The feeding habit of animals depend on the the teeth, shape of mouth and jaw of the animals and the kind of food they eat. Gnawing- Animals like squirrel, rat and rabbit have sharp front teeth both in upper and lower jaw to cut the nuts, seeds or fruits. They keep biting or nibbling the food with their sharp teeth this way of eating is called gnawing. Chewing the cud- Animals like cow, buffalo and goat graze the grass. They swallow the food without chewing it. After sometime they bring this food back into their mouth and keep chewing it for hours. This is called chewing the cud. Such animals are called ruminants. Sucking- Some insects like mosquitoes, butterflies and honey- bees suck their food. These insects have long, pointed sucking tubes. Swallowing - Animals like snake do not chew their food.
