It is obvious—at least for rational thinking—that the truth is a predicate that describes the universal, as the patriotism is the one that describes the individual or group. There is only one truth, but there are many pa- triotisms. Within this coordinate system, we should rather talk about the patriotism of the truth: as the universal bears greater value than individual, so, first, one should be a patriot of the truth, and only thereafter a patriot of a group (the group is not necessarily a people, a nation, or a state). The patriotism of the truth is the true patriotism, as it comprises in itself or replaces itself (or subordinates under itself) the patriotism of a group as it is com- monly understood. Thus, we can read and interpret the famous words of Peter Chaadaev that the love of the truth is much more beautiful than the love of the Fatherland. -

Victoria Fomina Budapest, August 16, 2019 CEU eTD Collection i Abstract This dissertation explores commemorative practices in contemporary Russia and Cyprus focusing on the role heroic and martyrical images play in the recent surge of nationalist movements in Orthodox countries. It follows two cases of collective mobilization around martyr figures – the cult of the Russian soldier Evgenii Rodionov beheaded in Chechen captivity in 1996, and two Greek Cypriot protesters, Anastasios Isaak and Solomos Solomou, killed as a result of clashes between Greek and Turkish Cypriot protesters during a 1996 anti- occupation rally. Two decades after the tragic incidents, memorial events organized for Rodionov and Isaak and Solomou continue to attract thousands of people and only seem to grow in scale, turning their cults into a platform for the production and dissemination of competing visions of morality and social order. This dissertation shows how martyr figures are mobilized in Russia and Cyprus to articulate a conservative moral project built around nationalism, militarized patriotism, and Orthodox spirituality. -

These sentiments were prevalent up until the union’s dissolution. Something which created an identity void, reinvigorating the need for spirituality. The idea of belonging to a Church was encouraged, in which Orthodoxy emerged as a solution for the lack of identity and provided a source of piety for the people. Amalgamating the scattered religious community, essentially providing a catalyst for creating an identity based on a cultural belonging to a historical past. -

Religion, State and Society, Vol. 20, No. 2, 1992 Patriarch Aleksi 11: a Personal Impression JOHN ARNOLD Since the election of Aleksi 1I as Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia in June 1990, much interest has centred on the man called to lead the second largest church in Christendom at a time of great instability in both church and state. He was the undoubted choice of the church itself in a free and unfettered election, but compara tively little is known about him, partly because the choice was in some respects surprising, partly because he is by nature rather shy and retiring, not given to self publicity and wholly without flamboyance. Indeed, he retains the quiet dignified style and manners of the old Baltic aristocracy from whom he is descended on his father's side. He was born and his basic character and personality were formed in the independent Estonia of the 1930s. In this respect he is unlike the other leading hierarchs. We can only speculate as to whether this element of 'apartness' leads to difficulty in relationships with colleagues and whether it played a role in his election, the Synod already presaging in 1990 the need for and possibility of returning to the virtues and characteristics of the pre-Soviet era. As well as being a gentle man, Patriarch Aleksi is evidently a gentleman (dzhentl'men), carrying with him a touch of old St Petersburg, where his Swedish ancestors settled in the time of Peter the Great and which he served for four years from 1986 as Metropolitan of Leningrad. -

1 Russian Orthodox Church and Democratic Transition in Russia Peter M.Ivanov Introduction. This research project primarily concentrates on the developments in the relations between the Russian Orthodox Church (hereafter - ROC), on the one hand, and the state and society in Russia, on the other, during the last several years. The period under review, if strictly defined, embraces the years 1991 - 1999, i.e. from the time of obvious collapse of the Communist state in the USSR until the nowadays. The main goal of the author was to show, how the Church reacts to different political, social, economic, cultural changes in Russia, in what way it participates in complicated developmental processes. The revival of the ROC itself, which has been severely suppressed during the period of the Communist rule, is an important background of the research undertaken. The period of democratic reforms in Russia (whatever their evaluation might have been) coincided with the times of dynamic revival of the ROC. Disappointing results of the economic reforms, atmosphere of social crisis, political instability and absence of normally functioning parliament and political parties enjoying popular support, - all these factors 2 provide for strong social interest in the role of the ROC in the current development of Russia. It is simultaneously a symbol of hope for ones, and the target of bitter criticism and even hate for the others. The supporters state, that the ROC is the main or only reliable force of national salvation. The opponents see it as a conservative force, separated from the major part of society and doomed to become an ethnographic reservation in the near future. -

In the article shows that the October Revolution brought about profound transformations in Russian society, which posed a serious challenge to the Russian Orthodox Church. The answer to this challenge was the ideological and theoretical activity of theologians, aimed at adapting the Russian Orthodox Church to these transformations. The theologians of Renovationism developed the principles of the social ethics of Orthodoxy, which allowed the church to adapt to the new social realities that emerged as a result of the October Revolution. One of the main tasks of Orthodox theology of that time was interpreted by the Renovationists as the task of religious and moral consecration of the October Revolution. 1. Introduction The first attempts to renew traditional religious consciousness in Russia using the methodology of Western philosophy, history and psychology began in the middle of the XIX century. -
