RESISTING DIASPORA AND TRANSNATIONAL DEFINITIONS IN MONIQUE TRUONG’S THE BOOK OF SALT, PETER BACHO’S CEBU, AND OTHER FICTION by DEBORA STEFANI Under the Direction of Ian Almond and Pearl McHaney ABSTRACT Even if their presence is only temporary, diasporic individuals are bound to disrupt the existing order of the pre-structured communities they enter. Plenty of scholars have written on how identity is constructed; I investigate the power relations that form when components such as ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, class, and language intersect in diasporic and transnational movements. How does sexuality operate on ethnicity so as to cause an existential crisis? How does religion function both to reinforce and to hide one’s ethnic identity? Diasporic subjects participate in the resignification of their identity not only because they encounter (semi)-alien, socio-economic and cultural environments but also because components of their identity mentioned above realign along different trajectories, and this realignment undoubtedly affects the way they interact in the new environment. To explore this territory, I analyze Monique Truong’s The Book of Salt, Peter Bacho’s Cebu, Linh Dinh’s “Prisoner with a Dictionary” and “‘!’,” and Gish Jen’s Mona in the Promised Land. In their transnational journey, diasporic subjects encounter different (and similar) socio-political, economic, and cultural environments. They enter pre-structured communities that behave according to rules and regulations negotiated throughout decades, centuries, millennia. How do they participate in the socio-political life of the host country? What economic factors determine their new place in the workforce? What aspects of the new culture will they accept and re- elaborate? Which ones will they struggle with or abruptly refuse? Even if their presence is only temporary, diasporic individuals are bound to disrupt the existent order. This disruption affects newcomers as well as natives; it forces the latter to reassess and bargain new subject positions for themselves. As scholars have been writing abundantly on the effects of immigration and diaspora on the natives, I concentrate on the ways diasporic subjects ascribe new meanings to their identities. What power relations form in the course of this process? “All diasporic journeys are composite […]. They are embarked upon, lived, and re-lived through multiple modalities: modalities, for example, of gender, race, class, religion, language and generation” (Brah 184). Diasporic subjects participate in the resignification of their identity not only because they encounter (semi)-alien, socio-economical and cultural environments but also because components of their identity such as sexuality, religion, gender, language, and economic status realign along different trajectories, and this realignment undoubtedly affects the way they interact in the new environment. 2 Influential for the writing of my dissertation is Lisa Lowe’s discussion of how the transnational movement of capital has modified the construction of gender. Lisa Lowe states For in the complex encounters between transnational capital and women within patriarchal gender structures, the very processes that produce a racialized feminized proletariat both displace traditional and national patriarchies and their defining regulations of gender, space, and work and racialize the women in relation to other racialized groups. These displacements produce new possibilities precisely because they have led to a breakdown and a reformulation of the categories of nation, race, class, and gender. (Immigrant 161-62) Lowe illustrates above a possible scenario resulting from the clash between transnationalism and women oppressed by patriarchy. How is

Many critics and citizens have argued that the United States of America is an inherently anti-imperial nation; however, this ignores the multitude of colonial enterprises and imperialistic tendencies of the U.S. While the founding fathers were resisting British colonial tyranny, American colonists were actively attempting to replace the indigenous population and settle tribal lands west of the Appalachian Mountains. The U.S. continued this removal of the native population, and began its wars of imperialism, in their drive for Manifest Destiny. The involvement of U.S. military forces in the coup of the Hawaiian monarchy, led by the American businessmen in Hawaii, marked the first external connection to imperialism for the United States. Despite the nation’s decision to back independence-minded colonies of Spain in the Spanish-American War, it subsequently took over colonial authority for the Philippines, ignoring the budding First Philippine Republic. The U.S.’s imperialism shifted after World War II and began to be shaped through the use of foreign military bases, particularly in places like Japan and Germany. This only intensified during the Cold War, as the U.S. and the Soviet Union arose as true global powers.

    ASIATIC, VOLUME 9, NUMBER 1, JUNE 2015 An Untenable Dichotomy: The Idea of Home in John Okada’s No-No Boy Wenxin Li1 Stony Brook University, USA Abstract Given the particular history of Asian immigration in the U.S., the idea of a stable and safe home has been regularly sought after in Asian American literature. Whether these Asian immigrants abandoned their homeland due to war, famine, or other disasters, the urgency to find safety and protection in a new home in America remains one of most enduring themes. In No-No Boy, a 1957 novel by John Okada that explores the traumatic aftermath of the internment of Japanese Americans during and after World War II, the idea of home is presented in an unstable dichotomy between affirming Americanness and perpetual foreignness. The novel‟s protagonist Ichiro Yamada regains his freedom after serving a prison term for refusing to join the American military in the war against Japan, only to find a dysfunctional home in the back of the family grocery store. Everything here is Japanese: the food, language and allegiance. Ichiro‟s home is contrasted with Kenji‟s home, which showcases its Americanisation in every aspect. By setting up this dichotomy, Okada exposes the tension within the Japanese American community in the difficult process of assimilation into American society. The ultimate hope for Ichiro seems to lie in a home that is yet to be built, a life with Emi in an America that simply accepts him for who he is without racialisation.     ABSTRACT Title of Document: THE GHOST AS GHOST: COMPULSORY RATIONALISM AND ASIAN AMERICAN LITERATURE, POST-1965 Lawrence-Minh Bùi Davis, Doctor of Philosophy, 2014 Directed By: Professor Sangeeta Ray, Department of English Since the early 1980s, scholarship across disciplines has employed the “ghostly” as critical lens for understanding the upheavals of modernity. The ghost stands metaphorically for the lasting trace of what has been erased, whether bodies or histories. The ghost always stands for something , rather than the ghost simply is —a conception in keeping with dominant Western rationalism. But such a reading practice threatens the very sort of violent erasure it means to redress, uncovering lost histories at the expense of non-Western and “minority” ways of knowing. What about the ghost as ghost? What about the array of non-rational knowledges out of which the ghostly frequently emerges? This project seeks to transform the application of the ghostly as scholarly lens, bringing to bear Foucault’s notion of “popular” knowledges and drawing from Asian American studies and critical mixed race studies frameworks. Its timeline begins with the 1965 Immigration Act and traces across the 1970s-1990s rise of multiculturalism and the 1980s-2000s rise of the Multiracial Movement. For field of analysis, the project turns to Asian American literature and its rich evocations of the ghostly and compulsory rationalism, in particular Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior and China Men , Amy Tan’s The Hundred Secret Senses , Nora Okja Keller’s Comfort Woman , Lan Cao’s Monkey Bridge , Heinz Insu Fenkl’s Memories of My Ghost Brother , Shawna Yang Ryan’s Water Ghosts , and Ruth Ozeki’s A Tale for the Time Being .

The Before Columbus Foundation was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit educational and service organization dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary American multicultural literature. The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. In 1978, the Board of Directors of BCF (authors, editors, and publishers representing the multicultural diversity of American Literature) decided that one of its programs should be a book award that would, for the first time, respect and honor excellence in American literature without restric- tion or bias with regard to race, sex, creed, cultural origin, size of press or ad budget, or even genre.

How this interaction effects significant change. Considers political activism for civil rights and against the Vietnam War as they intersect with the development of rock and roll, R&B, acoustic and political folk music, and post-bebop jazz. The Colony was founded in 1907 by American composer Edward MacDowell and Marian MacDowell, his wife. Since its inception, the Colony has supported the work of more than 6,000 women and men of exceptional ability. Situated on 450 acres of woodlands and fields in Peterborough, New Hampshire, the Colony offers 32 studios to artists in seven disciplines. MacDowell is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Landmark. Works of art conceived, developed, and completed during residencies at the Colony have added immeasurably to our country’s cultural life. In 1997, The MacDowell Colony was awarded the National Medal of Arts for “nurturing and inspiring many of this century’s finest artists.” More than 250 Fellows work at the Colony each year from all parts of the United States and abroad. Anyone may apply. The sole criterion for acceptance is talent as judged by a juried committee in the applicant’s discipline. A Fellowship lasts from two weeks to two months. Accepted artists are given a private studio in which to work as well as room and all meals. There is no fee. The Colony encourages artists from all backgrounds to apply and does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, handicap, sex, religion, sexual orientation, marital status, or national origin.
