It’s been a year of both triumph and, unfortunately, tragedy and in this issue we take time out to remember María de Villota, whose passing in October left a deep void not just in motor sport but in all our hearts. María’s bravery following her F1 testing accident and the dedication she displayed afterwards – not only in promoting female involvement in motor sport but also safety on the road and track – will be missed. Elsewhere, it was a year of great success for women competitors and in this edition we look at Lucile Cypriano’s victory in the VW and commission-supported shoot-out for a place in next year’s VW Scirocco R-Cup and reveal how the FIA European Rallycross Championship has become a haven for female racers. In his tenth World Championship finale in a row, the defending rallycross World Champion missed yet another podium finish by 0.4 seconds. In the overall standings, the Swede still holds second behind compatriot Johan Kristoffersson. In the teams’ classification EKS is third at the half-way stage of the season. Ekström made a flying start around the rollercoaster track in Norway. Despite torrential rain, the Swede coped the best with the slippery track at the wheel of his Audi S1 EKS RX quattro, and led the overall classification after the first day. “I was a little surprised that we were so fast in the wet, but that was quattro weather,” joked Ekström after the final. “In the dry conditions on Sunday, we struggled again to match the pace of the competition. In the final we lost crucial ground right at the start. This was our own mistake and this ultimately cost us the podium finish.” Although Ekström leaves Norway without a trophy, he still scored 23 important points for the overall standings. After six of twelve rounds, the World Champion is eight points behind the leading VW driver Johan Kristoffersson. -

Bien que le début d’année 2008 sem- blait être en hausse, les 6 derniers mois de l’année ont semble-t-il eu raison du bilan du groupe qui enregistre un déficit de 343 millions d’euros pour un chiffre d’affaire de 54,3 milliards d’euros (-7,4%). Depuis le début de l’année, le marché Français est toujours en net recul avec un repli de 12,9% (-8,6% à nombre de jours ouvrables comparables) par rapport à Jan- vier, Février 2008. -

At the ninth round in Lohéac, the reigning World Champion finished third – the first podium result since his victory in Hockenheim last May. In front of 75,000 spectators, the Swede was only beaten in the final by his countryman Johan Kristoffersson and the French local matador Sébastien Loeb. In the overall standings, Ekström is third behind Kristoffersson and his team mate Petter Solberg – also like EKS in the team classification. Following heavy rain, the final race in Brittany became a mud festival featuring many overtaking moves. “Saturday sun and Sunday rather more swimming and sliding, a varied weekend,” confirmed Ekström. “I’m actually quite satisfied with my third place, but I’m a little annoyed because we weren’t so far from the front. In the dry and in the rain we were just missing a tiny bit, but we can certainly build on the performance.” In Lohéac, Ekström’s team mates Reinis Nitišs and Toomas Heikkinen once again made the semi- final races for the twelve fastest drivers, but drew the short straw at this stage. “After contact with Andreas Bakkerud my wipers stopped working, from there on I was running blind,” summarized Nitišs and added: “I’m disappointed with the result because it doesn’t show our real performance.” Heikkinen missed the final after a collision with Ken Block. -

The development of promising talented drivers enjoys a long tradition at BMW Motorsport. In 2014 a new multi-level GT junior concept had been introduced: the BMW Motorsport Junior Programme. This realignment saw BMW Motorsport shift its development of young drivers back to the GT and touring car sector. In Formula racing the concept bore fruit for many years in Formula BMW and the Formula BMW Talent Cup and kick-started the racing career of many successful drivers like Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg and Nico Hülkenberg. The focus is on GT and touring car drivers who already have some racing experience. Outings in the BMW M235i Racing are an integral part of the comprehensive training programme. As well as race starts and test drives, intensive theory courses dealing with fitness and PR are planned, as are mental and simulator training. The potential candidates for this year’s class were put to the test in a shootout in the BMW M235i Racing in Dijon on 10th/11th March. A decision as to which of the young drivers showed the most potential is made by a jury of experts, headed by BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. BMW works driver Dirk Adorf will act as a mentor for the junior programme. At the end of the year, the most successful BMW Motorsport Junior of the season will be given the opportunity to continue his training for a second year in a higher racing category. -

Peugeot 3008 DKR: nuovi artigli per la Dakar 2017 Per sfoggiare immagine e muscoli da rally-raid, il team sportivo del Leone ha preparato quest’anno la nuova Peugeot 3008 DKR 2017. La “belva” da competizione è una visione estrema del nuovo SUV 3008 (il suo lancio commerciale è previsto dopo il Salone di Parigi). L’indole rabbiosa ad alte prestazioni della 3008 DKR è assai evidente e allo stesso tempo riesce a mantenere una certa eleganza. Anche per la scelta minimalista delle decorazioni: nero, grigio e qualche tocco di rosso esaltano l’aspetto techno, soprattutto nella vista di 3/4 posteriore. Ad ogni modo, spiccano la cellula nera “Black Diamond” e le varie prese d’aria. Dal padiglione la modanatura mette in risalto la linea di cintura e i fianchi possenti con i pneumatici All-Terrain T/A della BFGoodrich. Ai lati trovano posto, visibili, anche le ruote di scorta, come ben visibile è la firma della Red Bull, sponsor insieme a Total. Un’evoluzione, quella della 3008, artisticamente rappresentata dalla breve “spray story” del video. Peugeot 3008 DKR: nuovi artigli per la Dakar 2017 Quanto alla tecnica, Peugeot Sport si è concentrata parecchio sulle sospensioni (geometria e ammortizzatori), ovviamente per adattare il loro comportamento a sollecitazioni impietose, quindi sul raffreddamento e sul contenimento del peso della vettura, a bilanciare la presenza dei rinforzi nonché all’utilizzo di un impianto di climatizzazione, che sarà assai apprezzato dagli equipaggi. Un grande protagonista è il motore e la sua preparazione, innanzitutto per gli adattamenti richiesti dal nuovo regolamento FIA, che per i veicoli a 2 ruote motrici motorizzati Diesel riduce il diametro della flangia di strozzatura dell’aria da 39 a 38 mm, il che costa una perdita di circa 20 cavalli. -

Clermont-Ferrand (France), October 31, 2014 Renault Sport Technologies and Michelin evaluating 17- and 18-inch tyres Renault Sport Technologies and Michelin share the same vision that motorsport permits innovative technologies to be fostered in a competitive environment with a view to achieving closer ties with the technologies that are available to the motoring public. Accordingly, the two partners are currently exploring the feasibility of switching to 18- and 17-inch tyres for the Formula Renault 3.5 Formula Renault 2.0 championships respectively from 2016. An initial test session based on Formula Renault 3.5 cars was carried out at Valencia, Spain, followed by a second featuring Formula Renault 2.0 cars at Barcelona, again in Spain. Given the positive results achieved at these tests, Renault Sport Technologies and Michelin are pleased to announce their intention to pursue this joint-development programme, and further sessions are planned over the months ahead. Since January, the collaboration between Renault Sport Technologies and Michelin has enabled the two companies to collect a significant amount of data after completing several hundred kilometres in testing. The two entities are carefully studying the results of this groundwork in order to obtain a thorough understanding of the repercussions any changes in tyre dimensions might have for the drivers, as well as in terms of grip and suspension performance. As far as factors such as top speed, road holding, tyre wear and the wear of other components are concerned, the early conclusions are positive. Despite requiring a certain number of small modifications, the cars feature a more modern look and benefit from enhanced cornering performance.
