Sharon's Noranian Turn: Stardom, Embodiment, and Language in Philippine Cinema Bliss Cua Lim Discourse, Volume 31, Number 3, Fall 2009, pp. 318-358 (Article) Published by Wayne State University Press For additional information about this article http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/dis/summary/v031/31.3.lim01.html Access Provided by University of California @ Irvine at 11/09/10 7:10PM GMT Sharon’s Noranian Turn: Stardom, Embodiment, and Language in Philippine Cinema Bliss Cua Lim Writing in 1965 under the pseudonym Quijano de Manila, National Artist Nick Joaquin vividly describes an era when the decline of the great Philippine film studios spawned an unbridled “star system still in apogee.” In the 1960s, star worship fuels the popular cinema and feeds “the avarice of the independent producer.” The middle- class lament that mainstream Filipino movies are hardly “quality” pictures, Joaquin writes impatiently, misses the point: “The movie fans crowd to a local movie not because they expect a sensible story or expert acting or even good entertainment”; instead, they go to the movies to see the stars they adore—action film kings Fernando Poe Jr. and Joseph Estrada, glamour goddesses Amalia Fuentes and Susan Roces. “Our movie idols remain idolized, whatever the quality of their vehicles, as long as they remain impossibly young, impossibly glamorous, impossibly beautiful”1 (figure 1). This is a form of star worship that, in its emphasis on an unrealizable world, ends by preventing audience identification. The spectatorial plea- sures offered by the star system of the early to mid-1960s, Joaquin argues, are not driven by identification but by wonder, idolatry practiced from afar. -

The exhibition explores the geographic coordinates of Santiago Bose’s practice: Baguio, Manila, New York, Adelaide, Bali, and Spratly Islands. These places are homelands, contact zones, passage ways, hot spots, exhibition sites -- shaping the work of Bose in the same way that the artist in a reciprocal gesture shaped them. They are mapped out in the exhibition to remember the movements of Bose as well as to understand how he likewise speculated on possible worlds beyond the existing cartography within which he circulated with interest, if not with alacrity. After World War II, UP transferred its campus from Manila to Diliman, Quezon City, and the library started to be reorganized in 1954. Under the administration of President Carlos P. aoa TAMBULI Weekly Newsletter The Official e-Newsletter of the Federation of Philippine Industries Volume 18 Issue No. 33 05 September 2014 ______________________________________________________________________________ 2014 Bayabay Media and Sustainable Development awardees feted during the FPI General Membership Meeting; MOA signed The Federation of Philippine Industries (FPI) successfully held its 2014 General Membership Meeting (GMM) last Wednesday, September 03, 2014 at the Grand Ballroom Hotel InterContinental, Makati City. The 2014-2016 FPI Directors and Officers were inducted by the Bureau of Customs Com. John Philip Sevilla who was also introduced by EVP Jesus Montemayor as the keynote speaker. Com. Sevilla presented the actions and changes that they have instituted in the Bureau of Customs which was roundly applauded by the delegates composed of senior executives coming from the Federation’s 34 industry association and 110 corporation members. The GMM was jumpstarted by the discussion of the current serious concerns and challenges that are facing the manufacturing industries particularly on anti-smuggling, environment and power & energy. Chairman Jesus Lim Arranza updated the members of the various actions which the Federation made on anti-smuggling which is the flagship advocacy of the FPI, while Director Peter Quintana and Mr. Emmanuel Go discussed the concerns and challenges of the manufacturing industries on environment and power & energy, respectively. President George S. Chua made an annual report of the other activities of the Federation. Bayabay Media Award FPI Chairman Arranza and the FPI Board conferred the 2014 Annual FPI Bayabay Award to honor outstanding and deserving media practitioners who have raised important and sensitive issues that have serious impact on our country, - by consistently and conscientiously educating the masses in a clear, equitable, and balanced manner, which is a basic tenet required to ensure the preservation of our vibrant democratic country. -
