Le philtre 4/47-Ramène une Iseut mécontente sur sa nef. Elle lui en veut de l’avoir arrachée à son pays, à ses parents pour la donner à un autre, le roi de Cornouailles 4/47-Alors que tout l’équipage, sauf trois personnes, est à terre, boit un philtre d’amour en compagnie d’Iseult. Il avait été préparé par la mère d’Iseut à l’intention de sa fille et du roi Marc. 4/47-Les deux nouveaux amoureux éprouvent les terribles tourments d’une passion impérieuse mais illégitime. Il chasse Tristan sans lui dire pourquoi, bien que Brangien lui ait caché efficacement la liaison. 6/59-Ne pouvant prendre Brangien en défaut, les barons félons font appel au nain Frocin qui, par magie, sut le rendez-vous des amants sous le pin. Il dit au roi de s’y rendre pendant la nuit. 6/59-Protégés par Dieu, les amants détectent la présence du roi et lui servent un mensonge qui le convainc. Le nain Frocin 7/69-Les félons menacent le roi Marc de lui faire la guerre s’il ne chasse pas Tristan et ils lui recommandent de faire appel à nouveau au nain Frocin pour lui tendre un piège. 7/69-Le nain étend de la farine entre le lit de la reine et celui de Tristan. Même si la ruse est connue, Tristan ne peut éviter d’être pris en flagrant délit. Il est capturé et accusé par le roi. Le saut de la chapelle 8/74-Le roi Marc est inflexible: il veut faire périr Tristan et Iseut sur le bûcher, malgré le mécontentement de ses proches et du peuple. 8/74-Délié par Dinas de Lidan, Tristan demande à prier avant de mourir.

The production and reception of Ovidinia flourished, and Ovid’s poems in- creasingly became read as coherent compositions rather than dissected for bits of moral exempla. In particular, the Metamorphoses profoundly affects the literary landscape of late medieval France and England. Allusions to Ovid’s poem reemerge throughout the late Middle Ages at defining moments of poetic self-consciousness, most often through figures of ekphrasis, the use of poetry in order to portray other media of art. After learning warlike and peaceful arts required of noble youth by his tutor, Governal, he sought out his uncle, King Mark, in Tintagel in an attempt to see other lands and seek adventure. Yet, he did so without revealing his identity. With his brevity and prowess, he launched himself to high status with the king. Tristan eventually revealed his royal lineage, but became wounded while fatally injuring Morholt, the brother of the Queen of Ireland. Giving all trust to God, he set out on a boat in faith that he would be sent somewhere to receive healing. Ironically, this journey took him to Ireland, where he received healing. This is where we first meet the barons, who quickly become Tristan’s enemies. Fearful that Tristan would inherit Mark’s riches, they pleaded with the king to find a wife. Begrudgingly, the king agreed to marry the woman who possessed the hair matching that of a strand he received from a swallow. Once again, we find our hero in route to Ireland, as the Irish king offered his daughter, Yseut as reward to any who could kill a dragon which had been reaping havoc on their land.

This task implies a survey of the whole semantic "field", as itwas developed in different epochs and literatures : the concept and the words expressing it had to be brought face to face, and in the words, in turn, the seman tic kernel and the emotional connotations with their variations and fluctuations in time had to be considered. A "Stimmungsgeschichte" of the word Stimmung was necessary. I hope that this historical development will spontaneously, if gradually, emerge from the mosaic of texts to which I wished my running text to be subordinated: the consistency of the texture of verbal and conceptual asso ciations and motifs through the centuries seems to me to be herewith established. "Avez-vous un texte?" was the insistent question which the famous positivist Fustel de Coulanges was wont to address to his pupils when they made a historical statement.     66 arthuriana the 2018 loomises lecture The Evolving Iconography of the Tristan Legend from the Middle Ages to the Present, with Special Emphasis on the Arthurian Revival in British Art joan tasker grimbert In this essay, I explore how the iconography of the legend of Tristan and Iseult evolved through the ages, noting how each epoch favored a specific episode that seemed to emblemize the lovers’ plight. Although I consider various cultural influences, I emphasize the particular works (mostly literary) from which artists, musicians, and filmmakers appear to have drawn their primary inspiration. (JTG) he legend of Tristan and Iseult has had a long and remarkable history.1 TOriginating apparently as an oral tale to which the troubadours allude as early as the eleventh century, it is preserved in fragments of narrative poems in Anglo-Norman, Middle High German, Middle English, and Old Norse dating back to the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. It was transformed decisively in the thirteenth century when it merged with the legend of King Arthur in the French prose Tristan, a work which then spawned variations in Italian and Spanish. The prose Tristan was later preserved in abbreviated form in late fifteenth-century printed editions and—quite differently—in the vast middle section of Sir Thomas Malory’s Morte Darthur. After experiencing a lull in the early modern period, the legend was again revived in the nineteenth century with the appearance of new editions of Malory’s work and inaugural editions of the medieval verse romances, which inspired contemporary poets and artists. In the later decades of that century, Richard Wagner’s opera, Tristan und Isolde, left its powerful imprint on poets, artists, and eventually filmmakers, and, in the early twentieth century, Joseph Bédier’sRoman de Tristan et Iseut likewise influenced primarily book illustrators and filmmakers.
