The pilings that are out there, that you have seen every time you have come here to this beach, are left over from the original pier that was built when the plantation was organized. They were out here in this remote area and they needed to get the sugar to market, and so that was built in order to get the sugar, and whatever else they were growing, to Honolulu to the markets. These (pilings) have been here ever since. -

Bolig The advent of this online discography is a continuation of record descriptions that were compiled by me and published in book form by Allan Sutton, the publisher and owner of Mainspring Press. When undertaking our work, Allan and I were aware of the work started by Ted Fa- gan and Bill Moran, in which they intended to account for every recording made by the Victor Talking Machine Company. We decided to take on what we believed was a more practical approach, one that best met the needs of record collectors. Simply stat- ed, Fagan and Moran were describing recordings that were not necessarily published; I believed record collectors were interested in records that were actually available. We decided to account for records found in Victor catalogs, ones that were purchased and found in homes after 1901 as 78rpm discs, many of which have become highly sought- after collector’s items. Statement of JOHN DE FRIES Hawai‘i Tourism Authority before the SENATE COMMITTEE ON ENERGY, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, AND TOURISM Monday, February 8, 2021 3:00 PM State Capitol, Conference Room #224 In consideration of SENATE BILL NO. 916 RELATING TO TAXATION Chair Wakai, Vice Chair Misalucha, and members of the Committee on Energy, Economic Development, and Tourism: the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA) supports Senate Bill 916, which specifies that the $1,000,000 of Transient Accommodations Tax revenues currently allocated to operate a Hawaiian center and the Museum of Hawaiian Music and Dance may also be used to plan, design, and construct these facilities at an unspecified location. SB 916 is needed as we move forward to create the new Museum of Hawaiian Music and Dance. This measure will allow the funds to be utilized both for operations and development of the center. Currently, the law does not provide clear guidance as to how the funds may be utilized. The term “operations,” as found in the current statute, appears to restrict the use of the funds to the day-to- day activities of a center. Since this will be a new endeavor, we believe that allowing the funds to also be used for the planning, design, and construction will encourage more interest as we move forward in the Request for Proposal (RFP) process. It is for these reasons that HTA supports SB 916. We appreciate this opportunity to provide testimony. M-70 CURTIS PIEHU IAUKEA COLLECTION Introduction The CurtisPiehu Iaukea Collection consists of personaland professionalpapers, including correspondence, commissions, diaries, and photographs given to the Hawaii State Archives at various times. The collection initially was deposited in the Archives by Iaukea in 1926 as a loan and then subsequently more material was acquired fromhis grandsons, Curtis Piehu Iaukea II around 1974 and Edward B. Watson in 1978. In 1936 Iaukea removed some of the material and loaned it to Jean Hobbs to work on his memoirs. This material was later recovered fromJean Hobbs' estate as well as a gift donated by A. R. Nylen, the proprietor of Aala Pawn Shop in Honolulu. The collection also contains a copy of a typescript of the biography of Curtis P. Iaukea by Loma Iaukea Watson, his daughter. There are handwritten annotations and corrections in this copy of the typescript. Access to this manuscriptcollection is unrestricted Biographical Sketch Curtis Piehu Iaukea was born in Waimea, Hawaii on December 13, 1855 to J. W. and Lahapa (Nalanipo) Iaukea. At a young age Iaukea was adopted by his uncle Kaihupa'a, a royal retainer to King Kamehameha III, who raised Iaukea to followin his footstepsas a retainer. Being under the care of Kaihupa'a, Iaukea lived near the palace grounds and grew up among the royal family. Iaukea's education, which was sponsored by King Kamehameha IV, allowed him to attend St. Alban's college, predecessor to Iolani School, and an Anglican school in Lahaina. In 1870 Iaukea returnedto Honolulu and worked as a steward on Kamehameha V's staff. -

The reason is, they want to rip the 50th star off the American flag and return Hawaii to its former status as an independent nation. And through this resolution they want to enlist you legislators as collaborators in their treasonous propaganda campaign. The strongest evidence that this is their motive is easy to see in the "whereas" clauses of this resolution and in documents provided by the NEA and the HSTA which are filled with historical falsehoods trashing the alleged U.S. "invasion" and "occupation" of Hawaii; alleged HCR179, HR148 Page !1 of !10 Conklin HSE EDN 031821 suppression of Hawaiian language and culture; and civics curriculum in the early Territorial period. Portraying Native Hawaiians as victims of colonial oppression and/or belligerent military occupation is designed to bolster demands to "give Hawaii back to the Hawaiians", thereby producing a race-supremacist government and turning the other 80% of Hawaii's people into second-class citizens. -

Volume X, No. 21 Waikīkī Improvement Association May 21—27, 2009 Waikīkī Wiki Wiki Wire Legislature Appropriates $7.5 million for Waikīkī Beach Improvements During the session just completed the Hawai‘i State Legislature appropriated $7.5 million for improvements to Waikīkī Beach or other visitor area resort beaches. The appropriation provides $250,000 each for planning and design and $7 million for construction. DLNR is considering using its the funds to establish on ongoing sand replenishment program for Waikīkī Beach. It is not yet clear exactly how the State money will affect Kyo-ya’s Gray’s Beach Project but it is expected to be complementary. The legislature also amended the Statewide Traffic Code to allow the Counties to prohibit or regulate personal assistive mobility devices, Segways or like devices, on sidewalks. The Waikīkī Improvement Association supported the measure. Waikīkī has the busiest sidewalks in the state. The use of Segways and motorized scooters on the sidewalks could be a safety hazard to pedestrians. If the Governor signs the bill, the City and County of Honolulu would gain the authority to regulate the devices. D’altronde ero molto più giovane di ora e gli unici motivi per cui mi affascinava erano il suono e le dimensioni ridotte. Il primo strumento che ebbi tra le mani (e che mi fu regalato) era di quelli cosiddetti entry level, ovvero da principianti. L’ho suonato per almeno sette o otto anni prima di decidere che fosse il momento di cambiarlo. Mi ricordo che a causa del materiale (una qualche sottospecie di finto legno) e delle corde, la corda del Do (la terza) era così sensibile da suonare sempre stonata. Bastava schiacciarla poco più del necessario per far aumentare il suono di un quarto di tono e renderlo fuori luogo rispetto all’armonia che stavo producendo. Spesso ero costretto a gestire la forza di ogni singolo dito della mano sinistra, perché ad ognuno di essi capitava di dover suonare qualche nota su quella corda. Eppure con quell’ukulele sono riuscito a suonare molta musica.
