Managing the Boundaries of Taste: Culture, Valuation, and Computational Social Science* Ryan Light University of Oregon Colin Odden Ohio State University Ohio Colleges of Medicine This is a pre-copyedited, author-produced version of an article accepted for publication in Social Forces following peer review. The authors thank James Moody, Jill Ann Harrison, Matthew Norton, Brandon Stewart, Achim Edelmann, Clare Rosenfeld Evans, Jordan Besek, and Brian Ott for their helpful comments on earlier drafts of this paper. Managing the Boundaries of Taste: Culture, Valuation, and Computational Social Science Abstract The proliferation of cultural objects, such as music, books, film and websites, has created a new problem: How do consumers determine the value of cultural objects in an age of information glut? Crowd-sourcing – paralleling word-of-mouth recommendations – has taken center stage, yet expert opinion has also assumed renewed importance. Prior work on the valuation of artworks and other cultural artifacts identifies ways critics establish and maintain classificatory boundaries, such as genre. We extend this research by offering a theoretical approach emphasizing the dynamics of critics’ valuation and classification. Empirically, this analysis turns to Pitchfork.com, an influential music review website, to examine the relationship between classification and valuation. Using topic models of fourteen years of Pitchfork.com album reviews (n=14,495), we model the dynamics of valuation through genre and additional factors predictive of positive reviews and cultural consecration. We use gold record awards to study the relationship between valuation processes and commercial outcomes.

Convinced that Cám- pora’s triumph had been propelled by young people’s zeal—as expressed in their increasing affiliation with the Juventud Peronista (Peronist Youth, or JP), an organization linked to the Montoneros—he convened a rock festival, at which the most prominent bands and singers of what journalists had begun to dub rock nacional went onstage. Among them were La Pesada del Rock- ’n’Roll, the duo Sui Géneris, and Luis Alberto Spinetta with Pescado Rabioso. In spite of the rain, 20,000 people attended the “Festival of Liberation,” mostly “muchachos from every working- and middle-class corner of Buenos Aires,” as one journalist depicted them, also noting that while the JP tried to raise chants from the audience, the “boys” acted as if they were “untouched by the political overtones of the festival.”1 Rather atypical, this event was nonetheless significant.

  • When James Ford and Jas Shaw Met at Manchester University in the Late 1990S, They Never Imagined They'd End up Creating a Human Synthesiser
When James Ford and Jas Shaw met at Manchester University in the late 1990s, they never imagined they'd end up creating a human synthesiser. But in their very earliest musical experiments together, something was set in motion which would lead to one of the most unusual careers in British music: one which has seen their creative mission transform again and again, inventing entirely new formats for music-making along the way. So perhaps the weaving of rich layers of human vocal tonalities sung by The Deep Throat Choir into the techno framework of their fifth studio album Murmurations isn't quite such an unexpected turn of events. In fact, they've been connecting the human voice with electronic sound since they first founded the band Simian with Simon Lord and Alex McNaughten. Simian was, in Jas's words, about “trying to show you could make band music with songs and harmonies but be into Autechre too". Named after "Simeon", the home-made early synth rig of early electronic experimentalists The Silver Apples, the band combined Crosby, Stills & Nash harmonies with hypnotic Krautrock rhythms, cosmic analogue synthesiser swooshes and an unmistakeable clubber's sense of groove - and somehow in the middle of all that managed to find something extraordinarily accessible. They were signed to a major label subsidiary in 2000, and made two albums that stand up in their own right now. But, Jas continues, it was "just at the moment the world was into the Strokes and White Stripes and straight-ahead rock music," and their rich, baroque tapestries of song and sound didn't reach the audience their ambition and beauty deserved.

How can we understand the indie phenomenon in the history of juvenile music related to Argentine rock bands? What variables should we take into consideration to comprehend indie since its logic differs from the one established by the identitarian appropriation of music genres? In order to answer these questions, we describe indie music in Buenos Aires and show its evolution.

Reinterpreting the Global, Rearticulating the Local: Nueva Música Colombiana, Networks, Circulation, and Affect Simón Calle Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Simón Calle All rights reserved ABSTRACT Reinterpreting the Global, Rearticulating the Local: Nueva Música Colombiana, Networks, Circulation, and Affect Simón Calle This dissertation analyses identity formation through music among contemporary Colombian musicians. The work focuses on the emergence of musical fusions in Bogotá, which participant musicians and Colombian media have called “nueva música Colombiana” (new Colombian music). The term describes the work of bands that assimilate and transform North-American music genres such as jazz, rock, and hip-hop, and blend them with music historically associated with Afro-Colombian communities such as cumbia and currulao, to produce several popular and experimental musical styles. In the last decade, these new fusions have begun circulating outside Bogotá, becoming the distinctive sound of young Colombia domestically and internationally.
