Limit Shapes of Bumping Routes in the Robinson-Schensted Correspondence
LIMIT SHAPES OF BUMPING ROUTES IN THE ROBINSON-SCHENSTED CORRESPONDENCE DAN ROMIK AND PIOTR SNIADY´ Abstract. We prove a limit shape theorem describing the as- ymptotic shape of bumping routes when the Robinson-Schensted algorithm is applied to a finite sequence of independent, identi- cally distributed random variables with the uniform distribution U[0; 1] on the unit interval, followed by an insertion of a determin- istic number α. The bumping route converges after scaling, in the limit as the length of the sequence tends to infinity, to an explicit, deterministic curve depending only on α. This extends our previ- ous result on the asymptotic determinism of Robinson-Schensted insertion, and answers a question posed by Moore in 2006. 1. Introduction Let Sn denote the symmetric group of order n. Recall that the Robinson-Schensted correspondence associates with a permuta- (n) tion σ 2 Sn a pair of standard Young tableaux (Pn;Qn) whose com- mon shape λ is a Young diagram of order n. A fruitful area of study concerns asymptotic properties of the Robinson-Schensted shape λ and (n) the tableaux Pn;Qn associated with a random permutation σ sam- pled from the uniform distribution on Sn. The existing results on this subject are too numerous to list here, but some of the important high- lights of the theory are the limit shape result of Logan-Shepp [LS77] and Vershik-Kerov [VK77, VK85], which led to the solution of the so- called Ulam-Hammersley problem on the typical length of a longest increasing subsequence in random permutations; and the celebrated Baik-Deift-Johansson theorem [BDJ99a] and its refinements and vari- ants [BDJ99b, BOO00, Joh00] that tied the behavior of longest increas- ing subsequences in random permutations to the Tracy-Widom distri- bution and other naturally-occurring stochastic processes from random 2010 Mathematics Subject Classification. -
Klondike Solitaire Solvability
Klondike Solitaire Solvability Mikko Voima BACHELOR’S THESIS April 2021 Degree Programme in Business Information Systems Option of Game Development ABSTRACT Tampereen ammattikorkeakoulu Tampere University of Applied Sciences Degree Programme in Business Information Systems Option of Game Development VOIMA, MIKKO: Klondike Solitaire Solvability Bachelor's thesis 32 pages, of which appendices 1 page June 2021 Klondike solitaire remains one of the most popular single-player card games, but the exact odds of winning were discovered as late as 2019. The objective of this thesis was to study Klondike solitaire solvability from the game design point of view. The purpose of this thesis was to develop a solitaire prototype and use it as a testbed to study the solvability of Klondike. The theoretical section explores the card game literature and the academic studies on the solvability of Klondike solitaire. Furthermore, Klondike solitaire rule variations and the game mechanics are analysed. In the practical section a Klondike game prototype was developed using Unity game engine. A new fast recursive method was developed which can detect 2.24% of random card configurations as unsolvable without simulating any moves. The study indicates that determining the solvability of Klondike is a computationally complex NP-complete problem. Earlier studies proved empirically that approximately 82% of the card configurations are solvable. The method developed in this thesis could detect over 12% of the unsolvable card configurations without making any moves. The method can be used to narrow the search space of brute-force searches and applied to other problems. Analytical research on Klondike solvability is called for because the optimal strategy is still not known. -

The lesson can be used in units on western expansion, on late 19th- and early 20th-century commerce, and on urban history. It notes that Skagway (located about 100 miles north of Juneau) was established as a result of an 1897 gold strike which began in the Klondike region of Canada's Yukon Territory, and it points out that even though Skagway's "boomtown" era lasted only briefly, it remains alive in -
Solitaire: Man Versus Machine
Solitaire: Man Versus Machine Xiang Yan∗ Persi Diaconis∗ Paat Rusmevichientong† Benjamin Van Roy∗ ∗Stanford University {xyan,persi.diaconis,bvr}@stanford.edu †Cornell University [email protected] Abstract In this paper, we use the rollout method for policy improvement to an- alyze a version of Klondike solitaire. This version, sometimes called thoughtful solitaire, has all cards revealed to the player, but then follows the usual Klondike rules. A strategy that we establish, using iterated roll- outs, wins about twice as many games on average as an expert human player does. 1 Introduction Though proposed more than fifty years ago [1, 7], the effectiveness of the policy improve- ment algorithm remains a mystery. For discounted or average reward Markov decision problems with n states and two possible actions per state, the tightest known worst-case upper bound in terms of n on the number of iterations taken to find an optimal policy is O(2n/n) [9]. This is also the tightest known upper bound for deterministic Markov de- cision problems. It is surprising, however, that there are no known examples of Markov decision problems with two possible actions per state for which more than n + 2 iterations are required. A more intriguing fact is that even for problems with a large number of states – say, in the millions – an optimal policy is often delivered after only half a dozen or so iterations. In problems where n is enormous – say, a googol – this may appear to be a moot point because each iteration requires Ω(n) compute time. In particular, a policy is represented by a table with one action per state and each iteration improves the policy by updating each entry of this table. -
Jeu De Taquin Dynamics on Infinite Young Tableaux and Second
The Annals of Probability 2015, Vol. 43, No. 2, 682–737 DOI: 10.1214/13-AOP873 c Institute of Mathematical Statistics, 2015 JEU DE TAQUIN DYNAMICS ON INFINITE YOUNG TABLEAUX AND SECOND CLASS PARTICLES By Dan Romik1 and Piotr Sniady´ 2 University of California, Davis, and Polish Academy of Sciences and University of Wroc law We study an infinite version of the “jeu de taquin” sliding game, which can be thought of as a natural measure-preserving transforma- tion on the set of infinite Young tableaux equipped with the Plancherel probability measure. We use methods from representation theory to show that the Robinson–Schensted–Knuth (RSK) algorithm gives an isomorphism between this measure-preserving dynamical system and the one-sided shift dynamics on a sequence of independent and iden- tically distributed random variables distributed uniformly on the unit interval. We also show that the jeu de taquin paths induced by the transformation are asymptotically straight lines emanating from the origin in a random direction whose distribution is computed explic- itly, and show that this result can be interpreted as a statement on the limiting speed of a second-class particle in the Plancherel-TASEP particle system (a variant of the Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclu- sion Process associated with Plancherel growth), in analogy with ear- lier results for second class particles in the ordinary TASEP. 1. For simple games, where the way the game goes depends only upon how the cards fall, your patience might be the only thing you need. There are also patience games where you must plan your strategy and think ahead in order to win. A theme common to all the games is the player must put the cards in a special order — moving, turning and reordering them. -

PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA Fifth Printing, 1951 PREFACE ___________________________________________________________ These memoirs are not a diary but a topical relation of some events and incidents in a roughly chronological order. It has been my habit to keep notes and documents rather than daily entries—for which indeed I have found little time in life. This volume comprises three parts: the first covers the period from my birth in 1874 to the end of my professional career in 1914; the second covers the First World War and the Armistice from mid-1914 to October, 1919; the third, my relations to the making of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. The first part was written at odd times during 1915-1916 when I was occupied with Belgian Relief. At that time I constantly had to journey backwards and forwards from London, crossing the English Channel two score times en route to Holland, Belgium, Germany, and often thence to Switzerland, Paris, and London again. These journeys were filled with hours of waiting. Wartime boats and trains were always late in starting or in arriving. There was also the eternal waiting in hotels for appointments with officials. -

The primary goal was to document greater than 90% of the vascular plant species expected to occur within the park and significantly improve our understanding of current vascular plant species distributions. The inventory targeted diverse habitat types and poorly sampled areas. The AKNHP visited ten diverse eco-geographic regions and sampled intensively within these regions from mid-June to mid-August, 2002 and early July in 2003. A total of 283 specimens were collected, recorded, pressed, and curated. One hundred seventy four individual taxa are represented, 55 are new records for the park, and an additional ten represent verifications of previously unvouchered reports. The percentage of documented taxa increased from 78% to 86% after the 2002 and 2003 field seasons. A number of finds were range extensions or taxa of conservation concern. Collections were made of the state and globally restricted species: Phyllodoce empetriformis (G4- S1S2 rank) and Eleocharis kamtschatica (G4-S2). -
