President’s Message

Hello All:

It's hard to believe that we are almost half way through the year !

We had a wonderful weekend in California for the first Pharaoh Hound Club of America Specialties of the year - the Western Regional Specialty - during the Hound Classic weekend in Silverado Canyon, CA. The venue is gorgeous and the weather was perfect for the entire weekend. Many thanks to those who did the work behind the scenes to pull off a seamless weekend of lure coursing, rally obedience, obedience, and conformation. Putting on a Specialty represents a lot of hours and work to make sure everything comes together.

We have the Pharaoh Hound Club of America Eastern Regional Specialty coming up with supported entries on June 29, 2017, June 30, 2017 and July 2, 2007, with the actual Specialty on July 1, 2017, all in Wrentham, MA. Entries close June 14, 2017. This is also the weekend where the Eastern Honors Award is presented. More information can be found on both the PHCA web site and the 2017 Eastern Regional Specialty FaceBook page.

Following the Eastern Regional Specialty, the 2017 PHCA National Specialty will be held September 7- 10 in Bridgewater, NJ. Information on the 2017 PHCA National Specialty can be found on the PHCA web site and the 2017 PHCA National Specialty FaceBook page. Also, please remember that there is an online store now available to sponsor trophies to support this specialty weekend. If your Pharaoh Hounds have earned a club title throughout the last year, remember it is your responsibility to provide the necessary documentation to Sheila Hoffman in order to receive your award at the National.

We are always looking for support and assistance in putting together these shows. Please reach out and offer whatever help you can.

Editor’s Notes

The SCRIBE was set in place, not just for the recording of show, test and trial results, or even obedience legs and agility scores. Another important role of this Parent Club Newsletter is to share and educate the membership. Owners, breeders and admirers of the Pharaoh hound should be able to find something of interest to them within these issues. And that is where the membership can help. It would make the Scribe Staff’s life a whole lot easier if there was more input from the General membership. Toss me a bone here folks, current dog related topics, new training ideas or shared adventures, even attempted adventures with your hounds. So stop sitting on those brags or ideas, and share with the Pharaoh Hound Membership.

PHCA Awards

Remember to submit your Pharaohs titling information if you qualify for any of the club awards. Award criteria are listing on the website and feel free to contact me if you have any questions. The titles need to be updated with all the newer titling options AKC has added so contact me to discuss if you don’t see it listed.

Awards are presented at the Annual Banquet at the National Specialty. Deadline for submission this year will be August 15, 2017.

Hope to see lots of versatile Pharaoh Hounds and their owners recognized for their accomplishments!

Upcoming PHCA Events:

PHCA 2017 Eastern Specialty weekend will be held in conjunction with the Hockamock/Wampoag KC in Wrentham, MA at the end of July. Eastern Specialty will be July 1, 2017 and supported entries on 6/29, 6/30 and 7/2/2016. You should have received your information packet in the mail. Information also available on Facebook and the PHCA website. Contact Stephen Sipperly for more information.

PHCA Supported Entry: Hudson Valley Hound Association in Carmel, NY on July 23, 2017.

2017 National Thursday, September 7 – Sunday, September 10, 2017 in Bridgewater, NJ (National in conjunction with CNJHA and 3 supported entries). There will be lure coursing as well. More information will be added to the PHCA Facebook page and website as available.

AKC Delegate Report

This notice is being sent out to provide up-to-date and accurate information about the Canine Influenza Virus to help prevent the spread of the virus to healthy (unexposed) dogs. The information provided is not intended to alarm dog owners and handlers.

There are recently confirmed cases of the Canine Influenza Virus (H3N2 strain) that was first brought to and identified in Chicago, Illinois in the spring of 2015. The most recent outbreaks concern the following states: Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina.

Canine Influenza Virus is an extremely contagious airborne disease that is easily spread among dogs, and in rare instances, can be contagious to cats. If you believe one of your dogs may have contracted the Canine Influenza Virus, immediately isolate it from other animals and contact your veterinarian.

Here is some additional information about Canine Influenza Virus and tips for how to minimize the risk and reduce the spread of the disease:

Canine Influenza Virus

• Canine Influenza Virus is spread through: o Close proximity to infected dogs (it is airborne and can travel up to 20 ft.) o Contact with contaminated items (bowls, leashes, crates, tables, clothing, dog runs, etc.) o People moving between infected and uninfected dogs o 80% of all dogs that are exposed to the virus will contract it o The virus lives up to 24 hours on soft surfaces and up to 48 hours on hard surfaces. • Some exposed dogs will be subclinical carriers - meaning some dogs will contract and spread the virus without showing symptoms. • Dogs show clinical signs within 24-48 hours and can shed the virus for up to 28 days from exposure. • Most dogs will completely recover with proper treatment. • Dogs that regularly interact with dogs outside of their own family or frequent places where many dogs gather are most susceptible to exposure to Canine Influenza Virus.

Symptoms

• Dry, hacking cough (similar to kennel cough) • Lack of appetite • Lethargy • Discharge from the nose or eye • Fever (normal temperature is 101 – 102)

Prevention

• The best protection is vaccination. There is now a single vaccination for both the H3N2 and H3N8 strains of the virus. The vaccination requires a booster shot two weeks after the initial vaccine. Vaccination provides the best chance of immunity within 7-14 days of booster shot. • Isolate sick animals and keep them isolated for up to 30 days after symptoms subside. • Practice good sanitation. Use a bleach and water mixture diluted to 1-part bleach x 30 parts water to disinfect common areas such as tables, bowls, leashes, crates, etc. Allow items to thoroughly air dry for a minimum of 10 minutes before exposing dogs to them. Bleach breaks down quickly so solution should be made daily. Keep in mind that bleach becomes inactive in UV light. If mopping use two buckets so as not to cross contaminate areas • Wash your hands frequently, ideally between handling different dogs. At the very minimum, hand sanitizer should be used between handling dogs. • Use disposable gowns or wipe down clothing and shoes with a bleach solution between dogs or after leaving an area where dogs congregate. • Food/water bowls should be made of stainless steel instead of plastic because scratched plastic is hard to fully disinfect.

Treatment

• Treatment of Canine Influenza Virus requires veterinary assistance. If you believe your dog may have Canine Influenza Virus, please contact your veterinarian immediately. Untreated, the illness may progress to pneumonia or other, more serious problems. H3N2 can lead to severe secondary pneumonia which can cause extremely sick dogs with potential fatalities. • Most dogs take 2-3 weeks to recover from the illness.

Containment

• Any dog suspected of having Canine Influenza Virus should be immediately isolated from other dogs and should not attend dog shows, day care, grooming facilities, dog parks, or other places dogs gather. Dogs are contagious for up to 30 days once they have started showing symptoms. • Contact your veterinarian to let them know that your dog may be showing symptoms of Canine Influenza Virus. If your dog is going to a veterinary hospital or clinic, call ahead to let them know you have a suspected case of Canine Influenza Virus. They may ask you to follow a specific protocol before entering the clinic to minimize the spread of the disease, including waiting in your car until they are ready to examine your dog. • Keep sick dogs at home and isolated from other dogs and cats until you are certain the illness has run its course (typically 3-4 weeks).

Consideration for Event Venues

• Use a bleach and water mixture diluted to 1-part bleach x 30 parts water to disinfect common areas including show floors, grooming tables, ring gates, in-ring examination tables and ramps, and x-pens. Allow solution to completely dry (at least ten minutes in order to assure virus has been killed). Bleach breaks down quickly so solution should be made daily. Keep in mind that bleach becomes inactive in UV light. If mopping use two buckets so as not to cross contaminate areas. • When wiping down hard surfaces paper towels are preferred over cloth. • Consider having two exam tables at every ring so that they can be cleaned and allowed to air dry frequently in between classes. • Provide hand sanitizer in each ring and in grooming areas. • Exhibitors should consider grooming dogs at their cars instead of using grooming areas where dogs are in very close proximity.

Dr. Jerry Klein is a veterinarian in the emergency room at Chicago’s largest veterinary emergency and specialty center. He was personally involved in treating hundreds of dogs sickened by the H3N2 virus

during its initial outbreak in Chicago in spring of 2015. He is also an AKC licensed judge.

Parent Club Committee-

AKC Marketplace -Long Discussion about the AKC Marketplace which links the public with Breeders. The upside of this is that the PHCA ‘s information and electronic webpage link are listed on the Main Page. The challenge with this is that anyone wanting to sell their litters are also listed. They don’t have to be members of the Parent Club (or any club for that matter) to list their litters for sale. They do have to disclose if they are members of the Parent Club and/or All Breed Club. They have to list if they are in compliance with the Parent Club’s Health Testing Requirements. We must continually police this and notify AKC if Breeder’s are posting any false information…AKC doesn’t have a method to verify the information posted as yet…a problem in my opinion. For Example: A breeder (and not a member of the PHCA) has listed their December 2016 on Marketplace and states they are in Compliance with the PHCA Health Requirements. A check of OFA Records shows that this is not true…I have contacted AKC accordingly. I have inquired how we can link the PHCA rescue contacts with the AKC Humane Fund page to direct the individuals who are interested in adopting a Pharaoh as well as connecting buyers to PHCA Breeder referral. Pet Disaster Trailer- $1,551,360 Raised in total so far for the Pet Disaster Trailer Project!

The Pharaoh Hound Club of America Treasurer’s Report June 4, 2017

As the incoming PHCA Treasurer this year, I am pleased to provide this report of current financial information for the club. First, I would like to thank our prior Treasurer, Jane Hodnett for her work over the past nine years. She has been invaluable as a source of information as we have transitioned the treasurer’s role. She continues as an important resource and board member as we move forward.

With the change of treasurer, one of our first orders of business was to transfer the PHCA’s funds from the Texas- based institution, Frost Bank, into a bank that was accessible to my home in Delaware. We now have comparable accounts established with Wells Fargo, allowing us access to local branches wherever we are. This represents an important step for our organization as we are now able to have monies deposited directly into PHCA accounts across the country. We will also be able to minimize difficulties for future officer transitions.

For purposes of implementing the necessary tracking of PHCA finances, we subscribed to a 2017 version of QuickBooks Online. With the relative simplicity of the PHCA’s financial affairs, we have been able to utilize a very cost-effective QuickBooks product which is less cost over the year than the desktop versions of the software. Migrating to an updated ‘cloud-based’ product also allows us to more securely store our information in a manner that is available and accessible to approved officers of the club.

Unfortunately, data stored in the old QuickBooks desktop version was not compatible with the new software version. As such, I have manually entered financial information from Frost Bank over the 12/31/16 – 5/2/17, when we transferred all funds to Wells Fargo. The financial reports for the year to date show ‘$0.00’ balances in the three Frost Bank accounts that held PHCA funds. Please note that account balances for Frost Bank were as follows as of January 1, 2017.

• PHCA Frost Bank Operating Account: $ 7,767.82 • PHCA Frost Bank Money Market Account: $ 15,287.96 • PHCA Frost Bank Rescue Fund Account: $ 11,492.26 Total: $ 34,548.04 Wells Fargo Opening Balance for Accts: $ 75.00 (reimbursable expense) • ‘Opening Balance Equity’ per QuickBooks: $ 34,623.04 Note: Mary Severino provided $75 personal funding to open Wells Fargo accounts. The reimbursement is not yet reflected in the ‘Statement of Financial Position’ report.

We must continue to be mindful of increasing revenue through memberships and events, and cost- effective management of our club’s affairs. I look forward to our mutual success as a club through 2017.
