Everything You Always Wanted to Ask about Your Faith but were Afraid to Ask Contributed by Fr. Rey Sarmiento

Question:

“Doesn’t the Trinity mean there are three gods?” Answer: The answer is no. Trinity means there are three persons in ONE God; yet, each of the divine persons is distinct from the other in relationship of each to the other (CCC, par. 252). The Father is not the Son, nor is He the Holy Spirit. Likewise, the Son is not the Father, nor is the Holy Spirit, in the same way that the Holy Spirit is not the Son, nor is the Father. However, they are all united in one Godhead (CCC, par. 253). All the three persons possess the same divine nature; none of them is subordinate to each other. Each of them is “God whole and entire” (CCC, par. 253). The Church had to borrow some terms from the discipline of phi- losophy to explain the Trinity: Jesus, who is God the Son, is homoousious with the Father. Ok, what is that strange, fancy word, homoousious? Homoousious is a Greek word used to explain that Jesus is “of the same essence” of the Father, not similar, but of the same essence, “one in being” with the Father. Once we say that the Father greater than the Son, or the Son is greater than the Holy Spirit, then we will have a breakdown in our creed: “I believe in one God”. The breakdown will result in having three Gods competing with each other in prominence. Now, is this something that the Church invented? No. In John 14:9, Jesus himself says, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father”. In John 14:11, Jesus further says, “I am in the Father, and the Father is in me”. What these two verses clearly state is that wherever Jesus is, the Father is there as well, even if they remain distinct persons. The same is likewise true in the case of the Holy Spirit.
