Since there is only one extant piece of choral music by him, he is often overlooked, but was enormously important, and influenced Tallis, Byrd, and many other composers. Blind from childhood, he quickly rose to prominence as a performer and was the first major Iberian keyboard composer (as well as one of the first in all of Europe). He may have been educated at the Palencia Cathedral by the organist García de Baeza. At the time, the coun- try was slowly entering its Golden Age: on 14 March 1516 Charles V was proclaimed King of Castile and of Aragon jointly with his mother, the first time the crowns of Castile and Aragon were united under the same king. In 1538 Cabezón was made músico de la cámara (chamber musician) to Charles, who as a child was educated in music by the noted organist Henry Bredemers. After Isabel- la’s death in 1539, Cabezón was appointed music teacher to her children: Prince Felipe and his sisters Maria and Joan (Maria would later become the most important patron of composer Tomás Luis de Victoria). This piece, entitled Fuga a cuatro, is a double canon, with the two themes mirrored and refracted in all four parts: a very advanced theoretical piece for the time. The Magnificat sung at the 7:00 PM Mass and Vespers is by Francesco Soriano (1548-1621). He studied at the Basilica di San Gio- vanni in Laterano in Rome with several people including Palestrina, became a priest in the 1570s, and by 1580 was maestro di cap- pella at S. Luigi dei Francesi, also in Rome. In 1581 he moved to Mantua, taking a position at the Gonzaga court there; but in 1586 he moved back to Rome where he spent the rest of his life working as choirmaster at three separate churches, including the Cappella Giulia at St. Peter’s. He retired in 1620. Overlooked by many, he is very important: Soriano worked with Felice Anerio to revise the Roman Gradual in accordance with the needs of the Counter-Reformation, which work was left incomplete by Palestrina.
