UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA RIVERSIDE Feminism Without Feminists: Gender, Race and Popular Culture A Dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology by Linda Jin Kim August 2010 Dissertation Committee: Dr. Toby Miller, Co-Chairperson Dr. Ellen Reese, Co-Chairperson Dr. Scott Coltrane Dr. Scott Brooks Copyright by Linda Jin Kim 2010 The Dissertation of Linda Jin Kim is approved: _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ Committee Co-Chairperson _____________________________________________________ Committee Co-Chairperson University of California, Riverside ACKNOWLEDGEMENT This dissertation has truly been a labor of love. I am blessed to have amazing faculty whom I admire and respect on my committee. My mentor, Toby Miller, has been with me since the inception of this project and has never failed in challenging me to expand my intellectual horizons and to sharpen my critical thinking skills. Ellen Reese, Scott Coltrane, and Scott Brooks have equally been significant figures throughout the various phases of my academic career. I would be remiss not to mention Karen Pyke and Jane Ward. Collectively, they have offered me invaluable wisdom, advice, and encouragement. I also wish to express gratitude to my meticulous research assistants, Allie Green, Alan Truong, and Angela Wagner, for transcribing the bulk of my interviews. In addition, I clocked in a lot of hours at my two local coffee shops on Ocean Park Boulevard and on Colorado Avenue (“my virtual mobile offices”). I have probably spent more face time with the baristas there than anyone else while I have been dissertating. I thank all of them, especially Alex, Bastian, and Steven. -

Hell Hath No Fury Like a Woman Scorned. Why Women Kill Premieres on 10 All Access
Media Release 8 August 2019 Hell Hath No Fury Like A Woman Scorned. Why Women Kill Premieres On 10 All Access. Looking for your next favourite 10 All Access series? Then look no further as the original dark comedy-drama series Why Women Kill is launching Friday, 16 August. Available to view at the same time as the United States, the new weekly Network 10 series from Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry, stars Lucy Liu, Ginnifer Goodwin and Kirby Howell-Baptiste. A CBS Company Why Women Kill follows the lives of three women living in three different decades: a housewife in the 1960s, a socialite in the 1980s and a lawyer in 2019, each dealing with infidelity in their marriages. The deliciously dark series will examine how the roles of women have changed over the decades, but how their reaction to betrayal…has not. Playing 1960s housewife Beth Ann Stanton is Ginnifer Goodwin. Best known for her roles in HBO’s Big Love and ABC’s Once Upon a Time, Ginnifer can be seen in 10 All Access’ The Twilight Zone. Her film credits include the animated film Zootopia, Walk the Line, Killing Kennedy, Mona Lisa Smile, Win a Date with Tad Hamilton, Something Borrowed and He’s Just Not That Into You. Starring as 1980s socialite Simone Grove is critically-acclaimed actress Lucy Liu. For six seasons, Lucy has co-starred in Network 10’s highly praised drama Elementary as Dr. Joan Watson, alongside Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock Holmes. Lucy’s other television credits include Southland, Ally McBeal, Cashmere Mafia, Dirty Sexy Money and guest-starring roles in Sex and the City and Ugly Betty. -
APRIL 2016 on Behalf of the Old Globe, We’Re Delighted to Welcome You to Rain! This Is a Special Production for Us, a Labor of Love a Couple of Years in the Making
APRIL 2016 On behalf of The Old Globe, we’re delighted to welcome you to Rain! This is a special production for us, a labor of love a couple of years in the making. The Globe produces an unparalleled variety of work on its stages, from classic dramas to contemporary comedies, but perhaps the most challenging, complicated, and thrilling shows to produce are world premiere musicals. Rain marks the 30th musical to premiere here at the Globe—that’s a significant body of work we’ve nurtured and introduced to audiences for the first time. As you take your seats for this performance and look up at the stage, you’ll see one of the reasons The Old Globe has been able to successfully produce so many world premiere musicals. The Globe boasts the most talented production staff of any theatre in the country. These skilled artisans—carpenters and electricians, drapers and painters, sound technicians and backstage crew—make the Globe’s productions distinctively excellent. And rarely have their skills been more on view than in Rain, one of the DOUGLAS GATES most complex physical productions the Globe Managing Director Michael G. Murphy and Artistic Director Barry Edelstein. has ever created. Our hats are off to them. The musicals the Globe has premiered represent the widest range of styles. Globe audiences have enjoyed serious dramas and light comedies, dance-based musicals and verbal tours de force, with scores ranging from modern pop to more complex symphonic compositions. For Rain, we’re thrilled to have with us one of the great musical theatre composers of the day, Michael John LaChiusa, along with Rain’s incomparable co-creator, book writer Sybille Pearson. -
