The selected texts (64 titles in fiction and 21 titles in non-fiction) were chosen for their age-appropriate language and themes, as well as their applicability to classroom activities. Each entry in the bibliography provides the format and bibliographic information for the text, suggestions for classroom use, the structure and complexity of the text, advanced vocabulary and expressions, use of illustrations, and a summary of the plot, characters, and setting (for fiction) or themes and levels of familiarity and difficulty with subject-matter for non-fiction. Appendices provide further suggestions for teaching reading in the classroom, and four indices present the titles by alphabetical order, publisher's series, theme, and grade level. Ce document a ete elabore dans le but de fournir aux enseignants de francais un repertoire d'oeuvres interessantes et de qualite pour initier les eleves aux differentescollectionsdelalitteraturejeunesse,agrementerleur apprentissage de la lecture et repondre a leurs besoins d'information, de meme qu'a leurs besoins d'imaginaire, de divertissement et d'esthetique. Les enseignants y trouveront plus de 80 titres qui leur permettront de planifier des situations de lecture permettant d'atteindre plusieurs resultats d'apprentissage du programme d'etudes de francais langue premiere du ministere de l'Education/Alberta Education (1998). Toutes les oeuvres ont ete selectionnees a partir d'une liste de criteres bien &finis. Il va sans dire que chaque oeuvre presentee ne respecte pas tous les criteres a la fois, mais l'ensemble des titres selectionnes se veut, dans la mesure du possible, un equilibre et un reflet assez fidele des criteres suivants : L'ceuvre permet une experience de lecture interessante et stimulante considerant Page, les habiletes de lecture et la maturite de la clientele cible. L'ceuvre presente des textes pouvant favoriser l'exploitation de themes abordes dans d'autres matieres. Bibliographie annotee (4 - 6) Francais langue premiere Introduction L'ceuvre contient desillustrations ou des photos attrayantesqui soutiennent la comprehension de l'eleve. Le texte constitue un bon modele de langue (structures de phrases, vocabulaire, etc.) considerant rage, les habiletes de lecture et la maturite de la clientele cible. Le texte contient, la plupart du temps, des phrases constituees de deux ou trois propositions. Les propositions sont facilement identifiables par l'emploi des virgules ou des marqueurs de relation. Le texte contient quelques figures de style et peu d'inversions du sujet. Le sens du nouveau vocabulaire peut etre deduit en contexte par le lecteur. Pour les oeuvres tirees de l'imaginaire : l'ceuvre s'inscrit, de preference, dans une perspective canadienne et reflete la diversite culturelle; l'ceuvre permet au lecteur de se familiariser avec les elements de la culture francophone; le texte presente desactions qui se succedent dans un ordre chronologique; le texte permet a l'eleve de &gager les composantes d'un recit :la situation initiale, l'element declencheur, le developpement et le denouement; le texte presente des experiences humaines, des valeurs et une vision du monde qui suscitent des reflexions chez le lecteur; le texte permet a l'eleve de reagir en relevant des passages qui suscitent des sentiments, des emotions ou des souvenirs; le texte permet a l'eleve d'etablir des liens entre les sentiments des personnages et leurs actions. Pour les oeuvres documentaires : le texte presente un contenu actuel, exact et objectif; le texte offre des niveaux de difficulte varies (longueur, aspects abordes, densite de l'information, etc.); le texte contient les indices d'un texte d'informationdes titres, des sous-titres, des polices de caracteres, des encadres, des choix de couleurs qui permettent a l'eleve d'anticiper le contenu ou de bien se l'approprier. Ce comite voit a ce que les ressources mises entre les mains des eleves respectent les criteres de tolerance et de comprehension du Ministere afin de ne pas presenter aux jeunes des realites trop stereotypees, de la violence gratuite, des propos irrespectueux, etc. Remarque : Meme si lesoeuvresont passé sous la loupe du Comite de tolerance et de comprehension du ministere de l'Apprentissage (Learning and Teaching Resources Branch), it revient a chaque ecole ou a chaque enseignant de selectionner lesoeuvresqui pourraient etre exploitees en salle de classe.     Klondike Solitaire Solvability Mikko Voima BACHELOR’S THESIS April 2021 Degree Programme in Business Information Systems Option of Game Development ABSTRACT Tampereen ammattikorkeakoulu Tampere University of Applied Sciences Degree Programme in Business Information Systems Option of Game Development VOIMA, MIKKO: Klondike Solitaire Solvability Bachelor's thesis 32 pages, of which appendices 1 page June 2021 Klondike solitaire remains one of the most popular single-player card games, but the exact odds of winning were discovered as late as 2019. The objective of this thesis was to study Klondike solitaire solvability from the game design point of view. The purpose of this thesis was to develop a solitaire prototype and use it as a testbed to study the solvability of Klondike. The theoretical section explores the card game literature and the academic studies on the solvability of Klondike solitaire. Furthermore, Klondike solitaire rule variations and the game mechanics are analysed. In the practical section a Klondike game prototype was developed using Unity game engine. A new fast recursive method was developed which can detect 2.24% of random card configurations as unsolvable without simulating any moves. The study indicates that determining the solvability of Klondike is a computationally complex NP-complete problem. Earlier studies proved empirically that approximately 82% of the card configurations are solvable. The method developed in this thesis could detect over 12% of the unsolvable card configurations without making any moves. The method can be used to narrow the search space of brute-force searches and applied to other problems. Analytical research on Klondike solvability is called for because the optimal strategy is still not known.

This version, sometimes called thoughtful solitaire, has all cards revealed to the player, but then follows the usual Klondike rules. A strategy that we establish, using iterated roll- outs, wins about twice as many games on average as an expert human player does. 1 Introduction Though proposed more than fifty years ago [1, 7], the effectiveness of the policy improve- ment algorithm remains a mystery. For discounted or average reward Markov decision problems with n states and two possible actions per state, the tightest known worst-case upper bound in terms of n on the number of iterations taken to find an optimal policy is O(2n/n) [9]. This is also the tightest known upper bound for deterministic Markov de- cision problems. It is surprising, however, that there are no known examples of Markov decision problems with two possible actions per state for which more than n + 2 iterations are required. A more intriguing fact is that even for problems with a large number of states – say, in the millions – an optimal policy is often delivered after only half a dozen or so iterations. In problems where n is enormous – say, a googol – this may appear to be a moot point because each iteration requires Ω(n) compute time. In particular, a policy is represented by a table with one action per state and each iteration improves the policy by updating each entry of this table.

This volume comprises three parts: the first covers the period from my birth in 1874 to the end of my professional career in 1914; the second covers the First World War and the Armistice from mid-1914 to October, 1919; the third, my relations to the making of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. The first part was written at odd times during 1915-1916 when I was occupied with Belgian Relief. At that time I constantly had to journey backwards and forwards from London, crossing the English Channel two score times en route to Holland, Belgium, Germany, and often thence to Switzerland, Paris, and London again. These journeys were filled with hours of waiting. Wartime boats and trains were always late in starting or in arriving. There was also the eternal waiting in hotels for appointments with officials.

Michaelson Alaska Natural Heritage Program Environment and Natural Resources Institute University of Alaska Anchorage 707 A Street Anchorage, Alaska 99501 National Park Service Alaska Region Inventory & Monitoring Program NPS Report : 2nd Edition, December 2004 Cooperative Agreement No. 1443CA991000013 Funding Source: National Park Service, Inventory & Monitoring Program KLONDIKE GOLD RUSH NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK VASCULAR PLANT INVENTORY ABSTRACT In 2002 and 2003 the University of Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Natural Heritage Program (AKNHP), conducted vascular plant field inventories in Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park as part of the Inventory and Monitoring Program of the National Park Service. The primary goal was to document greater than 90% of the vascular plant species expected to occur within the park and significantly improve our understanding of current vascular plant species distributions. The inventory targeted diverse habitat types and poorly sampled areas. The AKNHP visited ten diverse eco-geographic regions and sampled intensively within these regions from mid-June to mid-August, 2002 and early July in 2003. A total of 283 specimens were collected, recorded, pressed, and curated. One hundred seventy four individual taxa are represented, 55 are new records for the park, and an additional ten represent verifications of previously unvouchered reports. The percentage of documented taxa increased from 78% to 86% after the 2002 and 2003 field seasons. A number of finds were range extensions or taxa of conservation concern. Collections were made of the state and globally restricted species: Phyllodoce empetriformis (G4- S1S2 rank) and Eleocharis kamtschatica (G4-S2).

We describe a simple one-person card game, patience sorting. Its analysis leads to a broad circle of ideas linking Young tableaux with the longest increasing subsequence of a random permutation via the Schensted correspon- dence. A recent highlight of this area is the work of Baik-Deift-Johansson which yields limiting probability laws via hard analysis of Toeplitz determi- nants. 1. Introduction This survey paper treats two themes in parallel. One theme is a purely math- ematical question: describe the asymptotic law (probability distribution) of the length of the longest increasing subsequence of a random permutation. This ques- tion has been studied by a variety of increasingly technically sophisticated methods over the last 30 years. We outline three, apparently quite unrelated, methods in sections 2, 3 and 4. The other theme is a card game, patience sorting. This game provides an elementary context in which the longest increasing subsequence arises. More remarkably, it relates in different ways to two of the technical methods which have been used. Some new results concerning other aspects of patience sorting are describedinsection5. 1.1. Patience Sorting. One-person card games are called solitaire games in Amer- ican and patience games in British. We start by describing one particular such game, patience sorting, invented as a practical method of sorting real decks of cards.
