`Musica sanat corpus per animam': Towar tU erstanding of the Use of Music in Responseto Plague, 1350-1600 Christopher Brian Macklin Doctor of Philosophy University of York Department of Music Submitted March 2008 BEST COPY AVAILABLE Variable print quality 2 Abstract In recent decadesthe study of the relationship between the human species and other forms of life has ceased to be an exclusive concern of biologists and doctors and, as a result, has provided an increasingly valuable perspective on many aspectsof cultural and social history. Until now, however, these efforts have not extended to the field of music, and so the present study representsan initial attempt to understand the use of music in Werrn Europe's responseto epidemic plague from the beginning of the Black Death to the end of the sixteenth century. This involved an initial investigation of the description of sound in the earliest plague chronicles, and an identification of features of plague epidemics which had the potential to affect music-making (such as its geographical scope, recurrence of epidemics, and physical symptoms). The musical record from 1350-1600 was then examined for pieces which were conceivably written or performed during plague epidemics. While over sixty such pieces were found, only a small minority bore indications of specific liturgical use in time of plague. Rather, the majority of pieces (largely settings of the hymn Stella coeli extirpavit and of Italian laude whose diffusion was facilitated by the Franciscan order) hinted at a use of music in the everyday life of the laity which only occasionally resulted in the production of notated musical scores. -

My comparative analysis of Missa Papae Marcelli includes discussion about the historical significance of Palestrina’s contribution to church music reform with regard to Marcello Cervini’s reforms in church doctrine. The compositional techniques and adherence to clarity of text are important aspects of Palestrina’s music that have earned him the title “savior” of polyphonic music. The comparative analysis will begin with a detailed study of Palestrina’s compositional method including an examination of voice leading, text setting, and cadence types. These compositional techniques will be compared to Anerio’s 1619 adaptation of the Palestrina model. An examination of Anerio’s adaptation illustrates how changes in composition shift from a contrapuntal design with elided phrases to a harmonic design with regular phrase structures. Adaptive techniques include both borrowed and newly composed material. Borrowed material includes introductory statements and closing gestures; however, much of the body of each movement is altered and shortened. -

November 2014 Guidelines for Music at Funerals Archdiocese of New York Music is integral to the funeral rites. It has the power to console and uplift the mourners and to strengthen the unity of the assembly in faith and love. The texts of the songs chosen for a particular celebration should express the paschal mystery of the Lord’s suffering, death, and triumph over death and should be related to the readings from Scripture. —Order of Christian Funerals, 30. !1 November 2014 In the celebration of her funeral rites, the Church recalls and participates in the redemption won for humanity by the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. In these same liturgies, the Church ministers to those who mourn the loss of a loved one and prays for those who have completed their earthly journey. The music which is chosen for the celebration of these rites can play a powerful role in supporting, consoling, and uplifting the participants, helping “to create in them a spirit of hope in Christ’s victory over death and in the Christian’s share in that victory.”1 The following guidelines are meant to assist family and friends of the deceased, music directors, and celebrants in the selection of music for funeral liturgies that will reflect Christ's Paschal Mystery and the Church’s hope in eternal life. ACTIVE PARTICIPATION The Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy states that full, conscious, and active participation is the right and duty of every baptized person, and is demanded by the very nature of the liturgy. -

ENGLISH CHANT Resources for Singing the Propers and Ordinary of the Roman Rite Mass in English Presentation by Steven W. Medicis, Director of Music, Saint James Church, Syracuse, New York The Role of Chant in the Roman Rite Liturgy According to the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (Sacrosanctum Concilium), one of the constitutions of the Second Vatican Council solemnly promulgated by His Holiness Pope Paul VI on December 4, 1963, • 116. The Church acknowledges Gregorian chant as spypecially suited to the Roman liturgy: therefore, other things being equal, it should be given pride of place in liturgical services. But other kinds of sacred music, especially polyphony, are by no means excluded from liturgical celebrations, so long as they accord with the spirit of the liturgical action... • 117. The typical edition of the books of Gregorian chant is to be completed; and a more critical edition is to be prepared of those books already published since the restoration by St. Pius X. It is desirable also that an edition be prepared containing simpler melodies, for use in small churches. The Roman Gradual • The “typical edition” specified in Article 117 is the Roman Gradual (Graduale Romanum), available in hardcopy form from several Catholic publishers of sacred music including CanticaNOVA Publications, GIA Publications, and OCP. • The Roman Gradual is the primary official book of liturgical music for the Roman Rite. • First published in 1908 at the request of Pope Saint Pius X by the Benedictine monks of Abbaye Saint‐Pierre de Solesmes in France and revised in 1974 following the issuance of the Roman Missal (Missale Romanum) of 1970. -

SING THE GRADUALE ROMANUM As reaffirmed in the Ordo Cantus Missæ (Vatican, 1970) the Mass Propers —Introit, Gradual, Alleluia, Offertory, and Communion —are to be drawn from the Graduale Romanum (most recent edition: Solesmes, 1974), just as the priest’s parts are found in the Missale Romanum and the Mass readings come from the Lectionary. However, based on the results of a 1968 survey1, the Consilium decided to revise Introit and Communion antiphons “for Masses without music.” As Pope Paul VI explained in 1969: The text of the “Graduale Romanum” has not been changed as far as the music is concerned. However, for a better understanding, the responsorial psalm, which St. Augustine and St. Leo the Great often mention, has been restored, and the Introit and Communion anti- phons have been adapted for Masses without singing.2 Needless to say, these revised “spoken” antiphons frequently do not match the sung versions found in the Graduale Romanum (especially the Communion antiphons). Since the Graduale Ro- manum is a book for singing, it would have been ridiculous to include these “spoken” texts in that book, so a place was found for them in the Missale Romanum, a practice which continues to this day (for the ease of priests who celebrate private Masses without a choir present). TheGeneral Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) has not changed, regarding the Introit and Communion antiphons, since its initial publication in the 1970’s. The Graduale Romanum text is the first option: INTROIT [“Entrance chant”]: For the entrance chant, one could use either the antiphon with its psalm as found in the Roman Gradual or in the Simple Gradual, or another chant, congruent with the theme of the sacred action, day or time, whose text has been approved by the Conference of Bishops. -
