XIII Games of the Small States of Europe 2009 Medical Care & Facilities Dr. Costas Christodoulakis MD Vice President of the European Federation of Sports Medicine Associations (EFSMA) Chairman of the Interfederal Commission of FIMS Chairman of the Medical Commission of the Games Games Venues Medical Facilities Hotels (Nicosia and Limassol) Venue Sites GSP Sports Complex, Nicosia – Opening and Athletics Eleftheria Indoor Hall - Basketball Sailing Centre, Limassol – Beach Volley and Sailing Spyros Kyprianou Sports Centre, Limassol - Gymnastics Lefkotheon Indoor Hall Nicosia - Judo Machairas – Mountain Bike Olympic Shooting Range, Nicosia - Shooting Limassol Swimming Pool - Swimming Evangelos Florakis multi-purpose Hall, Nicosia – Table Tennis Nicosia Tennis Centre - Tennis University of Cyprus, Nicosia - Volleyball Medical Facilities - Hotels List of On-Call doctors, Hospitals and Pharmacies will be available to the delegates Hotels Nicosia and Limassol Medical Facilities – On Site For Athletes Medical Stations at each venue site for treating locally small ailments and giving first aid treatments Doctors and nurses manning the station Room for massage Fully equipped ambulances at venue sites Medical Facilities – On Site For Spectators All sites will be covered by the Cyprus St. John Ambulance Brigade with well trained volunteers Physiotherapy Physiotherapy Centres in Nicosia and Limassol to give services during certain hours of the day during the games will be available to the athletes The Centres will be manned by volunteer physiotherapists from the Cyprus Association of Physiotherapists Anti-Doping Control During the games drag tests may be carried out for all sports appearing in the program and for all athletes who feature amongst the first three in the ranking list or, were randomly selected or, belong to a target group submitted for testing. Controls will comply with the provisions of the anti- doping code set out by WADA NOCs will be responsible for ensuring that athletes are aware of prohibited substances as well as anti-doping control procedures Therapeutic Use Exception (TUE) Athletes needing TUE will have to secure this from their IF or National anti-doping organisation and have this with them Under no circumstances will the National anti-doping committee of Cyprus issue a TUE for a chronic pathology Only urgent TUE requests will be dealt by the Cyprus National Anti-Doping committee, if asked by the Medical Commission of the games Urine and Blood testing The Medical Commission estimates the number of urine tests to be between 120 and 150 Blood tests will also be taken Urine and Blood testing The selection of the athletes to be tested will be done by the Cyprus National Anti-Doping Committee according to the instructions of the Medical Commission of the Games The sampling procedure will be done by the National Anti- Doping Committee according to WADA regulations The samples will be sent for examination at the accredited laboratory in Greece Results will be given by the Laboratory to the Medical Commission of the Games WADA and XIII Games of the Small States of Europe The Cyprus Olympic Committee signed an agreement with WADA for the presence of independent observers during the Games from WADA ensuring so the ‘Clean Sport’ idea for the Games Two programs by WADA during the Games Athlete Outreach Program Independent Observer (IO) program Medical Commission of the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe Member of the EOC Prof. Fabio Pigozzi Member of the Organising Committee Dr. Costas Christodoulakis MD Member of the Accredited Laboratory Dr. Costas Georgakopoulos Contact Details of Medical Facilities and Doctors will be made available upon arrival for the Games Thank you for your attention!.
