    journal of jesuit studies 4 (2017) 250-269 brill.com/jjs The Best Laid Plans…: Jesuit Counsel, Peacebuilding, and Disaster on the Chilean Frontier; The Martyrs of Elicura, 16121 Andrew Redden University of Liverpool [email protected] Abstract In a context of ongoing warfare on the Chilean frontier in the first decades of the seventeenth-century, the Society of Jesus and, in particular, Luis de Valdivia (d.1642) labored as both missionaries and peace-brokers between the warring sides. Making peace was an act of mercy highlighted in the Constitutions as well as a necessary pre- condition for evangelization. Nevertheless, in order to develop, champion, and sustain a viable peace process, it was necessary for Valdivia to not just give counsel to the king and the king’s representatives, but effectively become a crown agent with the power to make strategic and highly political decisions. This, of course, flew in the face of the Society’s own prohibitions on engaging in “reason of state” and also antagonized many whose interests lay in the prolongation of war. The following article charts Valdivia’s attempts to balance these spiritual and temporal obligations in the context of the disastrous chain of events that led to the slaughter and enslavement of hundreds of indigenous allies and the killing of three Jesuits at Elicura in 1612. Counsel failed, and the fragile peace-process teetered on the brink of collapse. Se analiza un corpus documental tanto de autores peninsulares como criollos, donde se recorren los principales rasgos que caracterizan esta variedad dialectal. El artículo parte contextualizando el estudio, para luego centrarse en las características de la fonética de los peninsulares que llegan al ‘Reino de Chile’, pasando luego al habla de los criollos chilenos. Palabras clave: español de Chile, período colonial, fonética histórica. The present article is a synthesis of the phonetic characterization that has had the Chilean Spanish Language from its origins (XVI century) to the end of the colonial period (XVIII century). A documentary corpus of peninsular authors is analyzed as much as “criollos”, where the main features that characterize this dialectal variety are shown. The article starts contextualizing the study, then it centers on the characteristics of peninsular phonetics of the population that arrived at the ‘Kingdom of Chile’, and finally it analyzes the speech of the Chilean “criollos”. Using original documents I gathered in research trips to Chile and Spain, I am able to reconstruct the debates that went on both sides of the Atlantic over funds, protection from ’ th pirates, and indigenous slavery that so defined Chile s formative 17 century. While my conclusions are unique, frontier residents from Paraguay to northern New Spain were also dealing with volatile indigenous alliances, threats from European enemies, and questions about how their tiny settlements could get and keep the attention of the crown.

La muestra fue fruto de la recopilación personal, durante dos años, de María Dolores Cabezas de Herrera, presidenta de la Asociación de Amigos de la Cultura Extremeña, y recientemente nominada al premio Calabazón del año 2005. Y bien valía la pena, como ahora lo hace, que este recorrido por la historia de Don Benito desde el siglo XVI al siglo XIX se plasmara en una publicación de la que todos los vecinos y curiosos disfrutasen. La compilación de la autora está orientada a las armas familiares, incluyendo entre las armas territoriales el escudo de la ciudad, dejando fuera las armas de comunidades religiosas y las armas devocionales por ser éstas generales.
