Dawson, III This dissertation provides analysis on several areas of study related to the history of the United States Marine Corps in the Civil War Era. One element scrutinizes the efforts of Commandant Archibald Henderson to transform the Corps into a more nimble and professional organization. Henderson's initiatives are placed within the framework of the several fundamental changes that the U.S. Navy was undergoing as it worked to experiment with, acquire, and incorporate new naval technologies into its own operational concept. -

The 2014 George C. Marshall Lecture in Military History The Rewards of Risk-Taking: Two Civil War Admirals* James M. McPherson Abstract The willingness to take risks made Rear Admiral David Glasgow Far- ragut, victor at New Orleans in 1862 and Mobile Bay in 1864, the Union’s leading naval commander in the Civil War. Farragut’s boldness contrasted strongly with the lack of decisiveness shown in the failure in April 1863 to seize the port of Charleston, South Carolina, by Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont, whose capture of Port Royal Sound in South Carolina in November of 1861 had made him the North’s first naval hero of the war. Du Pont’s indecisiveness at Charleston led to his removal from command and a blighted career, while the risk-taking Farragut went on to become, along with generals U.S. Grant and Wil- liam T. Sherman, one of the principal architects of Union victory. n September 1864 Captain Charles Steedman of the United States Navy praised Rear Admiral David Glasgow Farragut for his decisive victory over ConfederateI forts and warships in the Battle of Mobile Bay the previous month. “That little man,” wrote Steedman of the wiry Farragut who was actually just * This essay derives from the George C. Blockade-Running in the Bahamas During the Civil War* by THELMA PETERS T HE OPENING of the American Civil War in 1861 had the same electrifying effect on the Bahama Islands as the prince's kiss had on the Sleeping Beauty. The islands suddenly shook off their lethargy of centuries and became the clearing house for trade, intrigue, and high adventure. Nassau, long the obscurest of British colonial capi- tals, and with an ordinarily poor and indifferent population, became overnight the host to a reckless, wealthy and extravagant crowd of men from many nations and many ranks. There were newspaper correspon- dents, English navy officers on leave with half pay, underwriters, enter- tainers, adventurers, spies, crooks and bums. Out-islanders flocked to the little city to grab a share of the gold which flowed like water. One visitor reported that there were traders of so many nationalities in Nas- sau that the languages on the streets reminded one of the tongues of Babel.1 All of this transformation of a sleepy little island city of eleven thou- sand people grew out of its geographical location for it was near enough to the Confederate coast to serve as a depot to receive Southern cotton and to supply Southern war needs. England tried to maintain neutrality during the War. It is not within the scope of this paper to pass judgment on the success of her effort. Certain it is that the Bahamians made their own interpretation of British neutrality. They construed the laws of neutrality vigorously against the United States and as laxly as possible toward the South. -

Roswell Hawks Lamson (1838–1903) By Andrew Haugen Roswell Hawks Lamson came of age during a transformative period in the mid-nineteenth century. An emigrant on the Oregon Trail when he was a boy, he was the first U.S. Naval Academy cadet accepted from Oregon, a hero in the Civil War, and a U.S. District Court clerk. Because of his heroism and meritorious service in the U.S. Navy, three ships of the destroyer class were named in his honor in the early twentieth century. Lamson was born in Burlington, Iowa, on March 29, 1838, one of four children of Jeremiah Lamson, a prosperous farmer, and Helen Hawks. Two of Lamson’s maternal great uncles had been president of the College of New Jersey (present-day Princeton University), and his mother instilled in him a lifelong passion for learning. In 1847, nine-year-old Lamson and his family left Iowa and headed west on the Oregon Trail. They settled in the mid-Willamette Valley near the hamlet of Willamina, where the Provisional Government deeded 640 acres to Jeremiah and Helen Lamson. They eventually acquired 2,500 acres, and Jeremiah served multiple terms in the Oregon territorial legislature and four years as a Yamhill County Judge. The Lamson Homestead is on the National Register of Historic Places. The original Gothic-style house and large barn are one of the few surviving examples in the Willamette Valley from the time period. Roswell and his siblings attended the Oregon Institute in Salem (present-day Willamette University). Within a year of his graduation in 1854, he joined the Second Washington Volunteers and fought in the Indian Wars. -
