The Elders have spent years learning to pray and communicate with the Great Spirit. Their job is to pass this knowledge onto the young people. The Elders have told us we are now in a great time of healing. The Creator is guiding them to help the young people figure this out. We must get involved and participate. We should pray and see what it is the Great Spirit wants us to do. We need to sacrifice our time to help the people and to be of maximum use to the Creator. Every person is needed to accomplish this great healing.

The staff of Elder Services, Title V workers and Elder Helpers deserve kudos for their efforts that made the 2009 year a success, and we look forward to working at having a better year for 2010. We thank you for completing the surveys as we work on improving customer service and implementing the Balance Scorecard. Tribal Aging Directors Association is progressing with meeting on a by-monthly basis. This past year we had all Wisconsin Tribal Aging Directors from all Tribes attend a meeting at the Radisson. Attendance at the meeting was Yvonne Jackson, Director, Office for American Indian, Alaskan Native and Native Hawaiian Programs, Sam J. Gabuzzi, M.S., Aging Services Program Specialist, Administration on Aging, Title VI Chicago Office, Gail Schwersenska, Director, Office on Aging, Madison Office, Wendell Holt Great Lake Inter-Tribal Council Tribal Technical Assistance Center for Title III, Robert J. Kellerman, Executive Director, Greater Wisconsin Agency on Aging Resources, Inc. and all eleven Tribal Aging Directors. We did information sharing, each Tribe presented on their Aging programs and we discussed reducing duplication of work for program requirements for Title VI and Title III programs. We discussed the Transportation Initiative of the Governor’s Budget and allocation of transportation funds from Gaming dollars. S85.215 for Tribal Elderly Transportation Assistance Program for fiscal year 2010. Tribal Aging Technical Assistance Center. They would provide culturally appropriate and Tribal specific technical assistance to the Tribal Aging programs funded by the Older Americans Act. This center would serve as a liaison to both the Statewide Area Agency on Aging (GWAAR) Greater Wisconsin Agency on Aging Resources, Inc. and the State Office on Aging. The Aging Network has the essential elements to expand on programs for elders in The Older Americans Act. The three main goals are 1.) Person Centered Access to Information 2.) Evidence-Based Health Promotion and Disease Prevention and 3.) Enhanced Nursing Home Diversion Services. The National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a) is working on Project 2020 Building on the promise of Home & Community Based Services. I would like to thank the ONCOA Board for their continued support and leadership in advocating for our elders and the program. They deserve kudos also for participating in trainings, meetings and keeping themselves current with the changes of the Aging Network. The National Society For American Indian Elderly has granted us two VISTAs (Volunteers in Service to America) are students who have received a Bachelors Degree, who work for elder programs. They have three main responsibilities. 1. Research and write grants 2. Develop a Volunteer Program for Aging programs. 3. Work on Native American cookbooks and get Native American recipes. Hillary Lewis-Reimers from Lansing, Michigan ended her term and Daniel Borgstrom from New Richmond, Wisconsin, will be with us until February. As always everyone hates to see them leave. We wish them luck in their future careers. The Elders have asked us to keep Dan on. There may be possibilities. It’s this time of year also that we remember all those elders that have passed. We like to thank those Tribal Departments that were strong in advocating for our elders and working with us. POLICY: Elders on Lifeline & Dialysis. Elders 70 years and older. Elders aged 55 - 69 who are disabled/handicapped and living alone. Elders aged 55 - 69 with serious health/safety issues. If it snows consecutive days lifeline & dialysis clients will remain priority due to the high demand and severity of the illness. 1. There maybe times when the plowing teams will come and clear a path for emergency vehicles and will return the next day to finish. If the plows do not return by the next day, please call the office at 920-869-2448. 2 Snow plowing and shoveling will consist of driveway and main entrance to home only. 3. Elders that have family members capable of shoveling snow or plow trucks they do the plowing. How the Team Works Depending on the forecast of snow When the workers get to the driveway they start: A. Plowing end of driveway B. Path to house C. Another worker gets out starts shoveling or snow blowing sidewalk, ramps & garage D. Driver finish plowing drive way E. Next day workers return and finish the whole driveway and mailbox F. For more information please call: Joyce Ann Hoes at 869-2448 ext 6844 Chocolate cake Sift together the following dry ingredients: 2 cups of white flour 1 and ¾ cups of granulated sugar 1 tablespoon of baking soda 1 teaspoon of salt 1/ 2 cup of Hershey’s cocoa Add to the dry ingredients: 1 cup of buttermilk 2/3 of a cup of oil (I like canola) 1 cup of strong boiling coffee (this part is important, make sure it is strong and that it is boiling) You do not need a mixer for this, just stir by hand until the batter is smooth. The batter is not a thick batter, so don’t be alarmed if it’s kind of thin. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or depending upon your oven. With my old oven, I baked it for 28 minutes, but now I can bake it at 350. ENJOY!! You will love this recipe. The Oneida Community needs a facility of this type . The Anna John Nursing Home is desperately in need of replacement. Why now when we are in such a difficult financial position? . The elders have waited for 16 years for this facility. If not now, when? . The project has endured many setbacks since it’s inception in 1993. . The project has been placed “on hold” twice, lost funding, changed ownership, been impacted by regulatory changes and has gone through the early stages of design four times. .
