/ '", ... it PACIFIC ISLANDS PROGRAM ! University of Hawaii j Miscellaneous Work Papers 1974:1 . BIBLIOGRAPHY OF HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE MATERIALS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII, MANOA CAMPUS Second Printing, 1979 Photocopy, Summer 1986 ,i ~ Foreword Each year the Pacific Islands Program plans to duplicate inexpensively a few work papers whose contents appear to justify a wider distribution than that of classroom contact or intra-University circulation. For the most part, they will consist of student papers submitted in academic courses and which, in their respective ways, represent a contribution to existing knowledge of the Pacific. Their subjects will be as varied as is the multi-disciplinary interests of the Program and the wealth of cooperation received from the many Pacific-interested members of the University faculty and the cooperating com munity. Pacific Islands Program Room 5, George Hall Annex 8 University of Hawaii • PRELIMINARY / BIBLIOGRAPHY OF HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE MATERIALS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII, MANOA CAMPUS Compiled by Nancy Jane Morris Verna H. F. Young Kehau Kahapea Velda Yamanaka , . • Revised 1974 Second Printing, 1979 PREFACE The Hawaiian Collection of the University of Hawaii Library is perhaps the world's largest, numbering more than 50,000 volumes. As students of the Hawaiian language, we have a particular interest in the Hawaiian language texts in the Collection. Up to now, however, there has been no single master list or file through which to gain access to all the Hawaiian language materials. This is an attempt to provide such list. We culled the bibliographical information from the Hawaiian Collection Catalog and the Library she1flists. We attempted to gather together all available materials in the Hawaiian language, on all subjects, whether imprinted on paper or microfilm, on tape or phonodisc.

The pilings that are out there, that you have seen every time you have come here to this beach, are left over from the original pier that was built when the plantation was organized. They were out here in this remote area and they needed to get the sugar to market, and so that was built in order to get the sugar, and whatever else they were growing, to Honolulu to the markets. These (pilings) have been here ever since.

  • Statement of JOHN DE FRIES Hawai'i Tourism Authority Before the SENATE COMMITTEE on ENERGY, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, and TOURISM
Statement of JOHN DE FRIES Hawai‘i Tourism Authority before the SENATE COMMITTEE ON ENERGY, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, AND TOURISM Monday, February 8, 2021 3:00 PM State Capitol, Conference Room #224 In consideration of SENATE BILL NO. 916 RELATING TO TAXATION Chair Wakai, Vice Chair Misalucha, and members of the Committee on Energy, Economic Development, and Tourism: the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA) supports Senate Bill 916, which specifies that the $1,000,000 of Transient Accommodations Tax revenues currently allocated to operate a Hawaiian center and the Museum of Hawaiian Music and Dance may also be used to plan, design, and construct these facilities at an unspecified location. SB 916 is needed as we move forward to create the new Museum of Hawaiian Music and Dance. This measure will allow the funds to be utilized both for operations and development of the center. Currently, the law does not provide clear guidance as to how the funds may be utilized. The term “operations,” as found in the current statute, appears to restrict the use of the funds to the day-to- day activities of a center. Since this will be a new endeavor, we believe that allowing the funds to also be used for the planning, design, and construction will encourage more interest as we move forward in the Request for Proposal (RFP) process. It is for these reasons that HTA supports SB 916. We appreciate this opportunity to provide testimony. Managed by the Festival Companies 2201 Kalākaua Avenue, Suite A500 Honolulu, Hawaiʽi 96815 • (808) 931-3100 • RoyalHawaiianCenter.com TO: Hon.

Conklin, Ph.D. Executive Director e-mail [email protected] Unity, Equality, Aloha for all To: HOUSE COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION For hearing Thursday, March 18, 2021 Re: HCR179, HR148 URGING THE SUPERINTENDENT OF EDUCATION TO REQUEST THE BOARD OF EDUCATION TO CHANGE THE NAME OF PRESIDENT WILLIAM MCKINLEY HIGH SCHOOL BACK TO THE SCHOOL'S PREVIOUS NAME OF HONOLULU HIGH SCHOOL AND TO REMOVE THE STATUE OF PRESIDENT MCKINLEY FROM THE SCHOOL PREMISES TESTIMONY IN OPPOSITION There is only one reason why some activists want to abolish "McKinley" from the name of the school and remove his statue from the campus. The reason is, they want to rip the 50th star off the American flag and return Hawaii to its former status as an independent nation. And through this resolution they want to enlist you legislators as collaborators in their treasonous propaganda campaign. The strongest evidence that this is their motive is easy to see in the "whereas" clauses of this resolution and in documents provided by the NEA and the HSTA which are filled with historical falsehoods trashing the alleged U.S. "invasion" and "occupation" of Hawaii; alleged HCR179, HR148 Page !1 of !10 Conklin HSE EDN 031821 suppression of Hawaiian language and culture; and civics curriculum in the early Territorial period. Portraying Native Hawaiians as victims of colonial oppression and/or belligerent military occupation is designed to bolster demands to "give Hawaii back to the Hawaiians", thereby producing a race-supremacist government and turning the other 80% of Hawaii's people into second-class citizens.

Volume X, No. 21 Waikīkī Improvement Association May 21—27, 2009 Waikīkī Wiki Wiki Wire Legislature Appropriates $7.5 million for Waikīkī Beach Improvements During the session just completed the Hawai‘i State Legislature appropriated $7.5 million for improvements to Waikīkī Beach or other visitor area resort beaches. The appropriation provides $250,000 each for planning and design and $7 million for construction. DLNR is considering using its the funds to establish on ongoing sand replenishment program for Waikīkī Beach. It is not yet clear exactly how the State money will affect Kyo-ya’s Gray’s Beach Project but it is expected to be complementary. The legislature also amended the Statewide Traffic Code to allow the Counties to prohibit or regulate personal assistive mobility devices, Segways or like devices, on sidewalks. The Waikīkī Improvement Association supported the measure. Waikīkī has the busiest sidewalks in the state. The use of Segways and motorized scooters on the sidewalks could be a safety hazard to pedestrians. If the Governor signs the bill, the City and County of Honolulu would gain the authority to regulate the devices. • My Life in Music
My Life in Music by James Mo’ikeha (Courtesy James Mo’ikeha) Introduction by Ishmael Stagner: This is Jimmy Mo’ikeha, and he is the only person that I can find that goes back to that generation of entertainers in Waikiki that worked in the 50’s and 60’s. Everyone else is either dead or “incapacitated” at this point. You can either ask him questions, or he can respond to what I’ve just said (in my paper). Aloha awakea (good afternoon), aloha kakou (greetings everyone). I just want to say a couple things. I appreciated Ish’s reference to the ancient hula being related to the Hawaiian martial arts, I think that’s why Tony Todaro wrote the song, “Keep your Eyes on the Hands!” (laughter) I want to acknowledge the presence of Elder Komatsu. In one of the notebooks that my dad left me, there’s a newspaper clipping in which it states that the Hawaii State legislature officially congratulated Adney Komatsu as the first Nisei (second generation Japanese-American ) to be called as a general authority of the LDS church, and its an article that I treasure very much. Elder Komatsu and I go back a long way. For many years I was working in Palau (aka Peleliu ) I was working in a hotel for an airlines and the church had just been established there and Elder Komatsu made one of his trips as a general authority, and there was a Sunday evening fireside and I was not able to attend for various reasons, and later upon returning to the hotel, elder Komatsu scolded me for not being there, but he was even more disappointed because my kitchen was closed! (laughter) and he had not eaten.
