence on a range of challenging activities.’ (Ofsted, 2012)

Formby High School has an impressive record of success at GCSE and A Level. Each year, the overwhelming majority of of students achieve at least five A* to C grades (including English and Mathematics) at GCSE, significantly exceeding national expectations. Most students join Sixth Form and attain A Level results that enable them to progress to study at some of the country’s most prestigious universities.

In 2015, over 54% of A Levels were graded A*to B which places the school alongside the highest performing in the region. The school puts particular emphasis on the Performing Arts and Science and, through the teaching of these subjects, all students develop creative flair, confidence and enquiring minds that enhance their capacity to learn and enjoy. Students follow a broad curriculum at Key Stage Three and have the opportunity to specialise by choosing from a wide range of GCSE subjects and vocational courses at Key Stage Four. Formby High School is fully inclusive, offering a curriculum that meets the needs of each individual and enabling every student to succeed.

Formby High School ‘Students reach exceptionally high standards and make outstanding progress.’ (Ofsted, 2008) ‘A happy learning community in which all students are helped to develop into exceptionally mature, confident and articulate young people, who achieve outstandingly well.’ (Ofsted, 2008)

Pastoral Care and Student Welfare

The uniqueness of every student at Formby High School is valued and the nurturing of each child’s talents is at the heart of all we do.

The school places particular importance on pastoral care and personal development, and provides every Year Seven student with the security of being placed in a smaller than average tutor group from the outset. Students retain the same form teacher throughout their time at the school and truly benefit from this consistency in terms of care and guidance. Further care is provided by the Climate for Learning Leaders who ‘Students value the excellent support and guidance they are are assigned to each year group and our committed team of given, within and outside lessons, to ensure their success.’ pastoral support staff. (Ofsted, 2012)

Developing leadership is essential and there are ample opportunities for students to take on the challenge of leadership, including election to the School Parliament and Junior Leadership Team. These groups play a vital role in the development of the school by promoting the views of the student body. They also represent the school during key public events, act as ambassadors for the school and are available to any students who wish to seek their support.

Formby High School does not accept second best in terms of standards of behaviour and every student is expected to work hard, respect him or herself and respect others. The calm and responsible manner in which our students behave promotes a positive learning environment for all and is recognised Junior Leadership Team through our comprehensive rewards system that allows students to work towards bronze, silver, gold and platinum rewards badges.

Students leave Formby High School as young adults ‘Students learn to express themselves with maturity and equipped with the skills, qualifications, determination and reflect with great maturity on their feelings and experiences.’ confidence to succeed in life and make a difference to the (Ofsted, 2008) communities they serve. Extra-Curricular Programme and School Trips

Students have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of extra-curricular and curriculum enriching activities. The school has a national reputation for excellence in the Performing Arts and all Year Seven students are able to participate in the Christmas pantomime. The school enjoys excellent drama, dance and music facilities which are always a hive of activity at lunchtime and after school, hosting over 20 different music, dance and drama clubs, including Mundo Afrika, Rock School, Jazz Works and dance master classes for all year groups. Awards and our Mundo Afrika choir winning the ‘traditional and international’ category at the prestigious National Music for Youth.

Taking part in activities outside the classroom is a great way for students to build positive relationships, develop self-esteem and lead an active and healthy lifestyle. The commitment of our students to the extra-curricular programme and the high standards they display demonstrate that the school’s mission ‘determined to achieve’ resonates way beyond their academic work.

Each year, students visit local, national and international places Students have the opportunity to follow the Duke of of interest. The range of school trips offered to students is Edinburgh’s Award Scheme from Year Nine and there is a diverse and includes sports tours, cultural visits, Performing variety of physical activities on offer throughout the week Arts tours and field work. In addition to local and national trips with teams from Formby High School competing against to the theatre and museums, students have recently travelled other schools in a wide range of sports, including football, as far afield as the First World War battlefields of France netball, rugby and cricket. The school has been recognised and Belgium, Krakow in Poland, the USA on a ski trip and a for its outstanding extra-curricular provision, including being Performing Arts tour, the Caribbean for sporting competition awarded Secondary School of the Year at the Sefton Sports and both Spain and France to enhance the learning of foreign languages. Formby High School Sixth Form Formby High School

We have a flourishing Sixth Form at Formby High School with the majority of our Year 11 students returning to us to study A Levels, BTEC qualifications or a combination of these courses. In addition, students join us from many other institutions in the borough and beyond. Indeed, in recent years we have admitted students from as far afield as Holland, Italy and the USA.

The school offers a wide range of courses which are outlined in the table below.

Standards and expectations are high and students achieve excellent results. Consistently, more than half of A Levels are graded at A* to B and over 75% of students achieve Distinction* or Distinction in BTEC courses. Many students go on to study at some of the country’s most prestigious universities. In recent years, a considerable proportion of our leavers have progressed to study at the Russell Group universities and some have successfully gained places at Oxford or Cambridge. For those who choose not to progress to higher education, they leave well equipped to pursue their chosen pathways.

Facilities for the Sixth Form are excellent. Students are based in a purpose-built Sixth Form Centre where they have access to teaching rooms, two multi-media study facilities and a common room that contains the ‘The Ozone’ coffee bar. There is also Wi- Fi connectivity throughout the building.

Pastoral care, which is a priority, is overseen by the Director of Sixth Form and two Progress Leaders, who are each assigned to a year group. All students benefit from the guidance of a Personal Tutor and an Academic Tutor who provide support to assist students in coping with the demands of A Level and BTEC study while preparing well for life after Sixth Form.

All students are expected to work hard to make the best of their ability. In Year 12, students study four AS Level or equivalent subjects and continue with three of these subjects during Year 13. We also aim to help our students achieve more than just academic success and place a great emphasis on producing articulate, well informed and caring individuals through offering, amongst other things, a comprehensive enrichment programme. The range of enrichment activities has broadened in recent years to give students the opportunity to produce and manage our online fanzine, learn to cook, keep fit through sports and dance, and lead performing arts workshops for primary schools. Accredited courses include the Extended Project Qualification, Tomorrow’s Teachers and the Arts Award. For the current year a ‘Psychology for Beginners’ course is being introduced in conjunction with Edge Hill University.

In addition, students take part in a wide variety of community service and extra-curricular activities. In the past, these have included participation in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, Peer Mentoring and Paired Reading with younger students. In recent years there have been regular trips to the Russell Group universities, Krakow and Barbados!

If you would like to find out more about our Sixth Form you are most welcome to attend Sixth Form Open Evening on Thursday 26 November at 7:00pm. Communication with Parents Formby High School

We believe that students are more likely to make progress if parents and teachers are all seen to be working together in the best interests of the student. There are many opportunities throughout the school year for parents and the school to be in contact with each other:

• Student Planners – this should be checked weekly by parents and can be used by parents and staff to make comments or write a note. • Parent Consultation Evenings – when all subject teachers are available for consultation. These are held for each year group in the school and normally take place from 4:30pm to 7:30pm on a Thursday. • Parents’ Information Evenings – these take place at important points in your child’s education; for example, when making GCSE options choices, when your child is about to take his or her GCSEs or when considering post-16 pathways. • Year 7 ‘Meet the Tutors’ – providing an opportunity for parents of our new Year 7 students to meet their child’s form tutor to discuss ‘settling in’. • Reports – Screening and Progress Reports (SPRs) are issued termly throughout all key stages to inform parents about the progress students are making towards their targets. Once a year, parents will receive a full written report providing more detailed feedback on their child’s progress in each subject. • Website – useful school information, regular updates and copies of correspondence can be found on our school website www.formbyhighschool.com. • Twitter – our twitter feed (@FormbyHigh) provides a useful ‘real time’ update of news and events happening inside and outside school. Parents are welcome in school at any time if they wish to discuss any matter that is causing concern; however, we do request that parents call to make an appointment in advance. We may ask parents to come in if we wish to discuss a student’s progress or behaviour. We ask parents to monitor homework by signing their daughter/son’s planner each week. Parents will receive letters home on a regular basis and for some letters we ask that the reply slip is signed and returned to school.

ParentMail®

The school uses ParentMail® to communicate with parents by email and text message in order to limit the costs and environmental impact associated with sending paper copies of correspondence home. We strongly encourage all parents to sign up to this service in order to improve the reliability and speed of communication from the school. Please be assured that ParentMail® is registered with the Data Protection Registrar and guarantees that all information you provide will be kept private and will not be passed on to any other organisation.

Friends of Formby High School (FoFHS)

Friends of Formby High School Association is thriving. It is an invaluable part of our school life and all parents of students at Formby High School are automatically members. A full programme of popular events is arranged each year and a lot of money is raised for the school. Recently, outdoor table tennis tables and dictionaries for students in Year 7 have been bought by FoFHS and they are currently working hard in support of the school’s library development project. Should your child join the school, you will be most welcome to sign up to FoFHS.

Sefton Local Authority coordinates school admissions and offers on behalf of all schools in Sefton. As an Academy, Formby High School is its own admission authority and determines its own admissions criteria; however, the School has commissioned Sefton Local Authority to administer and apply its admissions criteria on behalf of the Governors for admission to Formby High School.

Admission details are included in the Sefton annual admissions publication ‘Sefton Secondary School Admissions Information for Parents and Carers 2016-17’ which is published in September 2015.

Admission Criteria September 2016/17

After the admission of students with a Statement of Special Educational Needs or Education Health and Care Plan (EHC); when the school is named in the Statement/Plan, we will apply the Admissions Criteria in the following order to allocate places: 1. A ‘looked after child’ or a child who was previously looked after. (1) 2. Children who have a brother or sister living in the same house who already attends the school, as long as they will still be at the school in September 2016. (2) (3) 3. Children who, at the start of the Spring Term 2016, are on the roll of either Freshfield Primary School, Redgate Primary School or Trinity St. Peter’s Church of England Primary School (3). 4. Children of staff where the member of staff has been employed at the school for two or more years at the time at which the admission application for the school is made , and / or where the member of staff is recruited to fill a vacant post for which there is a demonstrable skill shortage. (3) Parents/carers must identify this on their application form. Details will be validated by the school. 5. Other children living in Formby, Hightown and Ince Blundell. (3) 6. Other requests that name the school as a preference. (3)

(1) Looked After Children and previously Looked After Children – these are children and young people (under 18) currently in the care of a Local Authority (LA) or are subject to a legal Care Order sharing parental responsibility with the LA. This includes children who were previously looked after but ceased to be so because they became subject to an adoption, residence or special guardianship order.

(2) Brothers and Sisters – includes step-children, foster children and half-brothers and sisters, adopted brothers and sisters or children of the parent/carer’s partner, living in the same family unit at the same address, who attend the school in question, as long as they will be at the school in September 2016.

(3) Tie Breaker Clause - if it is not possible to allocate places for all applications within any criterion then priority will be given to those living closest to the school measured by the shortest walking distance from the child’s home. We will measure from the property’s address point, to the nearest school gate (using recognised routes known to the Local Authority at the time of measurement). If you require an explanation of how the distance from your home to school has been measured, please contact the Sefton Council Admissions Team.

Tie Breaker Clause (1) If If it is not possible to allocate places for all applications within this criterion then priority will be given to those living closest to the school measured by the shortest walking distance from the child’s home. In every case we will measure from the property’s address point, to the nearest school gate (using recognised routes known to the Local Authority at the time of measurement). (2) Details will be validated by the school. ‘Working together to provide an education for all that is excellent today and will be even better tomorrow.’
