Here they are, hand-picked by us for you. Here are the best visual novels of all time, available for you to download on PC and steam. Best Visual Novels on PC and Steam. Umineko (When They Cry) – Umineko is a visual novel in the truest sense of the term. Meaning there’s no gameplay to speak of at all; the entire ‘game’ is just a matter of clicking through copious amounts of text and watching as the story unfold. Despite the sluggish start to the first three episodes, things pick up dramatically once the creepy stuff kicks in, and Umineko stands tall as one of the most intriguing and engaging visual novel stories we’ve ever played. That soundtrack too, though. Best Visual Novels on PC and Steam. Higurashi (When They Cry) – Higurashi is a predecessor of sorts to Umineko, and while its story is just as gripping, we don’t recommend starting with this one unless you enjoyed what you saw of Umineko. -

Imōto-Moe: Sexualized Relationships Between Brothers and Sisters in Japanese Animation

This is done by analysing four different series from 2010s, in which incest is a major theme. The analysis is done using visual analysis. The study concludes that although the series can show sexualization of drawn underage girls, reading the works as if they would posit either real or fictional little sisters as sexual targets. Instead, the analysis suggests that following the narrative, the works should be read as fictional underage girls expressing a pure feelings and sexuality, unspoiled by adult corruption. To understand moe, it is necessary to understand the history of Japanese animation. Much of the genres, themes and styles in manga and anime are due to Tezuka Osamu, the “god of manga” and “god of animation”. From the 1950s, Tezuka was influenced by Disney and other western animators at the time. -

Different PEGI Age Labels and Their Effect on Aggressive Affect, Aggressive Cognition and Arousal
Different PEGI age labels and their effect on aggressive affect, aggressive cognition and arousal David van Duuren 0056316 Masterthesis C&M Eerste begeleider: Dr. Ard Heuvelman Tweede begeleider: Maurice Tan, Msc 1 Abstract This study investigated the effects of three different Pan European Game Information (PEGI) age labels on aggression. These three different age labels, 3+, 12+ and 18+, were a reflection of three different degrees of violence. Based on the General Aggression Model (GAM), aggressive affect, aggressive cognition and arousal were measured by means of an experiment. The results show that aggressive affect increased after playing 18+ labeled video games, which was in line with the GAM. Aggressive cognition decreased after playing 18+ labeled video games, which contradicted the GAM. For arousal, no effect was found. However, the arousal measurement turned out not to be a valid reflection of arousal in the GAM. Since no comparison between PEGI and other video game content rating systems has taken place and since there is uncertainty about the effect of violent video games on aggressive behavior in general, it is not possible to draw any conclusions about the academic value of PEGI. 2 Introduction The video game industry is a large industry, and growing. Having its origins in the 70s, video games at that time were very primitive compared to current standards. Hand in hand with technological innovations since that period, video games have become more and more realistic. Realism in video games can manifest itself in different ways: graphical improvement is an important one. In the beginning, video games were nothing more than a number of geometrical shapes, nowadays they are a clear resemblance of the real world. -
Role Playing Games Role Playing Computer Games Are a Version Of
Role Playing Games Role Playing computer games are a version of early non-computer games that used the same mechanics as many computer role playing games. The history of Role Playing Games (RPG) comes out of table-top games such as Dungeons and Dragons. These games used basic Role Playing Mechanics to create playable games for multiple players. When computers and computer games became doable one of the first games (along with Adventure games) to be implemented were Role Playing games. The core features of Role Playing games include the following features: • The game character has a set of features/skills/traits that can be changed through Experience Points (xp). • XP values are typically increased by playing the game. As the player does things in the game (killing monsters, completing quests, etc) the player earns XP. • Player progression is defined by Levels in which the player acquires or refines skills/traits. • Game structure is typically open-world or has open-world features. • Narrative and progress is normally done by completing Quests. • Game Narrative is typically presented in a non-linear quests or exploration. Narrative can also be presented as environmental narrative (found tapes, etc), or through other non-linear methods. • In some cases, the initial game character can be defined by the player and the initial mix of skills/traits/classes chosen by the player. • Many RPGs require a number of hours to complete. • Progression in the game is typically done through player quests, which can be done in different order. • In Action RPGs combat is real-time and in turn-based RPGs the combat is turn-based. -

Yesterday’s marvel is tomorrow’s museum piece. The same applies to games, although it is not just the core game technology that continues to develop at breakneck speed. The human machine interfaces we use to interact with games are becoming more sophisticated and at the same time, easier to use. The Wii Balance Board™ and the MotionPlus™, Microsoft’s Project Natal and Sony’s PlayStation® Eye are all reinventing how we interact with games, and in turn this is playing part in a greater shift. -

A Scoping Review of Health Game Research: Past, Present, and Future
GAMES FOR HEALTH JOURNAL: Research, Development, and Clinical Applications Volume 1, Number 2, 2012 ª Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. DOI: 10.1089/g4h.2012.0011 A Scoping Review of Health Game Research: Past, Present, and Future Hadi Kharrazi, MD, PhD, Amy Shirong Lu, PhD, Fardad Gharghabi, MD, and Whitney Coleman, MS Abstract Health game research has flourished over the last decade. The number of peer-reviewed scientific publications has surged as the clinical application of health games has diversified. In response to this growth, several past literature reviews have assessed the effectiveness of health games in specific clinical subdomains. The past literature reviews, however, have not provided a general scope of health games independent of clinical context. The present systematic review identified 149 publications. All sources were published before 2011 in a peer- reviewed venue. To be included in this review, publications were required (1) to be an original research, (2) to focus on health, (3) to utilize a sound research design, (4) to report quantitative health outcomes, and (5) to target healthcare receivers. Initial findings showed certain trends in health game publications: Focus on younger male demographics, relatively low number of study participants, increased number of controlled trials, short duration of intervention periods, short duration and frequency of user–game interaction, dominance of exercise and rehab games, lack of underlying theoretical frameworks, and concentration on clinical contexts such as physical activity and nutrition. The review concludes that future research should (1) widen the demographics to include females and elderly, (2) increase the number of participants in controlled trials, (3) lengthen both the intervention period and user–game interaction duration, and (4) expand the application of health games in new clinical contexts.
