In 2018 more people travelled on rail in Ireland than ever before. Demand for rail has increased by 6% per annum over the past three years. The increase in passengers is expected to continue. Around 70% of all rail journeys are in the GDA.

All of the top 10 busiest trains recorded in the 2018 Rail Census are Dublin commuter and DART trains with passenger loadings ranging from 820 to 1,150 passengers.
The three top loading trains are morning peak DART trains operating out of Malahide to Bray/Greystones.
