Issue No.50 - 21 July 201 6

With another incredibly successful and fulfilling year behind us, I am very proud to be the Headteacher of the ambitious, energetic and caring school community that is High School. Today we came together for our end of year assembly to celebrate the many achievements of our students which was, as usual, a long list to get through! Well done to all students for your sheer determination to achieve and commitment to seize every opportunity you are given. The assembly was also the time to bid farewell to staff leaving this year – Mrs Kneale and Mr Royds (who between them have accumulated 71 years’ service to FHS) head off to retirement, and Miss Hughes, Mr Valentine and Mrs McMillan also move on to pastures new. On behalf of all in the school community, I would like to thank our leavers wish them every success and happiness in the future. All that remains is for me to wish students, parents, staff, governors and our extended community a safe, happy and restful summer holiday. Mr Mackenzie

…Echo Awards Secondary School of the Year On Tuesday 12 July the Echo School Awards celebrated the best of education across at their annual awards event at Hope University. Mr Corner, Mr Cook and three students, Harry, Drew and Karla, represented Formby High School. We are proud to announce that FHS won the ‘Connex Education Secondary School of of the Year 2016’ title in recognition of not only the school’s excellent academic achievements but also the exceptional pastoral care and guidance our students receive, and the wealth of opportunities offered to them. This award is the result of a great deal of energy and hard work invested by students, staff, parents and governors of Formby High School. It is this very partnership which makes Formby High School so successful and we are all very proud and grateful to receive this recognition.

…Sefton Sports Awards Secondary School of the Year

Formby High School has been awarded Secondary School of the Year at the 2016 Sefton Sports Awards. Amongst tough competition from and Sacred Heart Catholic College, the award was given in recognition of the quality and variety of sports provision at FHS and our commitment to delivering sports for all. With a host of new sporting activities this year, work with over 20 local sports clubs, and a trophy cabinet bursting at the seams it has been a hugely successful year. Thanks to all involved in our amazing PE Department, our Sports Leaders and, of course, all our students who have contributed to becoming Secondary School of the Year!

…Year 10 Battlefields Visit

40 Year 10 students travelled to France and Belgium between 10 and 14 July to visit the battlefields of World War as part of their GCSE History studies. Students visited various sites in Belgium and France, such as Newfoundland Park and Sanctuary Wood. They also attended a ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres where they laid a poppy wreath on behalf of the school to honour the fallen. Mr Slater commented “The behaviour, attitude and compassion of the students was outstanding; It was a pleasure for the teachers involved to spend time in the company of such a magnificent group”.

…Rewards Trips Yesterday was a busy day for all at FHS with the annual rewards trips setting off to various locations – despite the thunder and lightning in the morning trying to hamper the departures! Year 7 enjoyed a day out at Chester Zoo in appropriately tropical conditions, Year 8 travelled to Drayton Manor Theme Park in Staffordshire and Year 9/10 students had a choice between Blackpool Pleasure Beach and an action-packed programme at the Trafford Centre. Despite the warm weather conditions, all trip leaders reported a fun filled day out with students behaving impeccably. For those students who chose to stay at school, there was a menu of exciting events throughout the campus, from a climbing wall, bush craft skills camp, team-building activities to a bake-off!

…Sports Day Oh the joys of the British weather – with sports day being postponed due to heavy rain on Friday, the event took place on Monday 18 July in blistering conditions! With each tutor group representing an Olympic nation, the field was filled with painted faces, flags and cheers of encouragement. All competitors battled the heat incredibly well and the ice lollies sold by Friends of Formby High School were a huge hit! Well done to everyone involved and especially the victorious tutor groups – 7R (Austria), 8F (Cameroon), 9M (Italy) and 10R (New Zealand).

…Year 6 Starlets Our Year 6 starlets group ended their six week introductory programme with a trip to Farmer Ted’s. The group of students who have made friends over the past six weeks also made some furry friends as part of their trip! We look forward to welcoming all our new Year 7s for the start of their exciting secondary school journey in September!

…Sporting Matters Well done to George Scanlon and Joseph Taylor (both Year 9) who this year played for the successful Sefton U14 Football team, clinching both the Merseyside and Manchester League titles amongst many other tournaments during the season; both boys played more than 10 games which earned them the right to receive the District Representative ties. In Athletics, two FHS athletes travelled to Gateshead to compete in the English School Track and Field Championships. Sadie McNulty (Year 9) competed in the Junior Girls High Jump after qualifying earlier in the year. Emma Alderson (Year 11) enjoyed her third visit to the championships, finishing fourth in the Intermediate Girls 800m and narrowly missing out on a medal. The Young Sports Leaders excelled themselves during the recent Redgate Sports Day, demonstrating their now trademark outstanding leadership skills. Well done to all for the FHS Sports Day event – Mr Kaye requested a special mention for the crushing victory in the staff relay race by team Symes/Slater/Kaye/VeryFastPEStudent!
