Mackie ’61, for her exceptional contributions to the field of historic textiles from Islamic lands. Louise Mackie received her bachelor of arts in art history from Wells College and with Carol Gaines Ruckle ’61 after graduation enjoyed visiting her Wells professor, Hannelore Glasser, in Florence, Italy, during two enlightening years of traveling, studying and working in Europe and the Middle East. She recently retired as curator of textiles and Islamic art at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio. During her impressive curatorial career of 45 years, Mackie held positions at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, The Textile Museum in Washington, D.C., and taught at the University of Toronto. She was a founding director (in 1987) and past president of the Textile Society of America, which is thriving with over 800 WCA AWA R D members; sat on the Advisory Committee of The Textile Museum; and served on the Conseil de Direction of the Centre International d’Etude des Textiles Anciens (CIETA) CEREMONY INVITATION in Lyon, France.

  • Klondike Solitaire Solvability
Klondike Solitaire Solvability Mikko Voima BACHELOR’S THESIS April 2021 Degree Programme in Business Information Systems Option of Game Development ABSTRACT Tampereen ammattikorkeakoulu Tampere University of Applied Sciences Degree Programme in Business Information Systems Option of Game Development VOIMA, MIKKO: Klondike Solitaire Solvability Bachelor's thesis 32 pages, of which appendices 1 page June 2021 Klondike solitaire remains one of the most popular single-player card games, but the exact odds of winning were discovered as late as 2019. The objective of this thesis was to study Klondike solitaire solvability from the game design point of view. The purpose of this thesis was to develop a solitaire prototype and use it as a testbed to study the solvability of Klondike. The theoretical section explores the card game literature and the academic studies on the solvability of Klondike solitaire. Furthermore, Klondike solitaire rule variations and the game mechanics are analysed. In the practical section a Klondike game prototype was developed using Unity game engine. A new fast recursive method was developed which can detect 2.24% of random card configurations as unsolvable without simulating any moves. The study indicates that determining the solvability of Klondike is a computationally complex NP-complete problem. Earlier studies proved empirically that approximately 82% of the card configurations are solvable. The method developed in this thesis could detect over 12% of the unsolvable card configurations without making any moves. The method can be used to narrow the search space of brute-force searches and applied to other problems. Analytical research on Klondike solvability is called for because the optimal strategy is still not known.

  • Trials and Tribulations: Readings and Misreadings of the Revolutionary Body in French Women Novelists, 1792-1799
Trials and Tribulations: Readings and Misreadings of the Revolutionary Body in French Women Novelists, 1792-1799. The Revolution! An unutterable word. Who can claim to understand clearly and precisely that set of events, alternatively glorious and deplorable, some of them the fruit of genius and daring, or again, of the most respectable integrity, and others born of the most perverse iniquity. Jeanbon Saint-André, Committee of Public Safety One would be hard pressed to find a more confusing period than that of the French Revolution, a time when the body politic tried to integrate and embody two equally powerful but ostensibly oppositional ideologies of the eighteenth century: sensibility and rationalism. The dramatic and tragic disjunction between the two, the one calling on passion, the other dispassion, resulted in a schizophrenic production of contradictory signs, symbols, discourse and actions during the revolutionary period, coming into sharp focus during the Terror, 1793-1794. For the Revolutionaries, it was not a question of one mode opposing the other, but rather they conceived the two modes along a continuum as one led to, and justified, the other. The philosophical, medical, and literary work on materialism and sensationism earlier in the century and in the years leading up to 1789 set the foundations for this connection. Following J. J. Rousseau, the revolutionary’s aim was to embody reason, virtue and sensibility. The violent acts resulting from the sensibility/rationalism dyad, however, showed up the contradictions inherent in connecting the two. The internal conflict within revolutionary discourse, which proclaimed on the one hand love and compassion for one’s fellow man, and cold hard impartial justice on the other, was subject to heated discussion amongst the revolutionaries whose members tried to negotiate the disjunction; for some, such as St.
