  • And the Ship Sails On
And The Ship Sails On by Serge Toubiana at the occasion of the end of his term as Director-General of the Cinémathèque française. Within just a few days, I shall come to the end of my term as Director-General of the Cinémathèque française. As of February 1st, 2016, Frédéric Bonnaud will take up the reins and assume full responsibility for this great institution. We shall have spent a great deal of time in each other's company over the past month, with a view to inducting Frédéric into the way the place works. He has been able to learn the range of our activities, meet the teams and discover all our on-going projects. This friendly transition from one director-general to the next is designed to allow Frédéric to function at full-steam from day one. The handover will have been, both in reality and in the perception, a peaceful moment in the life of the Cinémathèque, perhaps the first easy handover in its long and sometimes turbulent history. That's the way we want it - we being Costa-Gavras, chairman of our board, and the regulatory authority, represented by Fleur Pellerin, Minister of Culture and Communication, and Frédérique Bredin, Chairperson of the CNC, France's National Centre for Cinema and Animation. The peaceful nature of this handover offers further proof that the Cinémathèque has entered into a period of maturity and is now sufficiently grounded and self-confident to start out on the next chapter without trepidation. But let me step back in time. Since moving into the Frank Gehry building at 51 rue de Bercy, at the behest of the Ministry of Culture, the Cinémathèque française has undergone a profound transformation.

May 12, 2010 Dedicated to Informative Excellence Issue 7 Spring 2010 Unique Forum Sheds Light on LGBT Issues by Joseph White On Tuesday, May 4, 2010, the Center for Tolerance and Understanding, the Rainbow Alliance Club, the Urban Unity Club and the Office of Student Life partnered for a special panel – Fostering Support for BCC’s LGBT Community – that addressed some of the issues facing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students on campus. The program was the first of its kind in many years but it was an important first step in acknowledging the growing number of LGBT students on campus. Of special note is the fact that much of the planning and organizational work for this forum was student driven. The panel, moderated by Laconia Therrio, featured Student Development faculty member, Prof. Marilyn Russell, Victor Rajcoomar from the Center for Sustainable Energy, and students Sharon Chin and William Murray from the Rainbow Alliance and Urban Unity clubs. The panelists all evoked instances at the College where lesbian and gay students have felt shut out of the mainstream of college life. Rajcoomar added, however, Spokenword artist La Bruja performs while moderator Laconia Therrio and panelists Simply Rob and Katina Douveas that one positive path to acceptance is for students to look on. Photo by Andrew Rowan become engaged in the fabric of campus life and to not isolate themselves in LGBT matters only. Russell added members, from faculty to staff to students, to consider a gay child, stressed that all places and spaces on campus that the College has in the past offered counsel to LGBT the many circumstances that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and should be safe zones, and that it is the responsibility of students but that the support has not been sustained over transgender people face on a daily basis – from coming the entire College community to ensure that a climate of time.

Was this a constraint during the writing process? Not at all. In the beginning, there was the desire of the Musée d’Orsay to associate cinema with the celebrations of its twentieth birthday by offering «carte blanche» to four directors from very different backgrounds.

I am blessed to have amazing faculty whom I admire and respect on my committee. My mentor, Toby Miller, has been with me since the inception of this project and has never failed in challenging me to expand my intellectual horizons and to sharpen my critical thinking skills. Ellen Reese, Scott Coltrane, and Scott Brooks have equally been significant figures throughout the various phases of my academic career. I would be remiss not to mention Karen Pyke and Jane Ward. Collectively, they have offered me invaluable wisdom, advice, and encouragement. I also wish to express gratitude to my meticulous research assistants, Allie Green, Alan Truong, and Angela Wagner, for transcribing the bulk of my interviews. In addition, I clocked in a lot of hours at my two local coffee shops on Ocean Park Boulevard and on Colorado Avenue (“my virtual mobile offices”). I have probably spent more face time with the baristas there than anyone else while I have been dissertating. I thank all of them, especially Alex, Bastian, and Steven.

BAMcinématek presents the US theatrical premiere of Jacques Rivette’s through-the-looking glass thriller Le Pont du Nord, Mar 22—28 One week only! New 35mm print! “The most alive movie I saw at the festival. Leaves me with a whole album of indelible images and unnerving emotions.”—Jonathan Rosenbaum, 1981 New York Film Festival The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor of BAM Rose Cinemas and BAMcinématek. Brooklyn, NY/Feb 28, 2013—From Friday, March 22, through Thursday, March 28, BAMcinématek presents the US theatrical premiere run of Jacques Rivette’s Le Pont du Nord (1981), screening in a new 35mm print. A puzzle, a hallucinatory cinephilic fever dream, and a spellbinding, through-the-looking glass thriller as only French New Wave titan Rivette could make, Le Pont du Nord plays like the darker, conspiracy theory-obsessed cousin of the director’s beloved Céline and Julie Go Boating. This tale of two women follows ex-con Marie (Bulle Ogier), just out of prison, and Baptiste (Ogier’s real-life daughter Pascale, who died two years later at the age of 25), who embark on a surreal, labyrinthine odyssey through a wintry Paris. The film is replete with mysterious clues, codes, traps, and spies and unfolds as “underworld and wonderland merge in the open air; joyous whimsy blurs with justified worry; and Rivette risks exploring the scarifying powers of fantasy and paranoia with a panning, punning documentary eye” (Paul Taylor, Time Out London). Rivette, in collaboration with Bulle and Pascale Ogier as well as Oscar-nominated screenwriter Suzanne Schiffman, made Le Pont du Nord on a shoestring budget with a largely improvised script.
