1.1 TOKYO 2020

Article ECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE TOKYO 2020 OLYMPIC GAMES Mitsuhiro Osada, et al. Bank of Japan reports and research papers, January 2016, 21 p.

To start with, this paper considers the economic impact of the Olympic Games in past host countries, relying on existing research. Next, it examines—as quantitatively as possible—the potential economic impact of the Tokyo Olympics, focusing in particular on the following two demand channels: (i) the expected increase in foreign tourism, and (ii) the increase in construction investment associated with this event. Lastly, it provides rough estimates of the macroeconomic impact by aggregating these effects, and then briefly discusses what kind of efforts are required to enhance economic growth in order to ensure that hosting the Olympic Games provides a sustained boost to the Japanese economy. 1.2 PYEONGCHANG 2018

Article AN APPROACH TO IMPROVE SERVICE TRADE ACCOUNT OF KOREA: SPORT TOURISM AND PATTERNS OF SPECIALIZATION IN THE OLYMPIC GAMES

Sooyoung Sul. In: Journal of Korea trade, 2016, volume 20, no 3, pp. 297-314. The purpose of this paper is to quantitatively confirm whether hosting the Winter Olympic Games can improve tourism balance or increase the number of inbound tourists, and to discuss how Korea could maximize this opportunity. It also identifies other critical variables for improving tourism balances and further suggests that the certain characteristics of participating nation's patterns of medal wins at the Games should be better understood to contribute to attracting more tourists. Major contributions of this paper are two-fold: it analyzes the Winter Olympic Games which was rarely tackled; and relates hosting the mega-sport events with the service trade account.

1.3 RIO 2016

Research project RIO SOCIAL CHANGES 2009-2016: IS THERE A PRE- OLYMPIC LEGACY? Centro de Políticas Sociais, July 2016. The term "Olympic legacy" refers generally to the projection of the gains

to be seized by the city after the realization of the event. But can we already assess significant inflections in the historical series of the municipality of Rio de Janeiro in the period between the announcement and the realization of the event? After Rio 2016 announcement, is there a change in the quality of life in Rio municipality? How the local population has been affected during the period of preparation for the Olympics? How has changed the home, school, work, transport, etc? The main goal of this project is to assess the change in the quality of life of the population in Rio after the Olympic venue announcement. It analyzed several areas such as education, labor, housing, public services, transportation, digital inclusion and social development. The unprecedented opening of Rio's household surveys microdata allows a scientifically investigation of the existence or not of a pre-Olympic social legacy. Another goal is to act as an ombudsman of the Olympics social impact in Rio, making the results transparent to society. The project website provides user-friendly software that allows anyone to cross different sets of information and turn them into useful knowledge. READ MORE

Article PREDICTING THE FUTURE FOR RIO 2016: LEGAL ISSUES IN SPONSORSHIP, AMBUSH MARKETING, AND SOCIAL MEDIA John Grady. In: The entertainment and sports law journal,

volume 14, issue 2, pp. 1-4. Against the backdrop of London 2012's highly successful brand protection efforts, Rio 2016 promises to add additional layers of legal uncertainty, with strict Brazilian Olympic laws and a relaxed version of Rule 40 to bolster their Games-time enforcement efforts. Predicting the future for these Olympic legal issues is based on seeing similar marketing campaigns and tactics used at previous Games and by observing how previous organizing committees relied upon the host country's special legislation to respond to ambush marketing efforts. The author outlines how these legal issues in sponsorship are likely to be managed at Rio 2016. READ MORE

Article THE RIO 2016 OLYMPICS: ANALYZING RULE 40'S MOMENT TO SHINE John Grady. In: Sport marketing quarterly, 2016, volume 25, no 3, pp. 182-184.

The International Olympic Committee sent shock waves through the Olympic advertising and sponsorship community when it announced in February 2015 that it was relaxing Rule 40 of the Olympic Charter to allow generic (non-Olympic themed) advertising featuring athletes during the Rio 2016 Games. According to the IOC, the purpose of the Rule is to preserve the unique nature of the Games by preventing over- commercialization and to keep the focus on the athletes' performance. Notably, while the IOC does not expressly reference ambush marketing in stating its purpose, preserving the Olympics' "sources of funding" is cited, referring to Rule 40's critical role in protecting long-standing global partners whose sponsorship dollars fund the Games. Article MEGA EVENTS AND THE TRANSFORMATION OF RIO DE JANEIRO INTO A MASS-TRANSIT CITY Luis Antonio Lindau … [et al.]. In: Research in transportation economics, Ahead of print, 29 September 2016.

Rio 2016 transit supply strategy focused on the bus, with BRT corridors featuring as the main innovation. The backbone of the plan included the implementation of an integrated high-capacity bus based transit network fully integrated to other modes including boat, LRT, metro and suburban rail. The study addresses benefits in terms of travel time and emissions from optimizing services and renewing the bus fleet. It highlights the gains in user's satisfaction before and after the BRT. It also reports measures to improve safety of the bus transit system and important challenges that still lie ahead to overcome problems deriving from the own success of BRT and from overestimating the performance of important BRT components.

Article RIO'S 2016 OLYMPIC GOLF COURSE: CITY'S LAST REMAINING ECOSYSTEMS LEFT "IN THE ROUGH" Charles Vercillo. In: University of Miami Inter-American law review, volume 47, number 2, Summer 2016, pp. 221-257.

To accommodate golf's return at the Summer Olympics, the city of Rio endorsed the construction of the Olympic golf course on land adjoining the Marapendi lagoon-land historically known to be ecologically valuable and environmentally protected. With the Games rapidly approaching, the city quickly passed complementary Law 125, stripping this land of its environmental protection, and instead authorizing a golf course as a sustainable use of the land. Article THE META-EVALUATION OF THE SPORTS PARTICIPATION IMPACT AND LEGACY OF THE LONDON 2012 GAMES: METHODOLOGICAL IMPLICATIONS

Ian Henry. In: Journal of global sport management, volume 1, 2016, issue 1-2, pp. 19-33. The London 2012 Games were subject to the most substantial evaluation of any of the Olympic Games, or indeed any other sporting event, to date, in the form of a meta-evaluation. The paper addresses one of the high-profile legacy goals associated with the 2012 Games, increased sports participation, and seeks to explain the disjunction between national-level participation data indicating little or no increase in participation and programme or project data suggesting significant increases, and thus highlights the limits to this specific application of the meta-evaluation approach. Article NETWORKED SPECTATORS: SOCIAL MEDIA CONVERSATION & MODERATION AT THE OLYMPIC OPENING CEREMONY Jenna Jacobson. In: Online information review, 2016, volume 40,

no 6, pp. 746-760. This paper analyses the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony with the goal of making a nuanced contribution to the discussion of online participation and engagement afforded by social media. This paper applies a qualitative approach of sequential video analysis to the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony interpretive segment. The paper finds the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony celebrates universalism and change, over nationalism and historicity. Despite the Olympics being a "networked media sport" where countries compete against each another in various sporting events, the paper argue that the overarching narrative of the London 2012 opening ceremony is one that breaks down traditional barriers, while simultaneously situating the individual at the centre of "networked spectatorship".

1.6 MEXICO 1968

HOTEL MEXICO: DWELLING ON THE '68 MOVEMENT George F. Flaherty. 2016, University of California Press, 316 p. In 1968, Mexico prepared to host the Olympic Games amid growing civil unrest. The government built spectacular sports facilities and urban redevelopment projects in Mexico City symbolic of the country's rapid but uneven modernization. In the same year, a street-savvy democratization movement led by students emerged in the city. Throughout the summer, the '68 Movement staged protests underscoring a widespread sense of political disenfranchisement: rather than citizens, they were mere "guests" of the state. Just ten days before the Olympics began, nearly 300 student protestors were massacred by the military in a plaza at the core of a new public housing complex. In spite of institutional denial, censorship, and impunity, the 1968 massacre remains a touchstone in contemporary Mexican culture thanks to the public memory work of survivors and Mexico's leftist intelligentsia. In this highly original study of the afterlives of the '68 Movement, George Flaherty explores how urban spaces--material but also literary and cinematic--became an archive of 1968, providing a framework for de facto modes of justice for years to come. Article ART WORKS AS SOURCES FOR SPORT HISTORY RESEARCH: THE EXAMPLE OF 'SPORTS ALLEGORY/THE CROWNING OF THE ATHLETES' BY CHARLES LOUIS FRÉDY DE COUBERTIN

Natalia Camps Y Wilant. In: The international journal of the history of sport, published online 16 Sep 2016, 18 p. This paper introduces the art historical methodology of iconological analysis that is of benefit to sport historians. This three-step approach is a tool for interpreting art works and contextualizing them with relevant biographical and societal information that influenced the artist's life and work. The art work analyzed in this paper is the painting 'Sports Allegory/The Crowning of the Athletes' by Pierre de Coubertin's father, the artist Charles Louis Frédy de Coubertin (1822–1908). This painting was chosen because of its relevance and importance to Olympic history. The painting is signed and dated to 1896 on the lower right corner and belongs to the collection of The Olympic Museum in Lausanne. READ MORE (AVAILABLE ON SITE)

Article ODE TO PEACE OR PRELUDE TO MILITARISM?: THE OPENING CEREMONIES OF THE 1936 BERLIN OLYMPICS AS POLITICAL THEATER Samuel D. Smith. In: Vanderbilt historical review, 2016, pp. 28-

33. When Nazi leadership ultimately embraced the notion of hosting the 1936 Summer Olympic Games in Berlin, the decision entailed an undertaking to which an inherently militaristic society would seem ill- suited: orchestrating an opening ceremony, a celebration grounded in the principles of peace and harmony that could withstand the scrutiny of a leery global audience. Through a dynamic approach that steeped the ceremony's routine proceedings in rich symbolic gestures, the Nazis' audition on the international stage generally succeeded in establishing an outwardly benign atmosphere. However, a thorough appraisal reveals that the regime could not bring itself to fully suppress its martial disposition, which consequentially colored a number of the day's events. READ MORE

According to IOC's evaluation report; all candidate countries should give great importance to sustainable environmental projects and these projects should be managed properly. Furthermore, these projects should identify and be very well adapted to the local community. This study reports that all the candidate countries' sustainable environmental projects were all found to be admirable, however, their existing infrastructure were also pointed out. READ MORE

LONDON'S OLYMPIC LEGACY: THE INSIDE TRACK Gillain Evans. Palgrave Macmillan, 2016, 241 p. This book provides a unique perspective on the behind the scenes planning of London's Olympic legacy. The author had unprecedented access to the legacy organisations, institutions, and individuals involved with the 2012 Games. This has allowed her, in a highly accessible and engaging style, to capture a sense of the unfolding drama as attempts were made in London to harness the juggernaut of Olympic development, and its commercial imperative, to the broader cause of meaningful post-industrial regeneration in East London. The book argues that London will become the test-case city against which the legacies of all future Olympic Games, and other sporting mega-events, will be judged. The author provides the first in-depth case study of a mega-event legacy planning operation, and sets out a constructive conclusion, which details the lessons to be learnt from London's experience. Exploring the relationship between mega event planning, and post-industrial urban regeneration, this book will appeal to scholars across sociology, sport and Olympic studies, anthropology, urban studies and geography as well as policymakers and practitioners in urban and sport planning. OLYMPIC CITIES: CITY AGENDAS, PLANNING, AND THE WORLD'S GAMES, 1896-2020 John R. Gold. Routledge, 2016, 484 p. The first edition of "Olympic Cities", published in 2007, provided a pioneering overview of the changing relationship between cities and the modern Olympic Games. This substantially revised and enlarged third edition builds on the success of its predecessors. The first of its three parts provides overviews of the urban legacy of the four component Olympic festivals; the Summer Games; Winter Games; Cultural Olympiads; and the Paralympics. The second part comprises systematic surveys of seven key aspects of activity involved in staging the Olympics: finance; place promotion; the creation of Olympic villages; security; urban regeneration; tourism; and transport. The final part consists of nine chronologically arranged portraits of host cities, from 1936 to 2020, with particular emphasis on the six Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games of the twenty-first century. As controversy over the growing size and expense of the Olympics, with associated issues of accountability and legacy, continues unabated, this book’s incisive and timely assessment of the Games’ development and the complex agendas that host cities attach to the event will be essential reading for a wide audience. This will include not just urban and sports historians, urban geographers, event managers and planners, but also anyone with an interest in the staging of mega-events and concerned with building a better understanding of the relationship between cities, sport and culture. 1.9 INTERNATIONAL GAMES | JEUX INTERNATIONAUX

PAN-ASIAN SPORTS AND THE EMERGENCE OF MODERN ASIA, 1913-1974 Stefan Huebner. NUS Press, 2016, 397 p. The history of regional sporting events in 20th-century Asia yields insights into Western and Asian perspectives on what defines modern Asia, and can be read as a staging of power relations in Asia and between Asian and the West. The Far Eastern Championship Games began in 1913, and were succeeded after the Pacific War by the Asian Games. Missionary groups and colonial administrations viewed sporting success not only as a triumph of physical strength and endurance but also of moral education and social reform. Sporting competitions were to shape a "new Asian man" and later a "new Asian woman" by promoting internationalism, egalitarism and economic progress, all serving to direct a "rising" Asia toward modernity. Over time, exactly what constituted a "rising" Asia underwent remarkable changes, ranging from the YMCA's promotion of muscular Christianity, democratization, and the social gospel in the US-colonized Philippines to Iranian visions of recreating the Great Persian Empire. Based on a vast range of archival materials and spanning 60 years and 3 continents, "Pan-Asian sports" shows how pan-Asian sporting events helped shape anti-colonial sentiments, Asian nationalisms, and pan-Asian aspirations in places as diverse as Japan and Iran, and across the span of countries lying between them. SPITTING IN THE SOUP: INSIDE THE DIRTY GAME OF DOPING IN SPORTS Mark Johnson. Velopress, 2016, 408 p. Doping in sports is a history of good versus bad. Or so the story goes. Truth is, athletes have doped to do their jobs since the dawn of organized sports. But cleaning up drug-soaked sports has been a mission at odds with the spectacle-hungry interests of advertisers, Olympic organizers, governments, reporters, and fans, none of whom want to spit into sports’ nourishing broth of money, power, and national pride. In “Spitting in the soup”, Mark Johnson traces the shocking trail of hypocrisy that belies the tidy myth of clean athletes fighting corrupt deviants. Journalists spin false claims about amphetamines and EPO. Cold War governments treat anti-doping as an inconvenience. Olympic organizers dismiss the pursuit of clean sports as a budget-breaking nuisance. And U.S. lawmakers tie themselves in knots to enrich snake- oil supplement makers while railing against performance-enhancing drugs as a stain on the American Way. “Spitting in the soup” is an eye- opening tour through the ethical, social, and economic clamor that arises from our ongoing efforts to create a sporting island of chemical purity in the midst of a drug-dependent world. THE RISE AND FALL OF OLYMPIC AMATEURISM Matthew P. Llewellyn and John Gleaves, University of Illinois Press, 2016, 254 p. For decades, amateurism defined the ideals undergirding the Olympic Movement. No more. Today's Games present athletes who enjoy open corporate sponsorship and unabashedly compete for lucrative commercial endorsements. Matthew P. Llewellyn and John Gleaves analyze how this astonishing transformation took place. Drawing on Olympic archives and a wealth of research across media, the authors examine how an elite--white, wealthy, often Anglo-Saxon--controlled and shaped an enormously powerful myth of amateurism. The myth assumed an air of naturalness that made it seem unassailable and, not incidentally, served those in power. Llewellyn and Gleaves trace professionalism's inroads into the Olympics from tragic figures like Jim Thorpe through the shamateur era of under-the-table cash and state- supported athletes. As they show, the increasing acceptability of professionals went hand-in-hand with the Games becoming a for-profit international spectacle. Yet the myth of amateurism's purity remained a potent force, influencing how people around the globe imagined and understood sport. Timely and vivid with details, “The rise and fall of Olympic amateurism” is the first book-length examination of the movement's foundational ideal. MA 27923

3.4 OLYMPIANS | OLYMPIENS

ALMA RICHARDS: OLYMPIAN Larry R. Gerlach. The University of Utah Press, 2016, 291 p. Alma Richards, as an unsung high school student, surprisingly set an Olympic record for the high jump in the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. He was the only native Utahn and member of the LDS church to win an Olympic gold medal in the twentieth century. After a stellar collegiate track career that saw him lead Cornell to three national championships, Richards for two decades reigned as America’s most accomplished multiple-event track and field athlete, winning national titles in five different events. Despite his prominence in the history of American sports, this is the first treatment of his athletic career and personal life. The book traces Richards from his boyhood in rural Parowan, Utah, to Cornell and through his service as an officer in World War I and his teaching career in Los Angeles. His story is that of a remarkable athlete, but also that of a man struggling for personal fulfillment while endeavoring to retain his Mormon heritage amid his changing religious circumstances and participation. More than a century has passed since Alma Richards won an Olympic gold medal, yet this story about man and sport—the drive to excel, victory as validation of hard work, the quest for public recognition and, ultimately, the achievement of self-identity and self-satisfaction—still resonates today. COLLISION COURSE: THE OLYMPIC TRAGEDY OF MARY DECKER AND ZOLA BUDD Jason Henderson. Arena Sport, 2016, 232 p. Mary Decker's clash with Zola Budd at the 1984 Los Angeles Games is one of the biggest and most controversial events in Olympic history. In a head-to-head that gripped the imagination of the world, the 3000 metres race pitted the experienced and glamourous world champion from the host nation against a prodigious, teenage waif from South Africa wearing a hastily-organised British flag on her vest and, memorably, no shoes on her feet. Disastrously, a mid-race collision saw Decker tumble to the

inside of the track after her legs tangled with Budd s as the 18-year-old overtook the American in a battle for pole position. Distraught and unable to carry on, the tearful Decker watched in frustration as Maricica Puica of Romania stormed to gold while Budd, who was heavily booed by the partisan crowd in the closing stages, faded to seventh. Using the famous Olympic moment as its focal point, "Collision course" tells the story of two of the best-known and greatest athletes of all time, analyses their place in history as pioneers of women s sport, and lifts the lid on two lives that have been filled of sporting and political intrigue that, until now, has never been fully told. Employment relations, much discussed in other industries, has often been neglected in professional sports despite its unique characteristics. In four parts the book examines, firstly the regulation of sporting competition both within and across sporting codes; secondly a range of employment law issues such as how contracting and negotiation are handled, how disputes are resolved, and the role of sporting representatives such as player associations. The third section discusses the economic issues related to employment such as transfers, drafts and efforts to achieve "competitive balance". The final section of the book explores contemporary issues in sports management and governance, including anti-discrimination and anti-doping policy. DOPING IN SPORT AND THE LAW Ulrich Haas and Deborah Heale. Bloomsbury, 2016, 298 p. This unique international legal and cross-disciplinary edited volume contains analysis of the legal impact of doping regulation by eminent and well known experts in the legal fields of sports doping regulation and diverse relevant legal fields. It also contains perspectives on medicine and psychology which are intrinsically important areas for consideration in the sports doping landscape. These are thoughtful extended reflections by experts on theory and policy and how they interact with law in the context of doping in sport. It is the first book to examine the topical and contentious area of sports doping from a variety of different but very relevant legal perspectives which impact the stakeholders in sport at both professional and grass roots levels. The WADA Code contains an unusual mix of public and private regulation which is of more general interest and fully explored in this work. Each of the 15 chapters addresses doping regulation from a legal perspective such as tort, corporate governance, employment law, human rights law, or a medical or scientific area. Legal areas are generally considered from an international and not national perspective. Issues including fairness, logic and the likelihood of compliance are explored. 7.5 TECHNOLOGY | TECHNOLOGIE

THE ETHICS OF SPORTS TECHNOLOGIES AND HUMAN ENHANCEMENT Thomas H. Murray. Routledge, 2017, 473 p. This volume presents articles which focus on the ethical evaluation of performance-enhancing technologies in sport. The collection considers whether drug doping should be banned; the rationale of not banning ethically contested innovations such as hypoxic chambers; and the implications of the prospects of human genetic engineering for the notion of sport as a development of ‘natural’ talent towards human excellence. The essays demonstrate the significance of the principles of preventing harm, ensuring fairness and preserving meaning to appraise whether a particular performance enhancer is acceptable in the context of sport. Selected essays on various forms of human enhancement outside of sport that highlight other principles and concepts are included for comparative purpose. Sport enhancement provides a useful starting point to work through the ethics of enhancement in other human practices and endeavors, and sport enhancement ethics should track broader bioethical debates on human enhancement. As a whole, the volume points to the need to consider the values and meanings that people seek in a given sphere of human activity and their associated principles to arrive at a morally grounded and reasonable approach to enhancement ethics. WOMEN AND SPORT: CONTINUING A JOURNEY OF LIBERATION AND CELEBRATION Ellen J. Staurowsky. Human Kinetics, 2016, 315 p. “Women and sport: continuing a journey of liberation and celebration” focuses on women winning access to the playing field as well as the front office in sport. Readers will gain an understanding of how women have been involved in sport and physical activity, how they have struggled for widespread recognition and legitimacy in the eyes of many, and how they continue to carve out their role in shaping sport as we know it today and as it will be in the future. Edited by renowned expert Ellen J. Staurowsky, widely accepted as an authority on college athlete rights and Title IX and gender equity, “Women and sport” facilitates interdisciplinary, research-based discussion by providing a detailed account of contributions from women in sport. 7.7 YOUTH AND EDUCATION | JEUNESSE ET ÉDUCATION

YOUTH AND SPORT FOR DEVELOPMENT: THE SEDUCTION OF FOOTBALL IN LIBERIA Holly Collison. Palgrave Macmilan, 2016, 241 p. Processes of development concerning reconciliation, rehabilitation and peace-building have become a central theme for global organizations tasked with intervening in broken and divided societies after violent conflicts. What can reunite populations divided by war and violence whilst attempting to build a peaceful civil society? This book considers the impact and value of sport, notably football, towards achieving this goal. Using extensive fieldwork from Liberia, Collison highlights the multiple and diverse stakeholders and actors aligning themselves with ‘Sport for Development and Peace’ interventions. By unpacking and conceptualising the ambiguous terminology, complex social effects and the lived experience of SDP, this book draw upon participant voices and the author’s own lived experience within SDP to gain symbolic understandings of culture, identity and the formal and informal social structures in which participants and interventions operate. Collison identifies that SDP has become fashionable within development agendas but it remains an aspirational image, a notion of seduction, rather than a tested method of reintegration and youth development in post-conflict environments. “Youth and Sport for Development” questions the assumptions of SDP rhetoric and programs, and traces the effects of football - the favoured vehicle of SDP- on youth in post-conflict Liberia. Examining three core themes: post-conflict development, youth and community, this book centralises the narratives of young football players in Liberia and will appeal to scholars across anthropology, sociology, sports studies, politics and development.
