welcome from the conference chairs
After having OMAE 2006 in Hamburg, we believe, now it is time again, demonstrating the great developments of the German maritime industry and bringing the Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering Conference back to Hamburg. Our long-term experience with OMAE conferences (since the eighties) and our strong involvement in several OOAE committees should make us a successful host for OMAE 2022.
Germany’s maritime industry is the biggest in Europe and it is the world leading nation concerning Offshore Wind and Arctic Science and Technology. The turnover of the German maritime economy is approx. 50 billion € p.a. with around 400.000 employees. The turnover in the maritime industry is about 18 billion € p.a. with approx. 100.000 employees working in more than 1000 companies in yards, engineering farms, research institutes and machinery and equipment suppliers. Germany’s offshore industry has been boosted during the last 10+ years by the developments in the offshore wind sector - what a coincidence that we had the first OMAE offshore wind papers at OMAE 2006 in Hamburg.
Securing these sustainable developments, Germany’s Government introduced a High-Tech Strategy, the National Masterplan Maritime Technologies (NMMT) and the Maritime Agenda 2025. All this is chaired and coordinated by the Maritime Coordinator of the Federal Government of Germany, who also supports having OMAE 2022 back in Hamburg. In addition, Industry 4.0 combines production methods with state-of-the-art information and communication technologies. The driving force behind this development is the rapidly increasing digitization of economy and society, which is significantly changing the future of manufacturing and work in Germany
OMAE 2022 is proposed to be hosted by the Hamburg University of Technology, in cooperation with the German Association of Marine Technology, a co-sponsoring society of OOAE. Bringing OMAE 2022 back to Hamburg will be also heavily supported by the German Government, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg (see also LoI from Senator -Frank Horch), marine associations, and the German maritime industry.
We warmly welcome participants to visit Hamburg again and are extremely confident Hamburg will provide an outstanding OMAE 2022 conference.

LOI GMT – OMAE Conference 2022
Dear OMAE Executive Committee, it is with great pleasure that, on behalf of the German Association for Marine Technology (GMT), I express our strong support and cooperation for organizing OMAE 2022 in Hamburg
GMT is a co-sponsoring society of OOAE and also co-organized OMAE 2006 in Hamburg. GMT was founded in 1983, as a non-profit association and represents nationwide the inter- ests of companies and research institutions in the area of marine technology towards the public and policy makers. The GMT is supporting the networking of its members from indus- try and science in order to initiate national and international research and development pro- jects. The GMT carries out periodically events with its members on topics of maritime engi- neering. For the benefit of its members, the GMT organizes joint stands at selected national and international trade fairs and conferences.
OMAE 2022 is proposed to be hosted by the Hamburg University of Technology, in coopera- tion with us, the German Association of Marine Technology, a co-sponsoring society of OOAE.
We warmly welcome participants to come to Hamburg and are very confident Hamburg will provide an excellent OMAE 2022 conference.

Culture from Hamburg hits the right notes – and they ring out far and wide. The North German city has a longstanding reputation as a leading centre for dance, music and theatre, with only New York and London beating it to the position of the world’s most successful city of musical theatre. It is not just the city’s many thrilling musical productions that are making waves, the Hamburg State Opera, Laeiszhalle, Thalia Theatre and Deutsches Schauspielhaus theatre
also offer outstanding cultural experiences. Spahrbier Christian Geheimtipp, / Michael Pasdzior, www.mediaserver.hamburg.de Photo: OMAE | Why Hamburg 27

Hamburg is pioneering new musical paths. Visible evidence comes in the form of the concert hall Elbphilharmonie – a cultural landmark for the city and a beacon for the world. Architecturally and acoustically brilliant, the venue will host top international performers from the worlds of classical, jazz, pop and world music. In addition to these world-class offerings for the ear, the treasures and exhibitions of the Metropolitan Region’s over 300 museums have plenty to delight and fascinate the eye.

As a green metropolis, Hamburg provides the perfect setting for planning events in an eco-friendly way. More and more hotels and service providers train their staff in the area of sustainability or acquire certification according to the international Green Globe environmental standard. Of course, the CCH also ensures sustainable management in its operations. CCH’s catering service partner uses exclusively biodegradable cleaning and dishwashing agents. All newly purchased electric appliances meet the highest criteria for energy and water efficiency. Waste food is processed to make biogas. The caterer makes every effort to source ingredients from sustainable sources, selecting them on a seasonal basis and from regional suppliers, to keep transport distances short for the sake of the environment.
Short distances between conference hotels, venues, points of interest and cultural hotspots and the
city’s excellent public infrastructure have a positive impact on the city’s ecological balance sheet as CO2- intensive transfers are avoided. In cooperation with the Hamburg Transport Association (HVV), the Hamburg Convention Bureau provides a special ticket for conferences, meetings and seminars, participants can travel across Hamburg’s entire local public transport network at reasonable rates and in a climate-friendly way. Value Added Tax (VAT), called MWST in Germany, is a consumption tax added to most goods and services. The national tax systems in Germany allow most non-resident business entities to claim a refund of the MWST.
A sample of services where North American companies that do business within Germany can be charged 7% / 19% MWST are: • Lodging • Event venue expenses • Conference fees • Meals • Transportation
When organizing conferences or tradeshows in Germany, there are several VAT refund opportunities that will ultimately lower the North American event planners costs, including: • VAT refund on business conferences and tradeshows where fees are charged. VAT registration prior to the planned meeting might be required. Photos: www.mediaserver.hamburg.de / C. O. Bruch / C. O. www.mediaserver.hamburg.de Photos: 50 OMAE | Event Catering

Hamburg offers boundless choices of unique and unconventional locations. Floating lounges on or above the water, exquisite ball rooms, historic portside sheds or modern architecture. The city offers something for every taste – always topped with local flavour. We have pre-selected the following venues for the OMAE social events.
ALTONA FISH AUCTION HALL
The Altona Fish Auction Hall - with its industrial look and rough charm, is one of the symbols of the city of Hamburg and always draws a crowd. In 1896 Kaiser Wilhelm II inaugurated the hall, a building styled after a Roman basilica, with red brick walls carrying the arched roof of steel and glass. It is located at the banks of the Elbe River and would guarantee a one-of-a-kind experience for your guests at the Conference Reception. OMAE | Special Dinner Locations 63

The Speicherstadt is more than 100 years old and is considered the world’s largest contiguous warehouse complex. In 2015 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Situated in the former free port, the red-brick building ensemble with its thick walls, copper roofs and blocks and tackles was built on oak piles between 1883 and 1888 and is among Hamburg’s main attractions. On an area that was once used for storing coffee, tea and other spices, visitors can now marvel at the Miniatur Wunderland, the world’s largest model railway, or experience spine-chilling tales of Klaus Störtebeker, the famous buccaneer, at the Hamburg Dungeon. The Speicherstadt’s spice museum provides insights into the history of the warehouse complex and the lives of stevedores at the time, while the adjacent wine cellar serves as a venue for parties. Restaurants, cafés and quaint historic warehouse floors offer unique event venues. OMAE | Unique Group Activities 71
PORT AND RIVER CRUISES
The River Elbe has always been a lifeline and major traffic route for Hamburg. It provides direct access to the North Sea about 100 kilometres away and has formed the basis for the development of Hamburg’s port. Huge container ships arrive in Hamburg with the rhythm of the tides and bring goods from overseas, the majority of which is distributed to Central Europe, Scandinavia and the Baltic States by shuttle boat, rail or road. Visitors to Hamburg can best experience the hustle and bustle of the port handling terminals on a traditional harbour boat trip or Elbe River bus tour.

The Hamburg Ship Model Basin (HSVA) is a private self-supporting, non-profit research organisation. The main task is to advice the maritime industry (world-wide) in the fields of hydrodynamics and ice technology (ships, structures). HSVA is especially experienced in model test experiments of waterborne transport systems in open water and in ice. Furthermore
HSVA provides services of ship hull form development, optimisation and analysis by means of computational fluid dynamics. HSVA has established an Ice Technology Department in 1974, when a second generation ice model basin (30 m long / 6 m wide) became operational. In 1984 a third generation ice model basin was inaugurated, which is today with its 78 m length, 10 m width and 2.5 m/5.0 m depth one of the largest in the world. In 1990 the small ice test basin was rebuilt to an Arctic Environmental Test Basin. This facility with its installations (e.g. wave maker) is unique world-wide and allows environmental research under arctic conditions. In addition, HSVA is operating climate laboratories for the determination of material properties under cold climate. Since 1995 HSVA’s ice and environmental test facilities became a Large Scale Facility (ARCTECLAB). 74 OMAE | City Map
