Vol. 73 June 2020 (5780) No. 10 THE RABBI’S COLUMN When I was a student at Hebrew Union College, I took a few classes with Worship Services and Other Rabbi Nancy Wiener. She once gave us an interesting assignment: we were Temple Events asked to write up what we did to recharge our batteries, what each student did when feeling stressed. Of course, she didn’t really care what we did, At this time, all services and only that we should know what we could do when we, inevitably, needed events at Riverdale Temple, to recover from the rigors of life. Most of my strings were original, please email administrator@ and this autoharp may have been made anytime between the 1920s and riverdaletemple.org. 1950s. I usually have time only to replace one or two strings at once, but I can’t tell you how satisfying it is to see the tarnished, old strings gradually replaced by the gleaming new ones. It is not hard to figure out the source of my satisfaction. When the world seems chaotic and out of control, it is soothing to the soul to slowly, methodically, put even a small part of it back into order. In fact, this is true with many things we do in life, and it is true not only during a pandemic. There are many small things we do, for ourselves or others, that are deeply satisfying because we are fixing the world. It may only be in the smallest way, but it is nonetheless a step in the right direction. Annual Congregational Meeting The Hebrew phrase tikkun olam, which means “fixing the world,” first made its appearance in the Talmud. There it referred to rabbinic decrees Sunday, June 21 that solved problems caused by biblical commandments. One example often given is the prozbul. Because of the commandment to forgive loans in 10:00 a.m. via Zoom the shmita year, people would often refuse to lend at all as that shmita year approached. Hillel established the prozbul, a document that would assign the debt to the court, making it enforceable even in the shmita year. Torah Musings Digests July through October, 2014 as published on www.TorahMusings.com Unedited Introduction Started as the Hirhurim blog in 2004, Torah Musings relaunched in August 2013 as an online periodical focusing on multiple areas of interest, including: Textual Studies – halakhah (Jewish law),hashkafah (Jewish thought), history and parshanut (biblical commentary) that is clear, interesting, valuable to experienced students but understandable to those with limited Jewish education; News Stories and Commentary – thoughtful responses based on Jewish texts and traditions to issues of the day; Dialogue – differing views within the Orthodox camp, discussing with post and counter-post or in the responses. In July 2014, the website began sending weekly digests in PDF format. This booklet contains a collection of these weekly digests from July through October 2014, unrevised and in the same format originally sent. Currently, these PDF files flow automatically and sometimes misinterpret formatting commands. Therefore, there are occasional stray sentences that should be ignored. Please note that authorship of each essay is clear on the website but not always in the weekly digest. Unless otherwise indicated, assume that I wrote an essay. Many people contributed to this project. The editorial committee for the first year consisted of R. Micha Berger, R. Basil Herring and R. Moshe Schapiro, the last two continuing into the second year. These three scholars devoted many hours to improving and maintaining the website’s standards. I thank them for their hard work. During the period of this collection, Efraim Vaynman and David Roth served as editorial interns. I thank them both for their hard work.

The Holy Sacrifice Of The Mass Part III How Christ Said The First Mass Fr. James L. Meagher, D.D. 1906 How The Heavenly Mysteries Of The Mass Were Unveiled In The Temple Leaving not the supernal glories He had with the Father and the Holy Spirit before the world was, the Eternal Son was made man, suffered death to redeem us, then with our nature united to the Divinity, He went back into the spirit world unseen, where He ever offers sacrifices from our altars. Day by day, at every Mass, He returns from these eternal, boundless, spaceless, timeless realms, hides His body, soul, and Divinity under forms of bread and wine, is sacrificed in Eucharistic offering, in Communion feeds our souls, and then enters again His eternal sanctuary. Thus every Mass is like a renewal of the Incarnation and an entry into heaven. Communion is an image of God made man in the Person of the Divine Son united to each soul who receives Him, and the feasts of the Incarnation and birth of Christ intermingle with feasts of the Eucharist in all Church Liturgies. Every year the Hebrews held a most holy and mysterious Temple rite, foretelling Christ's death and His entry into heaven at His Ascension and after every Mass. God himself told Moses how to establish the ceremonies of this the Day of Atonement, so celebrated in Jewish writings. But only thirty-four verses are all we have in the Old Testament relating to this great day (Levit xvi.). The ancient world has vanished, the priesthood ceased centuries ago, and not a stone remains on a stone of the Temple.
