Ayoung family, husband in the Royal Navy, running ahome and working… just some of the basics that lots of us can put down as astarter for 10. My decision to pick up the baton and jump into working with the Naval Families Federation is one that Isee in a very positive light. Knowing how challenging separation and life’s comings and goings can be, the opportunity to make apositive difference is one that Ireally enjoy.Like most families within the Naval Service we have settled into our own home and have roots and asupport network. The motivation to talk to other families about their experiences, safe in the knowledge that the feedback goes directly to the decision makers, is key for me. Iamdelighted to have contributed feedback that has already changed policy for our hardworking and resourceful families; the dinner time discussions with my husband have taken on acompletely different shape, there have even been afew occasions when Ihave researched atopic and am ahead of him!

Spring 2016 | Homeport 07 Interview |

You’d imagine having been brought up in Portsmouth, that I’d have asoftspot for our Senior Service. And you’d be right. It was only during the Falklands conflict, when Iwas still at ‘middle’ school in Portsmouth, that Ireally began to appreciate the Royal Navy’s spirit of service. Witnessing those brave sailors and marines doing everything in their power to uphold British sovereignty and defend the rule of law, thousands of miles from home, was arevelation. Now,many years later,asMinister for the Armed Forces, I’ve seen how Portsmouth’s endeavour is reflected over in Devonport, on the Clyde and through all our training establishments and air stations across the country. And their efforts continue to deliver above and beyond for our nation – protecting our trade, defending our shores and delivering our ultimate deterrent. In fact, since Ijoined MOD last May, the Royal Navy has led NATO’s largest maritime exercise for two decades. We’ve seen HMS DEFENDER supporting French and American task groups in the Gulf. HMS DUNCAN has become the first ship in the Black Sea for seven years and HMS PROTECTOR, the first in the Ross Sea for 80 years. Meanwhile, HMS BULWARK,HMS RICHMOND and HMS ENTERPRISE have been pulling out all the stops in the Mediterranean to save the lives of migrants. Q: My father passed away last week and my husband is currently deployed. I’m wondering what his right with compassionate leave is?

A: There are specific criteria that are applied to compassionate leave, and in this case your best course of action is to ask directly for the support you need. Compassionate leave is normally granted in the event of the death of the parent of the serving person. In this case, however, where it is your father who has sadly passed away, compassionate leave is not a‘right’ as such, but whenever possible the Navy does try to act with consideration for the family’s needs. We would advise you to contact the Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre (JCCC) who are open 24 hours aday on 01452 519 951, and explain the situation to them.
