September 13, 1919 [Indian River Historical Society- 3294] The dedication of the first Vero toll bridge across the Indian River is on Labor Day, 1920. This is the second bridge across the Indian River, the first being at Cocoa. Is is a wooden swing bridge that crosses from present- day Royal Palm Pointe to the barrier island. Over 300 automobiles cross the bridge to the ocean on the opening day. September 6, 1920 [Indian River Historical Society- 0041 7) The Vero Volunteer Fire Department forms as a result of the loss by fire of the .......- ·!z entire business block of Vero on November 16, 1919. The fire destroys the r Al - '1111 Twitchell Building, Maher's Department store, the Toole Barbershop, the Pool - - Room, and the Victory Restaurant, with the total property loss of $73,000. Approval of the volunteer fire department takes over a year, and another major fire occurs in October 192l, one month before the fire truck is delivered to the volunteer fire deparment. July 14, 1 92 l [Indian River Historical Society- 131 6- 00l] 4 1919 - 1929 The Vero Theatre opens on 14th Avenue. There is room for 850 seats including two boxes on either side and a full- size orchestra pit. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the first movie shown in the theatre. On October 24- 26, 1991, the newly restored Theatre Plaza, site of the old Florida Theatre, is unveiled with apartments upstairs and retail space downstairs. The municipality of the City of Vero is abolished and a new municipality to be known as City of Vero Beach is created, established, and granted a new charter with the approval of Governor John W. Historic Dodgertown is set to host its 4th Annual Labor Day Beach Bash youth baseball tournament from August 30-September 1. Following the Presidents’ Day Tournament every February, the Labor Day Beach Bash annually serves as one of the biggest holiday weekend events on the calendar. With school just underway, the three-day tourney will host a Florida-based contingent of teams ranging from Clearwater-St. Petersburg, Jacksonville, Orlando, Miami, Fort Lauderdale and even the Florida Keys, along with regional area squads. With many teams still completing the registration process, over 50 teams are expected and a number of hotels in the area are already at or near capacity. Games will begin Saturday, Sunday and Monday at 8 a.m. and will continue throughout the evening, while Friday night games are still a possibility as teams continue to register. Admission is just $5 per person, per day or $10 for a full tournament pass. Concessions are available at each field location, including the cloverleaf which hosts all teams ages 12 and under. Additional baseball and softball events in the coming months at Historic Dodgertown include the Elite Squad Fall Invite, Women’s Baseball Championships, Baseball Youth Fall Nationals, USSSA Baseball, Baseball Factory, Softball Factory Select Training, Gold Diamond Softball and Next Level Softball, among others.

    2019 MiLBTM COMMUNITY REPORT LETTER FROM PAT O’CONNER LETTER FROM PAT Dear Friends and Colleagues, Thank you for your efforts in making 2019 another successful philanthropic year for Minor League Baseball, our 160 teams and MiLB Charities. As we prepare for the 2020 season, we have many accomplishments from last season to celebrate. None of our efforts would be possible without the great work of our teams, continued dedication from staff at the national office and the support of our millions of fans nationwide. For a fifth straight year, all 160 clubs reported their charitable giving and contributions, allowing us to accurately assess our collective efforts. It gives me great pleasure to say that in 2019, MiLB Charities donated nearly $50 million in cash and gifts in kind from our teams, leagues and partners — once again setting a new record-high total. In addition, MiLB and its teams nearly doubled our volunteer efforts from 2018, giving more than 26,000 hours in service of our communities. This report highlights MiLB Charities’ many programs and initiatives, including the MiLB CommUNITY Initiative presented by Allegiant Air, the Stars & Stripes Caps Program with New Era Cap Company, the Derrick Hall Pro-State Foundation Father’s Day Initiative, Ed Randall’s Fans For the Cure, the Joe Torre Safe At Home Domestic Violence Awareness Initiative, and the “Cover Your Bases” Sun Safety Initiative with the American Cancer Society. Manufacturers are positioning themselves in the fast–rising smart–bed technology segment, where innovative product design and engineering features are wooing buyers in a new way. Beds, once thought of as ancient technology, have been re- vamped by manufacturers with the bells and whistles of the modern–day tech devices that consumers clamor for. These new bed products are designed around comfort, and not only target the aging population but also a wide range of other users in general. Some of the new–generation luxury beds are equipped with motors and lifts, have multimedia options, surround–sound capability, integrated–massage systems, and other leading technologies. The new battleground for home–furnishing manufacturers looks to be “smart–bed technology,” which is being embraced by growing numbers of consumers across various disposable–income categories. The China National Team has trained at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex on three occasions since 2017, and the complex has a long history welcoming baseball and softball teams and executives from China and throughout the world. For this visit, China has brought their Junior National Team to Vero Beach for five weeks of instruction. The girls, ages 15 to 19, are prospects for the National Team, whose goal is to compete in the 2020 Olympic Games. The 22 team members all hail from China, from different provinces throughout their country. Two American and three Chi- nese coaches teach and oversee the instruction offered to the girls.

EJ Jr. was invited to the upcoming national championship for triathletes, but had to decline as he and wife Kim have a newborn on the way then. At least he will be in-country for this little one! Here is a wonderful story that would never have happened without the thoughtfulness, generosity, and dedication of two of our classmates—plus a timely email from Chick Cikanovich.
