2 Foreword / NRK 2007

The 1st of December was a red-letter day in the history of NRK. An old dream and vision for comprehensive expansion of the services provided by the organisation for children was finally realised with the establishment of the NRK Super TV channel. Earlier on during the year this children’s channel had been launched first on the radio and then on the Super portal on the . With the advent of this TV channel, NRK’s “Super Universe” for children up to the age of 12 was finally complete.

This increased commitment to children lies the closest it is possible to come to the centre of NRK’s social mandate. At the same time it was included in one of the most comprehensive changes made to NRK’s services since the establishment of TV in Norway, i.e. the develop ment of NRK’s new, digital ground network for TV distribution. For the first time this network will ensure that all licence payers in Norway will gain access to all of NRK’s services on both the TV and radio. This represents a basic democratisation of access by the public to the content provided by NRK, and for the first time ever it unites Norway under one “NRK kingdom”. We have always been proud of the breadth and quality of our services, but the fact that most parts of the country have lacked access to a few or many of these services has previously been a weak point. This applied in particular to NRK2, which ever since the middle of the 90s has suffered from extremely limited cover.

This, our general report for 2007 is being presented under the following title: “More extensive and better services from NRK — for everyone”. One of the most important conditions stipulated by the authorities in return for allowing us to close down our old, analogue TV broadcasts is that the public should acquire more extensive services with the digital work than they did with the analogue one. In addition to the Super Universe for children, we therefore re-launched NRK2 on Monday September 3 as a pure, background documentary and news channel. On the same day the new NRK3 saw the light of day — a long-awaited service designed especially for a young, adult public. Several channels and a new digital text TV were also launched during the course of the year. NRK has thus complied in good measure with all the contents requirements stipulated by the authorities.

2007 was also a year during which our long-term commitment towards having a better and more attractive online service started to bear fruit. nrk.no was the fastest growing Norwegian media website which experienced a 70% increase in usage during the course of the year. During its debate on the government’s White Paper no. 30 — “Broadcasting in a Digital Future” — the (the Norwegian parliament) also decided that the Internet should be incorporated in NRK’s general broadcasting commitments. It is thus also satisfying to see that we have the ability to produce and offer attractive services on this platform as well.

At the end of the day it is NRK’s ability to create good, valuable content that helps to decide our future. It is obviously of decisive importance that we have the ability to revamp our dis- tribution so that we are present at all times on the channels and platforms expected and demanded by the public. However, without good content we would have no chance of success.

50-year-old in new costume

Dagsrevyen (NRK1’s 7 o’clock news bulletin) has been going for 50 years and has maintained its status as NRK’s flagship programme. A 65% market share in 2007 shows that this NRK news bulletin still enjoys considerable popular support. Following a reorganisation in 2007, greater focus has been placed on background and analysis in Dagsrevyen, while con tinuous news updates are also taking place on other platforms. News / NRK 2007

3-5 Programme requirements As regards both radio and , NRK’s overall nationwide programming shall include at least daily § proprietary news broadcasts.

Erfaring og tyngde: Nina Owing, Ingvild Bryn og Geir Helljesen var programledere under Valgnatten 2007.

New design and contents profile During the autumn of 2007 all of NRK’s news and sports programmes acquired a new, common visual identity. The Marienlyst and regional studios were all altered, and changes were also made to the organisation’s web site and mobile phones. This was all based on the desire to have one central, visual broadcaster of news and sport. NRK Nyheter (the NRK News) is now unmistakably the broadcaster of all news bulletins and sports broadcasts on the news, regardless of the genre.

This project was the result of collaboration between NRK’s News Division, its Design Department and the English design agency Kemistry. In March 2008 its new visual identity won the Norwegian Design Council’s Good Design Award in the Visual Communication category.

New NRK2 Developments relating to content have also been equally important as new designs, studios and vignettes. These have resulted in greater depth, more background and consequence journalism on NRK’s main broadcasts, more culture on Kveldsnytt (the Evening News) and more public journalism — particularly at the regional offices. According to News Editor Gro Holm, NRK Nyheter is designed to espouse a closer and deeper approach. At the same time speed is being cultivated on NRK2 and the Internet.

On September 3 the new NRK2 started broadcasting news from 0630 hours until Dagsrevyen at 1900 hours. This channel cultivates background, documentaries and news. The news side of NRK2 focuses on updates, but it is also designed to be a contingency channel for major events. NRK’s regional offices also play an important role as contributors. During some parts of the day the contents of the online news player are broadcast in TV format, while during the afternoon news updates are broadcast from the new studio at Marienlyst.

5 News / NRK 2007

Gry Blekastad Almås er en av Dagsrevyens yngste programledere.

Extensive election coverage NRK’s coverage of the 2007 local government elections was more extensive than ever, with a huge commitment being made to online, radio and TV coverage. The regional offices played a very important role on all platforms, and Marienlyst and the regional offices cooperated more closely than ever before. One new aspect involved TV election broadcasts by the regional offices on four weekdays per week. Redaksjon EN was rechristened Valg 07 Duell, with 10 minutes being devoted simultaneously to the regional areas.

P1 also had an election magazine with a strong regional identity. However, NRK’s greatest commitment was probably its initiative on nrk.no. NRK has never previously devoted such substantial resources to online coverage of a local government election. In addition to continuous news updates, a number of innovations were introduced in an attempt to increase public enthusiasm.

The News on nrk.no 2007 was the year when nrk.no started to focus seriously on its online operations, and this showed in traffic developments. New hit records were set almost every month. On May 30 two news readers unintentionally contributed towards new records when they succumbed to a fit of laughter. Over 257,000 unique users visited nrk.no on that day, and 119,000 of these clicked on the online player to watch Susann Michaelsen and Gry Blekastad Almås collapse with laughter live. The online player provides TV news in a brief format when so desired.

The news portal on nrk.no was one of NRK’s services that was mainly responsible for ensuring that NRK was Norway’s third largest online media house in 2008.

The News on P1 Dagsnytt (the Daily News) at 0730 hours, 1230 hours and 1730 hours are important new broadcasts on NRK P1. This channel also devotes several hours each day to social and current affairs programmes such as Norgesglasset and Her og Nå (Here and Now) as well as Ukeslutt on Saturdays.

The News on P2 Dagsnytt Atten (the 6 o’clock news) is this channel’s flagship in respect of current affairs and debates. When NRK2 was re-launched this programme also became a permanent fixture on the TV. In February 2008 Dagsnytt Atten was the most viewed programme on NRK2, and it now has higher overall viewing statistics than ever before.

Ukeslutt (Weekend), Verden på lørdag (The World on Saturday) and Søndagsavisa (The Sunday News) are also important current affairs programmes on P2.

Nyhetsmorgen (News Morning) from 0629 to 0800 hours on weekdays provides the public with a wide spectrum of daily news events in rapid succession, including news, financial news, foreign affairs news, cultural news, informal talks, local news, sports news and politics.

Osenbanden (The Osen Band) on P3 The youth channel P3 also devotes time to news and current affairs. Osenbanden is a subjective current affairs magazine broadcast on Mondays to Thursdays and Sunday afternoons. This programme addresses both large and small national and international issues. Osenbanden presents its own take on issues and has adopted a different agenda to the common agenda used by other media.

In 2007 Osenbanden placed special focus on drugs politics, everyday racism and environmental problems. One of the items prepared during the election campaign put hidden racism on the agenda. This item, that was produced with the help of a hidden microphone, resulted in a major debate and political consequences. A Conservative politician on the Municipal Council made some racist statements about 8 Osenbanden’s reporter. This item received huge media coverage and the politician News / NRK 2007

Each year, since its conception in 2005, Osenbanden has been nominated in the Report of the Year category, and its items stand out with their bold and original approach to design.

International news Foreign affairs items feature strongly in NRK’s news coverage. Now that TV is becoming increasingly more tabloid-like, NRK’s coverage of foreign affairs is more important than ever. A contents survey conducted by NRK Forskningen (NRK Research) shows that 35% of all the items on Dagsnytt at 0730 hours on the radio and Dagsrevynen on NRK1 are foreign affairs items. This percentage is the same as that arrived at in a similar survey conducted in 2006.

NRK’s foreign affairs editorial office has thirty editorial members of staff, twenty at Marienlyst and ten abroad. NRK places emphasis on the fact that its reporters should possess all-round skills and have the ability to familiarise themselves with complicated matters at short notice. NRK’s foreign affairs reporters also cultivate their own specialist fields, defined on the basis of special interests and geographical knowledge. Half of the editorial members of staff at Marienlyst have previously worked as correspondents. In 2007 NRK had seven permanent correspondents and three full-time freelancers.

NRK programmes that place special focus on foreign affairs material are (Foreign Affairs) on NRK1, Søndagsrevyen (the Sunday News) on NRK1, Verden i dag (The World Today) on P2 and Verden på lørdag (The World on Saturday) on P2.

SKUP prize for Dagsrevyen Norwegian-Somali girls are sent to Somalia to be circumcised. Dagsrevyen chronicled this practice through a series of interviews with 10 Somali circumcisers. These reports resulted in measures being imposed by the Norwegian authorities in order to prevent this practice, and video reporter Tormod Strand received both the VJ prize and the SKUP prize awarded by the Norwegian Foundation for Investigative Journalism (SKUP) for his report.

Proprietary productions All of NRK’s daily news broadcasts are proprietary productions. Only NRK Alltid Nyheter is used for the transmission of some of the most important news broadcasts sent by 9 Swedish Radio and the BBC. Children / NRK 2007

The children’s own Super channel

NRK has a long tradition of creating quality TV for children. 2007 represented a milestone with the launch of the NRK Super channel for children on December 1. Superuniverset (the Super Universe) is not just a new TV channel, but a fully integrated radio, online and TV alternative for children. The presenters, who talk with and to children on both the radio and TV, are unique and help to make NRK different to the other children’s channels. Children / NRK 2007

3-5 Programme requirements As regards both radio and television, NRK’s overall nationwide programming shall include at least: § b) Daily Norwegian-language programmes for children under the age of 12. e) Regular Norwegian-language programmes for young people.

Superjul: 1.desember var startskuddet for første episode av julekalender Barnas superjul og den nye barnekanalen NRK Super.

Super on the TV With the establishment of Super, NRK has achieved a six-fold increase in the program mes being offered to children, up from 750 to 4,380 broadcasting hours per year. NRK Super provides entertainment, humour, seriousness, drama, shows, consumer material, news, music, quiz programmes and documentaries. Programmes are broadcast between 0700 and 1900 hrs. All children’s programmes on NRK1 are shown at the same time on NRK Super.

The new channel is divided into Superbarn for children aged 2 to 7, and Superstore for children aged 8 to 12. Superbarn is broadcast at 0700-1000 hrs each morning and Barne-TV (Children’s TV) is broadcast at 1800 hrs.

Superbarn For the first time NRK has created a programme that is tailor-made for children between the ages of 2 and 4. Fantorangen is a cross between an elephant and an orang-utan and he provides entertainment every morning on NRK Super. The aim of this programme slot is to provide this target group with something to experience and learn. It consists of cartoon films and short stories about Fantorang.

NRK’s advent calendar at 1800 hrs on NRK1 and NRK Super is also for Superbarna. Barnas Superjul (Children’s Super Christmas) in 2007 is a continuation of the popular children’s TV concept called Barnas Supershow, where children are the presenters and run the show themselves. In Barnas Superjul the children made preparations for Christmas in their own special way. There was a , cooking, tips, challenges and music videos. Viewers were also able to follow Willy, who did what she could to save Christmas, in a drama series entitled Willy’s Christmas. 11 Children / NRK 2007

Superstore Superstore is on every day at 1300-1800 hrs and 1840-1900 hrs. Several new programmes were also launched for this target group in 2007.

The series entitled Gaven (The Present) is about friendship. NRK asked Norwegian children if they had any friends who had done something special or who had experienced something in their lives for which they deserved a present.

Children from north to south sent in DVDs providing information about their friends. They all had something in common, i.e. they all had the world’s best friend. The nature of the present was something that was decided jointly by NRK and the children. The presents were important, but the most important thing about these programmes was the generosity displayed by Norwegian children. Another series of Gaven will be broadcast in 2008.

Megafon is a TV and Internet concept designed to turn young people into smarter consumers and members of society. The TV version of Megafon is a dramatised feature programme where children adopt the roles of reporters and actors. In the online version children can vote about dramatised dilemmas, exchange second-hand items in the Supermarket and discuss Megafon items in a forum.

In the family show called Superkåringen (Super Selection) children and young people were able to select the winners of body tricks, hairstyles and Norway’s best school song. The prizes ranged from meeting Morten Gamst Pedersen to receiving a video of one’s school song. It all started on the Internet on September 1 and ended with the opening of NRK Super on the TV.

In December 2007 NRK Super had 9% of the child audience during the hours it was broadcast. 22% of children, i.e. 119,999 children, tune into the channel on a daily basis. 12 Children / NRK 2007

Super on the radio The NRK Super radio channel is a service provided on the Internet and DAB. This channel is broadcast via DAB from 0700 hrs to 1900 hrs, and is available online 24/7. The content is the same on both platforms. The broadcasts are based on reusing old archive material, although NRK creates new packaging in the form of interludes and music. From 0700 hrs the material is suitable for toddlers, while after 1300 hrs the content is intended for slightly older children.

Barnetimen for de minste (Children’s Hour for Tiny Tots) is still featured on P1 as well as on NRK Super at 1700 hrs on Saturdays and 1840 hours on weekdays.

Super online The media habits of children and young people are changing rapidly. There are twice as many children using the Internet on a daily basis as there are young people listening to the radio in the 8-15 age group. Furthermore, they spend six times as long online as they do listening to the radio. TV viewing is relatively stable. As far as NRK is concerned it is important to offer content on the relevant media platforms, and changing media habits are an important premise for NRK when planning its strategy on how content should be offered.

NRK Super as an online portal on nrk.no is therefore one of NRK’s areas of commitment. It enables children of all ages to become absorbed in games, activities and online communities where children can meet old and new friends, as well as a media workshop. Whatever children send in can in turn be used on the radio and TV. Everything on the Internet is linked to TV and radio programmes. Following its launch in September this new portal has resulted in a three-fold increase in content for children on NRK’s online radio.

Spiller.no In 2007 NRK was responsible for the launch of a completely new gaming website. Spiller.no reports on games, organises tournaments and covers major events in the gaming world.

Vinner: Elleve år gamle Celine Helgemo gikk rett til topps i Programlederne Nadia Hasnaoi og Stian Barsnes Simonsen i Jr 2007. Melodi Grand Prix Jr.

Junior (MGPjr) In 2007 NRK held the Nordic final of theJunior Eurovision Song Contest at Oslo Spektrum which was attended by young artists from all the Nordic countries and in which they had to compose, write and perform the songs themselves. Dance was also an important aspect and over 6,000 children attended the dance auditions.

MGPjr is also a major venture for NRK.no, with more video content than ever being made available so that the public could watch their favourites again on the Internet.

Thomas P Thomas P is an 11-part drama series that was shown each Saturday on NRK1 during the autumn of 2007. Thomas P is a thriller series for children with a hint of the supernatural. Many children like excitement, and the series encouraged them to reflect on who they are and how they perceive the world.

Afternoon programmes for young people The broadcasting slot on weekdays between 1630 and 1700 hrs on NRK1 is devoted to children and young people of school age. In 2007 Fabrikken (The Factory), a programme created just by young people, was broadcast during this period. Young presenters present films, animations and video diaries that children have uploaded to the online portal or sent in by post. During this slot a live cultural programme called Dunder and a sports programme called Liga were also shown.

On Sundays NRK1 broadcasts Newton, a popular scientific programme for children and young people that is produced at in . This programme was nominated by BarneVakten as the 2007 Family Programme of the Year.

14 Sports / NRK 2007

Bull’s eye with winter sports

Winter sports such as the , cross-country skiing and ski jumping are the most popular sports on the TV in Norway. Every weekend during the winter season almost half a million Norwegians sit watching winter sports during the daytime. Sports broadcasts constitute one of NRK1’s five largest programme categories, thus serving as an important contribution towards the place that NRK enjoys in the hearts of the people. Sports / NRK 2007

3-5 Programme requirements As regards both radio and television, NRK’s overall nationwide programming shall include at least § sportscasts that cover both the full range of Norwegian sports, including sports for the physically challenged, and major sporting events.

Knut Nesbø leder Bakrommet, programmet for de med over middels interesse for fotball.

Winter sports NRK attended the most important sporting events during the past year. The World Alpine Championships, the World Biathlon Championships and the World Skiing Championships were watched by broad segments of the population. During the latter championships NRK Sport and NRK Produksjon were also responsible for producing the international signal.

Sports news Sport involves experiences and feelings, but also politics, money and power. NRK wishes to reflect this in the wide coverage it provides of various different sports.

In 2007 NRK focused on improving the quality of sporting news, something which served to ensure that NRK Sport has make its mark in several significant sectors. Setting up working groups to work on specific topics has resulted in wide coverage of such things as the struggle for the presidency of the NIF (the Norwegian Confederation of Sport), the selection of a Norwegian applicant city for the 2018 Olympics and the planning process relating to the new ski jump.

Sports portal During the late autumn of 2006 nrksport.no launched its own portal which has sub sequently experienced a favourable development. During the autumn of 2007 the traffic on nrksport.no increased by 90% compared to the previous autumn. At the same time this website experienced a similar increase in weekly unique users. During the spring of 2007 this portal was assessed as being Norway’s best sports website in an independent survey. The reason for this was that NRK has a firm grasp of the situation and is up-to-date from morning to evening, with news material from several different channels and media. According to the nomination this portal is by far the best portal at 16 penetrating deeper into political sports issues. Sports / NRK 2007

Youth sport New this year is a more systematic initiative aimed at a somewhat younger public involving the establishment of a youth slot on NRK2 every Thursday at 1930 hrs. This covers a range of sports, e.g. snowboarding, parachute jumping, white water canoeing and BMX.

Football on the TV and radio The 4:4:2 broadcasts on P1 are sent live from Norwegian Premier League matches. This radio programme is the result of the hard work carried out by NRK employees at both Marienlyst and NRK’s regional offices.

This cooperative venture is important, and in 2007 NRK Sport started a training scheme designed to increase the focus placed on sport by its regional offices. Twice a year NRK’s sports staff will undergo training in Norway’s regional areas.

Bakrommet (The Back Room) In 2007 NRK started Bakrommet on NRK2. This is where football people meet to chat and discuss current national and international topics. The programme is aimed at people who are more than just a bit interested in football, and it has been well received by this group.

Sportsrevyen (Sports News) Sportsrevyen is a traditional programme which continues to appeal to the Norwegian public. During the past year its market share increased by 4 percentage points from 44 to 48, while at the same time viewing statistics increased from an average of 569,000 viewers in 2006 to 612,000 in 2007. This shows that the loss of football rights has not had a negative impact on viewing statistics, in fact quite the reverse.

In 2007 NRK Sport also covered the World Women’s Football Championships in China and the World Athletics Championships in Japan.

New radio sports channel On 2 July Norway’s first radio sports channel went on the air. NRK Sport is a fully digital radio channel broadcast on DAB and the Internet, and with effect from September 3 it will also be available on the digital ground network for television. It will broadcast the Olympic Games, World Championships, Norwegian elite series football and Premier League football from the BBC, as well as clips from NRK’s comprehensive archives.

The disabled Sporten will follow sports for the disabled under a separate working group set up to obtain more regular coverage on Sporten’s news and features broadcasts. A huge commitment is being made to the Paralympics which are to be held in China in 2008.

Concerts in radio & online

NRK’s radio channels are Norway’s largest broadcasters of live and recorded music. NRK P1 broadcast 55 recorded and live concerts performed at various festivals and concert halls in 2007. P2 broadcast several recorded concerts and festival music of various genres, while P3 recorded a total of 70 concerts for use on the radio, TV and Internet. The music profile of NRK’s three largest radio channels has generally remained the same since 1993 when NRK’s three-channel strategy was launched. Culture / NRK 2007

MUSIC

Radio music NRK P1 was called Norgeskanalen (The Norwegian Channel) when NRK’s three-channel strategy was introduced. This is an appropriate designation for its music profile. NRK P1 is Norwegian on a Norwegian channel. The music played is mainly Norwegian music, and practically all of it has Norwegian words. P1 is devoted to traditional Norwegian songs, hymns, dance bands, old-time dancing, blues and country music and children’s music.

Similarly P3 is tasked with being more of an active broadcaster of new Norwegian music than covering particular genres. NKR P3 is supposed to be the most important presenter of music for young people in Norway. Right from the start this channel has adopted an active music policy designed to provide people with a mixture of what they want and what they did not know they wanted.

P3 also decided at an early stage to become involved in the Norwegian music scene and not to be just a broadcaster. This has resulted in such things as NRK’s Urørt (Untouched) website where young artists can upload and share music that they have produced themselves. This is not such a sensation today, but when it was launched 20 in the year 2000 it was an innovation. Urørt currently has 54,000 songs and 21,000 Culture / NRK 2007

bands that are responsible for 23 million downloads. Apart from the website, Urørt is responsible for 7 hours of radio per week, the production of a CD, a major event and an annual tournament.

NRK P2 is different to NRK P1 and NRK P3 because its music policy has more clearly defined genres, focussing in particular on classical music, jazz, folk music and world music. Much of this music is hardly ever played on other radio channels.

Grieg’s Anniversary 2007 was the 100th anniversary of the death of the composer Edvard Grieg. NRK celebrated this event with several special productions, including the following highlights:

• Ung Grieg (Young Grieg): Over the years Grieg composed a total of 66 short lyrical pieces for the piano. Many of these constitute the standard repertoire of Norwegian pianists. NRK P2 brought together 66 young pianists from the whole country to record one piece each. • Grieg under jorden (Grieg Underground): On the anniversary of Grieg’s birth, June 15, the Broadcasting Orchestra organised concerts at several of Oslo’s underground stations. • Grieg Podcast: To celebrate Grieg’s anniversary, NRK offered free downloads of selected Grieg concerts as podcasts. A total of 10,000 files were downloaded.

Cultural cruise with P2 and Kork Touring with something so quintessentially Norwegian as Hurtigruten (the Norwegian Coastal Voyage) turned out to be the most beautiful autumn adventure for the Broadcasting Orchestra (KORK). For eleven days the Broadcasting Orchestra toured with a large contingent of NRK’s cultural employees on the MS Trolljord. On arrival in ports without cultural centres, they turned PE halls and hotel cellars into concert halls. Thousands of hours were put in by large numbers of local assistants so that the Broadcasting Orchestra could hold concerts.

The touring programme was in two parts. The to Alta section was devoted to classical music with Håvard Gimse featuring as the soloist in Ravel’s piano concerto, conducted by Arvid Engegård, while Wenche Myhre and Anders Eljas performed as soloists on the southward bound trip.

Opera Guide The construction of a new opera house in Oslo has resulted in increased attention being devoted to opera in Norway. In 2007 NRK started a new series for people interested in opera. Each Sunday, right up until the opening of Bjørvika (the location of the new opera house) in April 2008, presenter Nina Krohn has been inviting the public to participate in musical and historical round trips in P2’s Opera Guide. On nrk.no/opera, opera enthusiasts can keep up to date with the news relating to the opera building, as well as 21 opera and stage news from home and abroad. Culture / NRK 2007

Our Daily Beatles In 2007 it was fifty years since John Lennon joined the forerunners of The Beatles, The Quarrymen, and many people regard this as the birthday of The Beatles. Two presenters from Bergen, Bård Ose and Finn Tokvam, suggested that The Beatles anniversary should be celebrated in style, and they seized the opportunity to play and present every single Beatles song in the order in which they were released, with the A side of each album first, followed by the B side.

The background to each song — along with the locations, people and events that inspired them — was presented in Norgesglasset on NRK P1 on weekdays, with repeats being broadcast on Kveldsåpent.

P1 listeners heard a total of 212 stories and melodies, and the podcast version was downloaded 1.2 million times during the course of 2007.

Art & Literature

Safari NRK1’s culture programme, Safari, reflects Norwegian and international contemporary culture, enabling viewers to watch interviews with artists, architects, designers, film creators and other cultural personalities. Safari aims to link culture with current topics. In 2007 climate change and new religious movements were subjects where Safari showed how artists, architects and designers have different approaches to problems of this type. Fifteen programmes were broadcast on NRK1 in 2007, on Tuesdays at 2230 hrs. When Safari is not being shown on Tuesdays, Bokprogrammet (The Book Programme) is shown instead.

Bokprogrammet (The Book Programme) Bokprogrammet and its presenter Hans Olav Brenner occupy the same broadcasting slot as Safari, with 18 programmes being broadcast in 2007. Brenner has discussed such topics as literary quality and membership of The Norwegian Authors’ Association, he has been responsible for broadcasts from literature festivals in Florida and Key West and he has followed the debut author Robert Reed Flatjord throughout the year as he moved from completing his manuscript to publishing and a reception. The programme also had several contributions from Ultima Thule.

Ultima Thule The northern areas will be an important strategic area of investment for the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the forthcoming years, and this is being followed up by a cultural initiative. P2 listeners’ novel prize Each year hundreds of people apply to NRK’s literature section for the chance to sit on the jury of the P2 listeners’ novel prize. Six listeners from different parts of the country with different literary preferences are selected from among all these applicants. The six successful applicants meet in the Marienlyst studios in Oslo and join presenter Marta Nordheim in making a decision about which novel deserves the annual prize.

In 2007 this programme celebrated its 10th anniversary, and after lengthy deliberations the specialist jury agreed that Kjartan Fløgstad deserved the prize for his novel entitled 24 Grand Manila. Culture / NRK 2007

Kulturnytt (Cultural News) Kulturnytt presents news, reviews and commentaries. Using its own employees who are based at six regional offices, it reflects events and news from all over the country. The editorial office delivers relevant material to NRK P2, NRK’s TV channels and the Internet. The aim is to set the agenda and serve as a key provider of the premises governing the cultural debate.

In connection with the re-launch of NRK2 during the autumn of 2007, NRK started broadcasting Kulturnytt four days per week on the TV, i.e. a definite expansion of this service. Prior to this, Kulturnytt was broadcast twice a week on NRK1. However, with effect from September, Kulturnytt was broadcast Monday to Thursday on NRK2 and after Kveldsnytt (The Evening News) on NRK1. Switching over to a daytime slot has helped to improve its news focus.

Tilbake til 90-tallet (Back to the 90s) These programmes represent a continuation of the Tilbake til 80-tallet (Back to the 80s) series that was broadcast by NRK in 2006. Each programme focuses on three people who set their mark on the year in question. Tilbake til 90-tallet is one example of how NRK is able to make innovative use of its TV archives. Over the course of ten episodes, each year during the 90s is presented by showing archive clips and comments made by famous personalities with a special relationship to the respective year. The series was broadcast on NRK1 at 1955 hrs on Thursdays during the autumn of 2007. On average the series had 577,000 viewers and a market share of 46%.

In 2007 the public were able to follow the adventurer, Lars Monsen, on his trips throughout the year round on the radio, TV and Internet in Nordkalotten 365. Normally online material relating to TV programmes is produced after the actual TV programme, but in this pioneering project NRK decided to turn the tables. The online material was made available on a continuous basis while the editors were making the TV series. Much of the online content was never shown in the final TV series.

The premiere of Nordkalotten 365 was broadcast on NRK1 on Sunday 2 Decmeber. The subsequent online meeting received 2,000 questions and this was a new record for nrk.no.

900,000 viewers watched Lars Monsen’s trips during the eight programmes that were broadcast on NRK1. The series was subsequently made available as a downloadable file using technology on NRKbeta blog. This trial project was well received by active online users. Entertainment / NRK 2007

Med over 20 års erfaring i NRK, fikk Anne Grosvold æren av å ta over flaten etter Fredrik og Først og sist.

Entertainment material has always been very important for NRK. Few programmes unite the population like good, interesting entertainment concepts.

One of the greatest TV moments during 2007 was Idrettsgallaen (The Sports Gala) in January. Over one million Norwegians were sitting round their screens when the world’s greatest alpine skier of all time, Kjetil Andre Aamodt, announced on live TV that he would be retiring.

However, the TV programme that attracted most viewers in Norway was Kvelden før kvelden (The Night Before Christmas) on December 23 which had 1,350,000 viewers and had a market share of almost 70%. This programme was broadcast from the studio in Youngtorget in Oslo, with presenters Hilde Hummelvoll and Petter Nome, accompanied by guests.

Revival of Gullrekka (Golden hits) Nytt på Nytt (the Norwegian version of ) consolidated its position as NRK’s greatest and most dynamic TV success with an average market share of 70% in 2007. This programme acquired a new presenter in 2007 when Linn Skåber took over from Anne-Kath Hærland who was wanting to leave.

Another change took place in NRK’s Gullrekka when presenter Fredrik Skavlan decided that he wanted a change from presenting the entertainment programme entitled Først & Sist (First and Last). After seventeen seasons spread over a period of nine years, Fredrik Skavlan retired, and the final Først &Sist was broadcast on NRK1 on Friday April 27. Først & Sist has been a huge success on Norwegian television. A total of 116 of the 230 broadcasts were watched by more than 1 million viewers. The record was set on November 14 2003 with 1.4 million viewers and a 74% market share.

During the autumn of 2007 NRK’s experienced presenter Anne Grosvold took over a broad casting slot with her talk show entitled Grosvold which started on Friday September 14, 27 had an average of 870,000 viewers and a market share of 50% during its first season. Entertainment / NRK 2007

It had an average market share of 43% and 486,000 viewers.

Norsk attraksjon (Norwegian Attraction) The TV series entitled Norsk Attraksjon, presented by Linda Eide in a red “BBQ” tracksuit, provided a different take on Norwegian reality and was an eventful journey around the country. Linda did not stop at tourist attractions that were already signposted. Instead she travelled about announcing new attractions at her own initiative.

Kvitt eller dobbelt (Double or Quits) Kvitt eller dobbelt is a popular golden oldie in NRK’s programme universe. This programme was first broadcast in 1961 and since then it has entertained the public with classical quizzes over a period of eight seasons up until 1994.

During the last two years a new version was produced to include young people. In order to become better acquainted with the participants and their families, clips were also sent from the waiting room. Targeting the whole family during prime viewing time on Sundays, this programme became popular among all age groups.

TV drama of Norwegian reality

NRK broadcasted three Norwegian drama series in 2007. The Berlin Poplars, Codename Hunter and The Greatest of All are the results of NRK’s deliberate investment in drama during the last few years. The Berlin Poplars was the most viewed drama series on Norwegian TV in 2007, with the final episode being watched by 975,000 viewers. Codename Hunter followed as a good number two. The final episode of Codename Hunter was also available to the public on NRK.no before it was broadcast on the TV. It attracted tremendous interest and there was a noticeable increase in hits on NRK’s website in January. Drama / NRK 2007

Berlinerpoplene: Familiedramaet på Neshov var den mest sette dramaserien på NRK i 2007.

TV drama Drama series are becoming increasingly more important for major international television companies. Specialists who previously only worked on films are now choosing to work on TV dramas as well. This development has resulted in better quality TV drama. Furthermore, the large TV companies have realised that viewers are wanting greater control of how and when they consume TV drama.

The portrayal of Norwegian and familiar environments is important for NRK when creating dramatic productions, and its aim is to create series that can become definite brands that will be recognisable to the public in what is becoming an increasingly more variegated media picture.

The Berlin Poplars The Berlin Poplars is based on Anne B. Ragde’s two bestselling books, The Berlin Poplars and The Hermit Crabs. It is about the ordinary, but extremely unusual, Neshov family. The three Neshov brothers meet for the first time for many years at their mother’s deathbed. This meeting proves to be fateful for them all. Feelings that they thought had been buried a long time ago resurface, and new feelings emerge when dark secrets are revealed.

The series consisted of six parts, written by Anne Regine Klovholt and Åse Vikene, and directed by Anders T. Andersen and Sirin Eide.

The Berlin Poplars had an average of 930,000 viewers, and it was the most viewed 33 drama series on Norwegian TV in 2007, regardless of the channel and country of origin. Drama / NRK 2007

Facts & research for all

Science, consumer items, health and natural history programme have enjoyed a permanent slot at 1930 hrs on NRK1 for almost ten years. The idea of counter-programming facts against entertainment on the other TV channels has withstood the test of time right up until today. Facts and science constitute one of NRK1’s largest contents categories. Facts & Science / NRK 2007

Factual journalism on NRK As news journalism gains pace and adjusts to online opportunities for continuous publishing, factual journalism has acquired the task of delving deeper and covering a wider field. NRK wishes to be seen as a credible alternative, where unilateral campaign journalism is giving way to more thorough analysis and a more balanced presentation of factual material.

At the same time developments are taking place whereby sources are prompting a more professional approach towards investigative journalism. Journalists are meeting information consultants, lawyers and professional press contacts far more often than previously when they had access to company executives, departmental bosses and other managers. Now that NRK TV has a three-channel strategy, it has become possible to cultivate some of this material on NRK2 — the channel for news, background and profundity.

Spekter (Spectrum) On October 3 a programme called Spekter had its premiere on NRK2. The aim of this programme is to place current issues in a wider perspective than that normally offered by ordinary news broadcasts. The editorial office switches between producing topical hours and topical evenings. The topics presented are supposed to be varied, but they should relate to the news picture and offer substance and meaning. Since its conception the editorial office has produced programmes about the press treatment of criminals, Norwegian soldiers serving abroad and Mulla Krekar.

This programme has also provided NRK’s archive materials with added value because they are being combined with new recordings which help to provide a nuanced picture 39 of current issues. Facts & Science / NRK 2007

Now that NRK2 has a new look, NRK’s universe has also acquired enough space to include in its programme a full evening of documentary films from all over the world.

Puls (pulse) — on three channels When Hans Tore Bjerkaas took over as the Director General of NRK in March, this former football player announced that the health of the nation should also naturally fall under the mandate of a public broadcaster.

The Puls programme concept has been taking health seriously for a number of years and is one of NRK’s real multi-media commitments. In addition to being a popular TV programme, Puls has also delivered weekly news items to the radio. On the Internet NRK’s lifestyle initiative, Bedre Puls (Better Pulse) has been enthusiastically received by many.

Jordmødre (Midwives) The production of good TV coverage about the happiness, anxiety, pain and tension that are characteristic of life in a delivery room requires professionalism and respectful behaviour. In its Jordmødre series NRK has managed to document some of life’s most sacred moments.

By adopting a thorough and professional approach, NRK’s editorial team succeeded in working its way along a veritable obstacle course during which it had to take into account professional secrecy, the hospital bureaucracy’s fear of making mistakes in front of the camera and the integrity of individual patients and their families.

Jordmødre was well received by the public and over half a million viewers followed the six episodes on NRK1.

Yr.no The yr.no web site, which was launched in September 2007, is a joint venture between the Norwegian Meteorological Institute and NRK. On yr.no anyone interested in the weather can find forecasts for seven million places in Norway and the rest of the world, including both hour-by-hour forecasts and 10-day forecasts. This weather forecasting service is unique in a European context because it has extremely detailed forecasts and an open data policy. Yr.no quickly became one of the most popular services on NRK’s website and in the autumn of 2007 it won the Norwegian Computer Society’s Rosing prize for the best online service and best language, as well as the Norwegian Ministry of Transport’s prize for the best public website.

In the long term NRK is hoping to use yr.no as a collective platform for more climate material. Access to historical data will enable this website to provide a good basis for climate-related discussions and analyses.

Extreme Weather Week For the second year in a row NRK organised its Extreme Weather Week during the autumn of 2007. Extreme Weather Week is a massive collective venture where the entire NRK organisation places the weather and climate problems on the agenda. Between September 23–30 NRK broadcast over 100 TV programmes and several hundred radio programmes dealing either partly or fully with the climate and weather. There was also a comprehensive online initiative and a separate DAB channel.

By adopting creative approaches instigated by NRK’s various editorial offices, NRK was aiming to show that there is a close connection between the weather, the climate and 42 Facts & Science / NRK 2007

Radio Documentary NRK produces top international radio documentaries. Its editorial office set the agenda with several programmes in 2007. For example, the documentary entitled Kronisk stive brystvorter (Chronically Stiff Nipples) resulted in a debate on Ukeslutt on P1, online reports and items on nrk.no on the same day that the documentary was broadcast on P2.

The editorial office responsible for these radio documentaries cooperates closely with NRK’s news editorial teams and also with art institutions in Norway. Many of the texts of the radio documentaries are so condensed that they will only work on the stage, and during the autumn of 2007 a radio documentary was performed at the theatre for the very first time. Gyrid Listuen’s Nummer to. Fem elskerinner forteller en historie (Number Two. Five Mistresses Tell a Story) was performed in its entirety at the Central Theatre.

Selected radio documentaries in 2007: • Kari Hesthamars produced two programmes about Leonard Cohen’s relationship with his Norwegian muse, Marianne Ihlens. These have been translated into eleven languages and broadcast in nine different countries. • Det er ikke jeg som skal straffes (I’m not the one who should be punished) by Marianne Furevold-Boland. This documentary is about what it is like to have your father in prison. It was nominated as the Best Programme of the Year on Prix Radio and represented NRK in in Berlin. • Et godt sted (A Good Place) by Gyrid Listuen was a documentary about cancer. This programme was also broadcast as a radio theatre programme. • Wall Street Sweetie by Gyrid Listuen is about modern working life and represented NRK in Prix Europa in Berlin. • Faen ta deg, Gud (Damn You God) by Lars-Helge Myklebust is about Christian victims of incest and it represented NRK in Prix Italia in Verona. • Fridomens pris (The Price of Freedom) by Kari Hesthamar is about Axel Jensen’s women and it contained previously unpublished material by Axel Jensen. 43 Minorities / NRK 2007

NRK’s Cultural Department and presenter Steinar Ofsdal were there to present highlights from the festival on the TV and radio.

Minorities are also represented on NRK’s programmes by virtue of their distinctive music. Folkemusikktimen (An Hour of Folk Music), Transit and Musikkredaksjonen (The Music Editorial Office) are all example of programmes broadcasting the music of 46 minority groups. Minorities / NRK 2007

In Transit on NRK P2 the public are closely exposed to music, art and culture that do not exist in their immediate surroundings. Or perhaps they do? Transit transports listeners to all sorts of nooks and crannies all over the world; to warped sounds; to phenomena and cultures that one perhaps did not know existed; to unusual meetings between people.

Linguistic and cultural diversity within NRK In its capacity as a public broadcaster NRK is obliged to cover all aspects of modern Norway. In order to comply with this challenge NRK has initiated a project called Multicultural Recruitment. Fifteen multicultural scholarship holders will receive training in radio, TV and online journalism.

Their experiences and cultural and linguistic expertise are required in order to represent the diversity of modern values and cultures in NRK’s programmes. The aim is for these scholarship holders to help NRK to cover modern Norway better than at present.

NRK’s editorial office for children’s programmes is also working resolutely towards being recognised by all children living in Norway. The aim is to have multicultural editorial staff and multicultural presenters on the screen. In the editorial section responsible for small children’s programmes, two out of the seven presenters speak nynorsk (New Norwegian), and they come from Brummundal/Vietnam, Tromsø, Hallingdal, Trøndelag, Romsås, Oslo/Marocco, , Askøy, Drøbak/Syria, Førde and Tromsø.

Eyes open for new thoughts

In Petter Schjerven’s programmme series entitled Eva og Adam (Eve and Adam) on Wednesday March 7 the topic was equality of the sexes. The Norwegian Gender Equality Act was adopted in 1978. It is supposed to apply everywhere, to everyone and at all times. Apart from one place. Within religious communities. Schjerven asked why this was so, and about the manner in which various religious relate to this.

Adam og Eva is one example of how the subjects of philosophy and faith are addressed on different NRK programmes. The broadcasting company also has its own Philosophy Department that creates permanent radio and TV programmes. Philosophy of life / NRK 2007

As regards both radio and television, NRK’s overall programming shall include programmes on philosophy § of life and religious programmes.

In 2007 a slot entitled Det tror jeg på (My Beliefs) was introduced, where a different person each week was challenged to talk for three minutes about something that they were really passionate about at the time. Last year an average of 612,000 people listened to the programme which is broadcast on Sundays at 1005-1100 hrs.

Åpen himmel (Open Sky) has a regular broadcasting slot on NRK1 on Sundays at 1730 hrs. This programme is sometimes also broadcast on NRK2. Six times year NRK1 and NRK P1 also broadcast a joint service during the morning service.

Sami news The TV news, Oddasat, is the most frequently broadcast TV programme and it also has the highest number of viewers. This programme is broadcast on weekdays at 1710 hrs on NRK1 and at 2230 hrs on NRK2.

In 2007 capacity at the local offices in Tysfjord and Snåsa was boosted when each gained a new journalist and this has helped to improve the content and geographical diversity on Sami radio and TV news broadcasts. These journalist jobs were moved from the main editorial office in Karasjok. TV items from Snåsa and Tysfjord are produced in Southern and Lule Sami respectively. These two Sami dialects will therefore be heard on the air on a weekly basis on national TV on NRK1. This represents a tremendous boost for the Southern and Lule Sami people.

The radio news service consists of news updates every half hour during the morning broadcast between 0700 and 0900 hrs, and during the afternoon between 1330 and 1700 hrs. A more in-depth news programme is broadcast on the radio for 30 minutes every afternoon. Every day the national Sami broadcasts on P2 between 1300 and 1400 hrs contain 5 minutes of Sami news in Norwegian. The radio service also includes news broadcasts at 1800 hrs at the weekends.

Sami children and young people The services provided for children by NRK Sami Radio mainly include Mánáid-tv and a website with the same name. The aim of Mánáid-tv is to link Sami children together into one community and to provide other children with “a window” into the everyday lives of Sami children. With the advent of NRK Super, Mánáid-tv has now acquired more broadcasting time. This programme is now a permanent fixture on NRK1 and NRK Super.

During the past year all the regional offices set upTorget (market) websites as tools for user-generated content. Users can access these in order to comment on articles, provide tips about events, participate in votes and upload their own texts, photos or audio files. During the election campaign local politicians were issued with special invitations to write online. This worked particularly well in the county of Sogn & Fjordane where a successful debate was created among users and the editorial section was also provided with plenty of material to work on.

Public journalism is all about devoting a high percentage of individual broadcasts to popular topics, where the debaters are ordinary people and debates are conducted a long way from the studio. Last year three regional offices, Oppland, Telemark and Hordaland, instigated such public journalism concepts on regional TV.

An insight into everyday life The working day of NRK’s twelve regional offices has been affected by various events during the past year. The following provides a few examples from each region:

Hordaland

Out among the people The aim of Vestlandsrevyen UTE is to allow the public at large to set the agenda and to participate in TV broadcasts. Viewers are able to make topical suggestions. UTE visits different locations each time, and tries to find provocative and challenging angles that are not always completely obvious.

There was an immediate response to the trailer campaign advertising the first broadcast. During the course of a short time the editorial office received between 25 and 30 suggestions about subjects that Vestlandsrevyen UTE could take up, and a surprising number of these contained good, general topics. 57 Regional / NRK 2007

One windmill opponent invited Vestlandsrevyen to Austevoll where two large windmill parks have applied for a licence in this island community. However, the municipal council and the entire population are opposed to these plans. The matter is being considered by the central authorities who are having to weigh up the interests of the local population against the need for clean energy. This is a highly current, public topic that has engaged many people and it is thus a good choice for Vestlandsrevyen UTE.

Østlandssendingen

Local elections and online initiative Local elections are obviously very important for regional broadcasters and Østlands sendingen devoted considerable attention to finding good stories from all the muni cipalities in its catchment area. Now that it has a new TV studio, it was possible to create more animated and in-depth broadcasts than previously. On the actual night of the election Østlandssendingen’s reporters were out and about among all those involved, collaborating well with the news department at Marienlyst.

2007 also resulted in a renewed and greater commitment being made to Østlands sendingen’s website. The online player was ready for testing in December. This provides far better opportunities for reaching out with items that have been created. It has always been Østlandssendingen’s ambition to lead the news race in the region, offering the most hard-hitting, but also the most exciting news in the country.

Hedmark & Oppland

New online opportunities 2007 has been a year incorporating online growth, with the advent of online TV and the opportunity to discuss the editorial dilemmas presented by the Internet. It is good to know that the public’s expectations of NRK in the future generally concern what NRK’s journalists are good at, i.e. good TV stories and credible, noteworthy journalism.

Use of the news player allows the editorial section to present stories in an appealing, clearly set out manner. The Tone awards were a major radio, TV and online initiative. This is a competition for young classical soloists, where the public vote for their favourites. Many young musicians applied to take part, and six of them went through to the final inHamardomen (The Hall). It was a beautiful and solemn occasion, incorporating much youthful humour and energy.

Nordland

Live on all media In 2007 NRK Nordland tried a new way of reaching people directly; long, live broad casts on online TV. During the election campaign this regional office organised a public meeting at Bø in Vesterålen which it broadcast live online for one hour. The public were able to see different politicians to the ones who usually appear on TV, and there was a good, old-fashioned public atmosphere. The regional office is unable to manage such initiatives alone, but by hiring in help from both within and outside NRK it was able organise a successful event.

When the mainland link to Lofoten was opened by Queen Sonja in December, NRK Nordland collaborated with other parties in order to broadcast this event live on online TV. It was also covered on the TV and radio.

Sørlandet

Extreme weather on Norway’s Riviera In 2007 NRK Sørlandet’s news broadcasts were with the weather. Seldom, or never, has the southern region of Norway experienced snow storms like the ones that paralysed the entire region for several dramatic days at the end of February. Thousands of people were stuck in their cars for up to 24 hours on the region’s main traffic artery, the E18, and the police and rescue services struggled to bring in supplies and organise the evacuation of everyone stuck in the snow.

The summer news picture in this area was also affected by extreme weather conditions. Thousands of young people who descended on southern Norway to attend various festivals and other outdoor summer activities arrived to find unusually wet conditions in this part of the country which likes to call itself Norway’s Riviera.

Østafjells

Always prepared It is Thursday July 4 2007. It was supposed to have been a hot summer. Instead, most 59 of the waterways in Buskerud, Telemark and Vestfold are flooding. The situation is Regional / NRK 2007

so serious that the Chief Constable of Nedre Buskerud calls on the armed forces for assistance. Home Guard District 03 makes use of NRK to call up its members. During the course of just a few hours around 900 men are mustered for service thanks to NRK’s ability to notify them via its broadcasts.

NRK Østafjells provided extensive journalistic coverage of the flooding on the radio, TV and online. Over a period of several days inhabitants and tourists in the three counties were kept up-to-date about flood developments, consequences and essential preventative measures.

NRK covers such events from a journalistic point of view. At the same time NRK is involved in some the authorities’ contingency measures. NRK Østafjells cooperates with Norway’s county governors, the police and various other bodies on the provision of emergency measures in the event of major accidents and other serious events.

Møre & Romsdal

Close to tragedy Møre and Romsdal is a county with a rich diversity of coastal industries involving fisheries, offshore and oil and gas. Thousands of people from our county are employed in these industries, and many people are therefore affected when serious accidents occur and lives are lost.

In April several villages and families in Sunnmøre were hard hit when the anchor-handling vessel, the Bourbon Dolphin, capsized and eight people lost their lives. NRK Møre & Romsdal covered the tragedy at close range during the dramatic hours that elapsed after the shipwreck and up until the subsequent accident investigation hearings. The editorial office is proud to have provided leading news coverage of such an important event in the county because it affected the everyday lives of so many people.

With 50 employees in Ålesund, Molde and , NRK Møre & Romsdal lives in close proximity to its stories, close to the everyday lives of people throughout the year - on the radio, TV and the Internat.

Trøndelag

Murder sparks off debate During the last day of April a women and child were brutally murdered in the woman’s home in Overhalla in Nord-Trøndelag. People all over Norway were shocked by this double murder, and it was the biggest and most important crime committed in Trøndelag in 2007.

There murders shook both the local community and the nation and sparked off a debate about both the treatment of asylum seekers in Norway and press ethics. The editorial office at NRK Trøndelag discussed ethics both during and after the murders had taken place, and this subject was once again current when the case was heard by the Namdal District Court during the autumn of 2007. In cases involving children, it is particularly important to show consideration both as regards identification and the degree of journa listic detail provided. NRK Trøndelag is extremely conscious of its own role and is keen to tread cautiously in such matters.

Troms & Finnmark

Environment in the north TV coverage of sulphur emissions from the nickel works in the Russian town of Nikel, just to the east of the Pasvik River, has been hampered by a ban on access to the area. The Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation, FSB, controls a 15 km wide security zone along the border to which foreigners have no access. The neighbouring towns of Nikel and Zapolyarny are now located inside this zone. NRK Troms & Finnmark obtained both visual and audio items from its contacts in Nikel. Although Russian TV was in Nikel and showed pictures of green trees, NRK’s coverage of the sulphur emissions in Nikel was also followed by listeners and viewers on the Russian side of the border. 60 Regional / NRK 2007

The UN’s World Environment Day on June 5 was marked for a whole week in Tromsø by environmental activists, ministers and members of governments from all over the world. The seminars were streamed live via the Internet and thus made available to the whole world.

Østfold

A staging post en route to Oslo? Østfold is the main gateway to Norway, an overland link from Europe and the neighbour of Norway’s main county of Oslo & Akershus which influences much of the thinking in and around Østfold, and this is something that NRK Østfold is fully aware of in its capacity as the country’s only organisation providing full media coverage.

As a county Østfold often falls between two posts. Sometimes it is treated as a regional, peripheral area, while at others it is included in Greater Oslo, according to whatever suits the authorities best.

In its capacity as a regional office the editorial section looks at major, structural issues of importance to Østfold through the eyes of Østfold’s residents. In such cases NRK Østfold’s employees often ascertain that the authorities are not particularly interested in the same issues. Thus Østfold is often regarded by Oslo and the Storting (the Norwegian parliament) as being a staging post between Oslo and Svinesund (just over the border in Sweden). Therefore the fact that the county is regarded as being part of Greater Oslo affects the angle placed on many of the reports issued about major social projects, e.g. the airport, motorway, hospitals, railways and working life. So does the regional office create a campaign for Østfold in such cases? If the answer is yes, is that such a strange thing? After all, part of its mandate if to reflect what happens in Østfold.

Sogn & Fjordane

Anniversary for children’s TV The news on the radio, TV and Internet accounts for NRK Sogn & Fjordane’s greatest commitment. However, in 2007 its greatest success was probably its series on child portraits entitled Her er eg (Here I Am) which was broadcast on children’s TV on NRK1.

After the series was shown at a meeting held by the Asian State Broadcasting Union (ASBU) in , both the Arab TV channel Al-Jazeera and several other Asian TV stations are wanting to broadcast it. The episode, in which Julie Fossheim from Jølster appears as a Midsummer bride and which features the local dialect without any translation, elicited endless applause.

NRK is now producing special versions of Her er eg for the Arab State Broadcasting Union and ABU. NRK Sogn & Fjordane is now planning futher episodes. Photographer Torje Bjellaas and journalist Eva Westvik are able to establish that the TV series they created has attracted viewer statistics that most people in the industry can only dream about.

Rogaland

Culture Queen Half of was on its feet to celebrate HM Queen Sonja’s 70th birthday on July 4 2007. NRK Rogaland covered the celebrations live on the TV, radio, Internet and the Rogaland 24 loop channel. This regional office has a mandate to meet NRK’s social brief in Rogaland on all the media platforms used by Rogaland residents and others. The editorial office is preparing to adopt a multimedia reality and a new media landscape. During the last year this regional office has made an all-out effort online and it has seen a 104% increase in the number of unique users of nrk.no/rogaland.

Part of NRK’s social brief involves presenting and strengthening languages, identity and culture. The Queen’s birthday celebrations served as a taster for one of the largest cultural initiatives ever to be held in Norway, the European Capital of Culture 2008. This is why it is also important for NRK Rogaland to provide wide coverage. 61 Channels / NRK 2007

NRK on all platforms

NRK is the country’s largest media house. 78% of the population take advantage of NRK’s services on a daily basis, i.e. watch the TV, listen to the radio, go online to look at nrk.no, watch online TV, use text TV or watch NRK content on their mobile phones. NRK’s content is popular in many different forms and on several different platforms, but NRK1 and P1 are still the mainstays of NRK’s popularity. Channels / NRK 2007

NRK Marienlyst.

NRK1 NRK1 is the country’s largest TV channel with a varied content that appeals to a broad spectrum of the population. This channel is responsible for almost 38% of all TV viewing in Norway.

The content of NRK1 is evenly spread between different programme categories. Drama series, news, information programmes and sport are the largest genres, constituting 66% of the total content. No one genre occupies more than 20% of total broadcasting time.

An extra 600 hours was added to NRK1’s TV service in 2007, with a total of 7,108 hours being broadcast on the channel. This increase occurred primarily during the daytime, and was spread evenly between the different programme genres.

In 2007, NRK1 broadcast more hours of news during TV “primetime” than during the previous year. However, there was an overall reduction in news on NRK1, which was attributable to the fact that there were fewer hours devoted to news broadcasts during the daytime. This change should be seen in connection with NRK2’s expanded news 63 service following the re-launch of this channel in September. Channels / NRK 2007

Barnas superjul: NRKs julekalender for barn ble sendt både i NRK1 og nye NRK Super.

NRK’s TV channels, NRK1 and NRK2, together provided the population with an extra 700 hours of news services in 2007.

NRK1 had a market share of 37.6% in 2007.

NRK2 NRK2’s contents profile underwent a radical change between 2006 and 2007. On Monday September 3 this channel was re-launched as a pure background, documentary and news channel. The statistics are now starting to reflect the results of four months with a new profile, i.e. the percentage of news on the channels has increased from 1% to 14% of the total service, and the percentage of music has dropped considerably due to the fact that Svisj has been transferred to NRK3. This transfer has resulted in a reduction in the overall number of programme hours on NKR2. In 2007, 7,581 programme hours were devoted to NRK2’s broadcasts, i.e. 742 fewer hours than during the previous year.

NRK2 had a 3.4% market share in 2007.

NRK3 NRK was able to offer a completely new TV channel when the digital ground network opened during the autumn of 2007. NRK3 is aimed at young people of all ages and is designed to entertain by providing series, comedy, music and a wide range of films, and also to challenge by providing documentaries and film club films. American series such as The Wire and Heroes topped the broadcasting agenda when the programme was launched.

NRK3 rapidly acquired a 1% share of the TV market. 50% of its viewers are under 40 years of age, and the channel has thus been successful in serving a target group which usually watches NRK less often than the commercial TV channels.

NRK3 starts broadcasting at 1900 hrs every evening.

NRK Super With effect from December 1 NRK extended its TV service for the first time. NRK Super shares a channel with NRK3 and broadcasts from 0700 to 1900 hrs. By establishing NRK Super, NRK has increased its children’s services almost six-fold, from 750 to 4,380 broadcasting hours per year. All the children’s programmes on NRK1 run in parallel on NRK Super.

This new channel is divided into Superbarn for children aged 2 to 7, and Superstore for children aged 8 to 12. Superbarna is broadcast at 0700-1000 hrs each morning, Barne-TV (Children’s TV) is broadcast at 1800 hrs and Mánáid TV is broadcast on weekdays between 1330 and 1745 hrs. NRK Super quickly acquired almost 7% of the daily viewing statistics relating to children. The Disney Channel took almost one year to achieve the same results, and SVT’s children’s channel took almost 3 years.

NRK P1 NRK P1 is Norway’s main radio station, with almost two million daily listeners. Regional material, news, current affairs, service material and music continue to make up the recipe which ensures that P1 is the first choice among the country’s radio listeners. NRK P1 broadcasts voices which are familiar, and its presenters are knowledgeable about the regional areas. NRK P1 is responsible for complying with Norwegian radio’s commitment to special groups of listeners, such as children and lifestyle.

Other channels/stations NRK launched three new radio stations in 2007:

NRK Sport On Monday July 2 Norway’s first radio sports station went on the air under the auspices of NRK. NRK Sport is a fully digital radio station which is broadcast on DAB, the Internet and the digital TV ground network. It includes coverage of the Olympics, world championships, Norwegian premier league football and the BBC’s Premier League, and this is all spiced up with great sporting clips from NRK’s archives.

NRK Jazz NRK’s jazz station was launched during the summer of 2007 and has provided DAB listeners with the opportunity to listen to night time jazz every night from midnight onwards. NRK Jazz previously shared its broadcasting slot with P2, but with effect from April 1 2008 it will become a comprehensive, 24-hour jazz station.

NRK Båtvær (Boating Weather) NRK has joined forces with the Norwegian Meteorological Institute in establishing a dedicated DAB station for boating enthusiasts. This offer has become extremely popular and usage reached new heights in December when over 90,000 unique users visited NRK’s podcast site and downloaded 590,000 clips. The most popular podcasts last year were Radioresepsjonen (Radio Reception) (P3), Herreavdelingen (The Men’s Department) (P1), Verdt å vite (Worth Knowing) (P2) and Språkteigen (a language programme on P2)).

Nrk.no Nrk.no was the one Norwegian contents website which increased most in TNS Gallup’s official top poll in 2007.

In January 2007, NRK set its sights on reaching 1.1 million unique weekly users and beating Aftenposten.no in the official statistics. Both targets were achieved during the course of the year.

NRK nett-tv (NRK online TV) also had more users in 2007.Each week an average of 181,000 unique users visited NRK nett-tv, i.e. an increase of 96% compared to 2006. In December over 262,000 users visited nett-tv each week, i.e. an increase of more than 101% compared to the previous December.

During the first week of December nett-tv set a new record with 295,000 unique users, attracted by such things as pictures of extreme weather around the country, winter sports, NRK’s advent calendar programme entitled Barnas Superjul (Children’s Super Christmas) and the Danish series entitled Forbrytelsen (The Crime), with all episodes becoming available on nett-tv for three weeks after being broadcast on NRK1.

Language work and the use of Nynorsk (New Norwegian) on NRK Both official versions of the Norwegian language are used on NRK’s channels. The percentage of Nynorsk used varies somewhat from channel to channel. NRK2 has the lowest percentage of Nynorsk on its programmes, but following the re-launch of this channel and more news broadcasts, this percentage has increased from 14% to 16%. The percentage for NRK P1 includes regional broadcasts.

One important measure designed to retain and develop the use of Nynorsk on NRK is the Nynorsk Media Centre in Førde. This centre is a course and training centre for Nynorsk on the radio, TV and the Internet. The aim of the Centre is to increase the use of dialects and Nynorsk by the broadcasting media. Since the Centre was established in September 2004 it has trained 30 journalists in the use of Nynorsk, 27 of whom have full-time or part-time media jobs, mainly with NRK.

Programme subtitles NRK uses subtitles for most of its programmes which have been produced in advance and which have a verbal content. Direct broadcasts, such as the 7 o’clock and 9 o’clock 70 news, most debate programmes and some sports programmes are also subtitled. Channels / NRK 2007
