The B ible is Go d ’ s L ove L etter to every Christian . It is therefore the C hristian ’ s business to “ search o ut ” i ts teachings , or to p ut it even more “ — literally Ransack th e Scriptures .

( Acts Jn . As we wo uld study every wor d and medi tate upon every paragraph o f a love letter fro m one near to our hearts , th at we mi ght gather every expres sion o f love an d every tho ught for “ ” o ur good , so we sh o uld explore the Word of Go d that we may grow in grace and in th e knowledge of

Jesus Christ , o ur Divine L over . Yet the B ible is a great feast into which tho usands never venture for themselves . Too many p eople want their

B ible study in capsules , sugared to taste and made to slip down easily , requirin g no chewing . No Christian can be what Go d wants him to be on capsule fo o d . Th e B ible is the most inspiring and fascinating book in all th e world if yo u go at it with th e help o f the H oly Spirit . Yo u can brin g it down to every experience o f life , and yo u o ught to bring yo ur experiences up to it . The B ook yo u will want for yo ur pillow when yo u are dying , as

Joseph Cook has said , is the B ook yo u o ught to study while you are living . I ofier h ere some general r ules for B ible study , grouped under th e “ ” - - - - - letters s e a r c h . T E MA T I A L L Y 2 Ti m S C . “ Study to shew thyself

approve d unto God , a workman that needeth not to be ashame d ; ” rightly dividing the Word o f Truth . A mechanic wo uld b e a failure if not familiar with his tools . A Christian , not familiar with th e Word o f Go d ,

- is a wall fl ow er in the ch urch . Systemati c stu dy is the great need . The grassh opper metho d o f B ible study ( j umping here an d r there ) gets n ow he e . Were yo u studying for a professional career , yo u wo uld not op en your book to day at Chapter 6 an d read a bit ; to morrow hastily read a few par a gr a p h s o f the first chapter and next read the index . Yo u woul d rea d systematically and serio usly to get ’ the author s thought . B e j ust as intelligent in reading the B ible .

A R N E ST LY P s a . “ Open mine eyes that I may behold wondrous things o ut o f thy L aw . Yo u could n ot get the most fro m an art gallery with o ut f one to lead an d explain . M uch o interest wo ul d be misse d by travel ing alone . The B ible is a p icture gallery o f vast extent . To enj oy it and find its richest treasures a guide is needed to enlighten o ur u n der stan din g .

Ju o . says , The Holy Spirit shall glorify me , for He shall take o f the things o f mine an d sh ow it ” unto yo u . L et the Spirit of God reveal . Take the things hard to m understan d to Hi , and o n bended knee , with B ible open before yo u , h see what He will give yo u . If t e

4 heart is honest in the prayer , and yo u are willing to walk in the light H as e reveals it , m arvelo us things will break in upon yo ur so ul .

NXI OU SL Y P s a “ Make me to understan d the

way o f thy precepts , so SHAL L I TAL K OF T HY WONDROUS ” WORKS . If yo u are a Christian , yo u are going to meet the assaults o f the devil ’ s agents who seek to undermine the faith . The Word o f Go d is th e weap on that p uts the enemy to silence . If Jesus used it

( Matt . 4 ) and defeate d Satan in His face to face enco unter , how m uch more sh oul d we use it in dealing with his agents . The B ible does no t nee d o ur de tense . It needs o ur study . It will defend itself . It is its own com mentary Seek the answers to all difficulties not fro m h uman reason m ’ ings , b ut anxio usly fro Go d s

Word . It is not what men think but what Go d ’ s Word says that co unts .

E G U LA R L Y P s a 3 , His delight is in the law of the L ord an d in His l aw d otn he meditate day an d night . And he shall be like a tree planted by riv ers o f water th at bringeth forth his fruit in his season . His leaf also shall not wither and whatso ever he ” doeth shall prosper . The man who DAIL Y meditates on the Word bears the fruit o f p atience in the time o f su fier in g ; faith in the sea son of trial ; a h o ly j oy in seasons o f 5 prosperity— h e is never voi d of fruit .

What h e does prospers . There is a blessing concealed in every cross , loss or sorrow that comes his way and he never fails to find it . He is an evergreen tree . The sign o f spiritual life is always with him . Yo u don ’ t try to eat enough on M onday morning to last yo u for the week . If yo u did , yo u wo uld be in a most sickly condition at th e en d o f the week . Th ose who get mixed up in th e prevalent false doctrines , are those wh o get sickly fro m ir regular feeding on th e Word . B e regular . Put it first on your pro gram . L et n othing interfere .

A R E F U LL Y 2 Tim . 1 7 , “ A ll Scripture is given by in spiration o f Go d an d is p r ofit able for do ctrine , for reproof , for correction , for instruction in right eou sn ess. That the man o f Go d may b e perfect , thoroughly fur ” n ish ed unto all go o d works . Then d o not b e skimming over passages in it that d o not at first glance seem to yield foo d for thought . It is n ot a question o f how ma ny times yo u have been through the

B ible , but how many times the

B ible has b een through you . If you are looking for chestnuts , and the leaves up on th e ground seem to con ceal them , yo u will take a stick and poke over an d over again in the same spot . Yo u are surprised that you find s o many of th e brown nuts in the spots where yo u had at first thought there were none . L ikewise

6 yo u will be ama zed at what one seem in gly unimportant verse will yield when yo u crack it open .

— U MB L Y Ju o . If any man will do His will he shall ” know o f the teaching . U n less we study the B ible wholly p ur posed to yield o ur lives to the truth

Go d reveals , His revelations will cease and the B ook will become dry . It does not do to evade the truth that Go d shows us . Go d cannot give His treasures to disobedient h earts .

Chris t . Each believer has an exalte d posi tion through grace and i s to have a walk

in accordance with that position . ’ — P hilip p ia n s Christ i s the believer s life , pattern , obj ect , and strength . C o l o s sia n s— The Godhead was incarnate in

J S U S Christ , in whom the believer is com pIete . — I . Th e s sa l o nia n s The coming of the Lord e Jesus is imminent . The hope of Hi s r turn i s the great hope and inspiration and comfort of the true Christian . — II . Th essa l on ia n s The Christian is to wait , watch and work for the coming of the Lord Je sus , when He will be glorified in His saints and His saints shall be eter nally satisfied in Him . — 1 . Tim o thy God would have the minister and the Chri stian know “ how they should behave in the house of God” and how “ to hol d the my s tery of the faith in a‘ pure ” conscience . — II . Timo thy The Christian must be loyal to Christ and to the truth , enduring as a good soldier against all persecution , and in the midst of growing apostasie s . 21, ’ Titu s— Christ s ministers should follow the divine order as revealed in the Epistle s, for the conduct of the Church . P hilemon - Awise and good minis ter s of Je sus Chris t will have great and tender care of young convert s to encourage and hearten them , and get them received int o the fellowship of the saints . There is a spiritual brotherhood between all true be liev er s, however distinguished as to their

‘ station of life , and we should therefore seek to strengthen and help those who have been newly united to the Christian family .

Hebr ew s— The cure for faint - heartedne ss toward the Gospel i s a right conception of the glory and work of our Great High

— I I . P eter The believer must be pure and loyal in the day s of corruption and apos tasy , and has tening the coming of Christ by every means .

— I . J o h n Salvation through our Lord Jesu s

Christ brings a life of fellowship with God, joyfulne s s , victory , s afety and cer ta1n ty .

— II . J oh n The tes t of our love to God is universal obedience to Him , and we have need to maintain this love , for there are many destroyers of it in the world— those who subvert the faith , denying the person or the work of J esus Christ . Let such men not be entertained as ministers of

Christ , nor given support in any way .

— 111. Joh n Ministers of Christ should abound in , and jo y in hospitality toward fellow helpers in the Lord , and should be ware o f the peril of a domineering leader ship which s tands in the way of bles sing to the people of God .

Jude— B elievers mus t be on their u ar d les t they be robbed of any es sentia ar ticle of Christian faith by the cunning craftines s or plausible pretenses of ungodly men who pos e a s teachers and lie in wait to deceive . Our duty in the pres ence of the apostasy is to earnes tly contend for to the faith , trusting be kept from s tumbling by w alk mg in the perpetual consciousne s s ’ of God s love through Christ , looking to ward the day when we shall be presented before Him with exceeding joy . 22

A careful study o f the B ible will show seven great j udgments mapped o ut fo r h uman history , some of which have already fallen , others being yet future . Seven ti mes man h as or will start a new perio d u n der favorable conditions , according to th e mercy of Go d , but each time , h e is seen to strive to become inde ’ p endent of Go d s truth , an d j udg ’ ment fro m Go d s hand is necessary . The trial of th e Serpent r uns over every Garden o f E den man has made . E ach dispensation is a new

‘ test o f , the natural man , and each one proves him a failure apart fro m dependence on God . Five o f these unequal periods are past ; the sixth is now in pro gress ; the seventh and last is j ust before us .

Th e Seven Per iods o f Time

— 1. A g e o f Inn oc en c e From Adam (Gen . to expulsion from Eden a s re sult of the fall . The j udgment that fell as a r e ’ sult of Adam s disregard of the r esp o n sibilit in G en . 2 y placed upon him , is seen . and 3 .

2. A ge o f C o nsci ence years) . From the expulsion to the fl ood . Having received knowledge of good and evil , the race came under this measure of responsibility to “ do Y good and e schew evil . et eventually all fl e sh corrupted His way and God closed the period with the fl ood . (Gen . to

12, 23 , etc . )

3 h r i . A g e o f A ut o ty years) Flood i to confusion of tongues and d sp er s1o n . The race again started with eight persons en trusted by God with the government . A ain we see the attempt to become in dep en ent of God on the Plains of Shina r. and the vis iting of the judgment . ( Gen . 2 ;

4 A f P r mise . ge o o y ears) . From dis . 1 pers on to Egyptian bondage . God entered 1 1 h 1 nto covenant w t one man , Abram , giv n g 25 promises conditional upon obedience . The se were all eventually violated and the chosen people are turned over to bondage to the

- cruel Egyptians . (Gen . 3 through Exod .

’ 5 . A g e of La w years) . From Israel s regathering to the tragedy of the Cros s . The cho sen people were redeemed out of the hand of the oppre s sor and the Law° was given to Mo se s for them . Their his tory from this point show s their persistent violation of these commands and eventually they are driven into the dispersion which 19 2 1n - 1 s till continues . (Exod . ; K gs 8 - 11 and ; Rom . Gal .

6 . A ge o f G r a ce y ears) . From s ac r ificial death of the Lord J esus to the translation of the church . Faith in Chris t is the condition of salvation to all . (John The predicted clos e of this age i s an unbelieving world , and ch u rch members , who , while they may live morally , deny the

Word of God ; in fact , a general apostasy . 1 - 1 We see the close in Thes s . 7. Then follows the Great Tribulation ( seven years - 22 Matt . ; Dan . Jer . At its close the Lord with His church come s i n power and great glory to set up His kingdom on earth . i 7. Mill enn al A ge years) . From Chris t ’ s return in glory to J udgment of the Great White Throne . This i s the thou sand y ear period predicted during which

Chris t will rule over restored Israel , which has become the central nation of the earth .

Satan is bound during this time , but at “ ” its close i s loosed for a little season , gathering many to battle agains t Christ , “ but being defeated by the fir e which came ” down from Heaven . After the r esu r r ec tion of the wicke d dead for j udgment , we are to have the eternal state , the new heavens and new earth . T HE BI BLE

How We Know the B ible is a Divine Record : For two reasons th e Christian sho uld be familiar with some of th e best arguments in support o f the fact that the B ible is a divine record . 1 . The firm establish ment of his own faith . 2 . For the p urpose o f refuting the arguments o f skeptics . By “ inspiration o f the Scriptures is not meant that every act recorded in the B ible is an inspired act , b ut that the record in th e original , is a correct record fro m start to finish , for the reason that th e writers were “ ” borne along by the Holy Ghost . 1 . A M a keu p Th a t Is Myster i ou s . E verywher e in the universe we rea d th at God has a ma th ema tica l min d . Study th e stars and yo u will find many in gro ups of seven . In the

S phere of light , there are seven col ors . In th e sphere o f m usic ther e are seven whole tones in the scale . In the sphere o f time th ere are seven days in the week . In the sphere o f birth o f animals and fowls , seven is seen in many ways : in the hatching

27 o f eggs ( hen sits three sevens , pigeon two sevens after the eggs are laid , th e hatchin g o f fi sh ova In th e sphere o f human life , seven i s written everywhere : the bo dy is co m p l etely renewed every seven years ; w the seventh , fo urteenth an d t enty first days are th e critical days in dis eases . In fact , wh erever we turn we

find seven in nature . T h e ma th ematic s o f th e B ibl e a t tr act a tten tion . Over 3 0 0 times the number seven is on th e surface , an d it is always significant , indicating “ p erfection or completion . It is the perfect n umber . These sevens keep co min g to light . Great doctrines will naturally divide under seven p oints ; divine conclu sions will co me under seven state ments ; prophetic times will fall into perio ds o f sevens . No h uman foresight could have ar ranged this . I t only comes o ut with deep stu dy .

C onclusion : — The Go d who wrote the p erfect number seven all over th e u niverse , must be the Go d who inspired the writers o f Scripture .

Composed o f many separate bo oks ; written by m any men who lived in many countries ; in many centuries ° engaged in many walks o f life in the midst of m any different circum stances ; spread over 1 5 0 0 years in preparation — how shall we acco unt for th e marvelous UNITY o f the Scriptures as they are assembled ?

28 Go d ’ s plan o f redemption by the bloo d runs throu gh every bo ok . With o ut any one o f th ese books the B ible would be incomplete . Some allege to find discrepancies in the Bible , but always under care n ful study , these apparent co tr a dic tions vanish and perfect unity r e mains .

- - Conclusion : A great master mind , that of God Himself must h ave been back o f the B ible , inspiring each

Writer .

3 . A D epth Th a t I s M a tchle ss .

’ Man s books are soon exh austed and tossed aside , for th e reason th at when the human mind has possessed their contents they are no longer ’ needed . Man s bo oks are ever chang

It is sai d that o ut o f every 1 0 0 0 p ublications 6 0 0 never pay the cost o f printing ; 2 0 0 j ust pay , 1 0 0 yield slight profit ; fewer yet are profitable . Six h undred and fi fty books o ut o f 1 0 0 0 are forgotten within a year ; 1 5 0 more in three years ; less than 5 0 ’ o ut of 1 0 0 0 survive 7 years publicity . Out o f over p ublications o f th e seventeenth century only about 6 0 are known to have been main in ta ed and reprinted . Most libraries are cemeteries o f ’ dead books , because man s writings are so soon exhausted an d because their statements so soon go o ut of date or are found to be erroneo us . How is it with the B ible ? A life x time o f study cannot e haust it . Gen er a tion s of men giving their time .to it cannot get to the botto m o f its

29 Wisdo m . Th o usands o f volumes are written yearly in comment on B ible themes . Tho usands of volumes are written yearly in criticism o f the

Its promises are still being tested . Its proph ecies are still co min g to pass . No changes have ever been necessary in it

Demons and men have empl oyed everything to p ut th e B ible o ut o f commission , an d never with s uch or gan ized force as th e present day . The infidel Voltaire said that it took 1 2 men to start Christianity , b ut th at one ( himself ) wo ul d destroy it . The very room where h e wrote after Ward fell into‘ the hands o f the For eigh B ible Society an d was store d full o f B ibles . Th e very desk on which Ingersoll wrote much o f his infidel literature , fell into th e hands o f a great B ible student wh o has sent Christian literature thro ugh o ut the earth .
