Dances of Ikaria and Fourni

Terpsichori Greek Dance Circle proudly presents their 15th dance seminar:

with Vasilis Messaritakis

on 14-15th February 2015 in Brussels

TEACHER:

Vasilis is a musician, dance teacher, composer, song writer and choreograph. He holds a degree in Sports Sciences, with a specialisation in Greek traditional dances. He’s teaching dances in the Association „Artemis Tavropolos”, an association in Athens with the objective of safeguarding and transmitting the dance heritage of Ikaria and Furni. Vasilis is also responsible for dance teaching in other groups, like the Assocation „Chorostatis”, as well as the Association of Ano Liosia, which is especially active in promoting the dances of Arvanites, including hosting and participating dance festivals in this topic. Vasilis was responsible for the artistic conception of two CDs with dances and songs from Ikaria, for which he also composed new songs and wrote lyrics. He’s organizing the Traditional Dance Festival of Private Schools in Athens and he is also a member of the traditional music band „Chorostalites” where he’s playing percussion and island bagpipe. It is on Terpsichori’s invitation that Vasilis is coming to Belgium the first time, to present dances of his home island.

CURRICULUM: During this seminar we will immerse into the dancing traditions of Ikaria and Fourni. We will of course learn the various styles of Ikariotikos and many figures. We will learn some least known dances and we won’t forget from our repertoire the European dances that are part of every Ikarian feast. Fourni is a small island near Ikaria and presents different dances from those of its neighbour. And finally, in this seminar we will also do some dances coming from Asia Minor, since these have influenced the music and dance heritage of Ikaria.

PROGRAMME:

Saturday, the 14th February: 11.00 – 13.00 Dance class 13.00 – 14.00 Lunch break, everyone brings their own sandwich and drinks 14.00 – 18.00 Dance class 19.00 – 22.00 Optional – Evening à la Terpsichori (The theme of the evening is Carnival, so bring your Carnival clothes & mask) Sunday, the 15th February: 11.00 – 13.00 Dance Class 13.00 – 14.00 Lunch break, everyone brings their own sandwich and drinks 14.00 – 16.00 Dance class

PRICE:

Seminar: 50€ (40€ for Terpsichori yearly ticket holders).

Saturday evening: 17€ which includes entrance fee, warm dish, dessert and unlimited consumption of water, soft drinks and wine. You are free to bring accompanying persons for the same price, on reservation ONLY!

ACCOMMODATION:

Hotel Evergreen, Hotel Lambeau, Hotel Gresham-Belson (all three are ca. 15 minute’ walk from the place of the seminar). The majority of participants stay in the first one (also the closest). You can check rates on www.booking.com .

CANCELLATION:

Up to 3 weeks before: the total fee will be reimbursed.

Between 1 and 3 weeks before: the price of the meal will be withheld and the price of the class will be credited towards a future seminar (unless replacement is found).
