Messianic texts are prayers in which the Jewish People express a hope that the Moshiach will come soon and open a world in which the entire human race recognizes the Jewish G-d as G-d. The great tragedies that struck Jewish comunities during the last 2000 years were often viewed as the percusors of the coming of the Moshiach and led to the recital of messianic prayers as Jews were led to their deaths. The prayer of Aleinu L’Shabeach was recited by those who died a martyr’s death in Blois, France in 1171 CE. Jews who were being led to their deaths in the concentration camps during the Holocaust sang Ani Ma’Mamin B’Emunah Sh’Laima Bi’Biyus Ha’Moshiach-I believe with unbreakable faith that the Moshiach will come. Karp: The “Hassidic Chant” of Paul Robeson 53 Performing Black-Jewish Symbiosis: The “Hassidic Chant” of Paul Robeson JONATHAN KARP* On May 9, 1958, the African American singer and political activist Paul Robeson (1898–1976) performed “The Hassidic [sic] Chant of Levi Isaac,” along with a host of spirituals and folk songs, before a devoted assembly of his fans at Carnegie Hall. The “Hassidic Chant,” as Robeson entitled it, is a version of the Kaddish (Memorial Prayer) attributed to the Hasidic rebbe (master), Levi Yitzhak of Berditchev (1740–1810), a piece also known as the “Din Toyre mit Got” (“The Lawsuit with God”). According to tradition, Levi Yizhak had composed the song spontaneously on a Rosh Hashanah as he contemplated the steadfast faith of his people in the face of their ceaseless suffering. From a religious perspective it enacts spirit entering matter, a creation story of potential salvation crossed with reprehensible arrogance. As a historical narrative, the golem story becomes a tale of Jewish powerlessness and oppression, of pogroms and ghettoization, of assimilation and exile, and sometimes, of renewal. As the subject of a course in women, gender and sexuality studies, the golem narrative can be seen as a relentless questioning of otherness and identity and as a revelation of the complex intersectionalities of gender, class, sexuality, race, disability, and ethnicity.

    THE KADDISH by JENNIFER ADELE SCHWARTZBERG (Under the Direction of David S. Williams) ABSTRACT This thesis traces the history and significance of a Jewish prayer, the Kaddish. The Kaddish plays several important roles in Jewish liturgy, and by researching its history and role within Judaism I hope to demonstrate its uniqueness and importance. The Kaddish plays the primary role of the memorial prayer for the dead, but it does not mention death or bereavement, warranting examination of its origin as the prayer for the dead, as well as its interaction with Jewish mourning. This thesis researches the linguistics, history and concepts of the Kaddish, as well as detailing the prayer’s effect on the Lord’s Prayer and its role in the Holocaust.     DISTURBANCES IN THE PERCEPTUAL FIELD This chapter began at least 10 years ago and has undergone constant development through at least seven versions. In the design of this book I tried to find some way to incorporate its contents into another chapter, such as the previous, but it has its own integrity and value. Thus I include it as a separate chapter. The mystery of the human being is as great as the mystery of the cosmos. We are just beginning the discovery of each. The human is a highly complex organism living in relationship with the external world and thus acquiring a history, developing an internal world which becomes as real in its impact on personality as the external world, possessing a spirit or soul providing unique identity and resources,79 and living out all of these dimensions through the medium of a highly complex biological system which we call “body.”80 So, what’s normal? We mistakenly feel that there is some “normal” way for this all to be, as if there were a standard human pattern from which we all were cut or according to which we all developed. But the differences in our genetic inheritance, the differences in our personal and family histories, the differences in the ways in which we are hormonally enabled and neurologically wired, to name a few, all make each of us different. As one who teaches, I have had to recognize the different styles of learning and the neurological differences which make it easy to learn some things and difficult to learn others.
