Pa los cuatro primeros pro- blemes ufiértense dellos paralelos n’otres llingües romances que nos amuesen que los datos del asturlleonés nun son tan problemáticos como a primer vista pudiere paecer. Pal quintu problema recuéyese la hipótesis de Carmen Pensado, pa quien nun hubo diptongación de /ɛ/ y /ɔ/ en contautu con yod y wau. A la lluz de los datos conclúise que nun paez posible determinar si l’asturlleonés medieval prefe- ría la diptongación de /ɛ/ y /ɔ/ o la so confusión con /e/ y /o/. La situación que paez reconstruise ye la d’una variación interna ente dambos resultados dientro del dominiu asturlleonés. Pallabres clave: Diptongación, asturlleonés, clasificación de llingües. ABSTRACT: This paper review five problems in Asturleonese diphthongization: 1) the abundance of forms without diphthong in ancient texts; 2) the examples with monophthong in modern dialects; 3) the presence of antietymological diphthongs; 4) the diphthongization of the conjunction ET and the verb SUM; 5) the apparent asymmetry in the evolution of /ɛj/ and /ɔj/. Some parallels in other Romance languages are adduced for the first four issues, which show that Asturleonese data are not as problematic as it would seem at first sight. For the fifth problem the author adheres to Carmen Pensado’s hypothesis that there was no diphthongization of /ɛ/ and /ɔ/ in contact with ‘yod’ and ‘wau’. The analysis of these controversial data leads the author to the conclusion that it seems impossible to determine if medieval Leonese preferred diphthongization of /ɛ/ and /ɔ/ or confusion with /e/ and /o/.
