Cfda+ 2017 41 Voices In 2013, the CFDA identified a need to connect global graduating talent to our membership, so we created CFDA+ with the goal to provide visibility to creative capital from around the world. Since then, we have reviewed more than 1,000 portfolios, interviewed more than 600 recent graduates from 43 leading schools across 32 countries, and have spotlighted 245 graduates to a community of industry and education. Through these dynamic conversations, we’ve been privileged to gain not only a window into each designer’s personal identity, design process, and ethos, but also a first access view of the future of fashion. This year, we framed our questions openly, asking “I want to…”, “One wish I have for fashion’s future is...”, and “Future me will…”. The consistency of their answers netted to a narrative that underline the themes for 2017. Their voices created an empowered message of inclusivity, diversity, unity, and hope – with sustainability, technology, innovation, and culture mattering to the next generation now more than ever before. For our fifth year, we invite you to preview the power of “we” – 41 CFDA+ 2017 talents selected from 24 schools, who are unique in their creativity but share a collective zeitgeist – that we are all connected. CFDA+ is a curated platform to spotlight exemplary graduating talent. Selected CFDA+ 2017 Design Graduates receive a one-year profile-based showcase on CFDA.com, whose profiles are visible to the CFDA Membership community of 500+ leading American designers. Additionally, the CFDA is honored to continue its collaboration with Floriane de Saint Pierre’s Paris-based Eyes on Talents, which will generously spotlight CFDA+ and provide the talent with unique global exposure. The CFDA works to support and identify top-tier graduate and undergraduate talent from a global community of invited colleges. 02 03 A Aastha Shah | 06-09 Womenswear/Textiles S Academy of Art University L E Samuel Tick | 176-179 Alice Winzar | 10-13 Lela Thompson | 110-113 Footwear/Lifestyle Womenswear Emma Collins | 50-53 Knitwear Savannah College of Art and University of Brighton Menswear Drexel University Design Marist College O Alyssa Wardrop | 16-19 Loulou Hicks | 116-119 Olivia Bradley | 146-149 Shania Matthews | 180-183 Womenswear Erika Tompkins | 56-59 Menswear/ Streetwear/ Womenswear Womenswear/Knitwear Fashion Institute of Womenswear Sportswear University of Brighton Polimoda International Technology Academy of Art University Kingston University Institute of Fashion Design and Marketing Ann Xiao | 20-23 P Universal (Unisex) F Jamela Law | 80-83 Shelby Wauligman | 186-189 Ultimo Tafe Sydney Institute Textiles M Peggy Kuo | 150-153 Universal (Unisex) of Fashion Fang Katy Liu | 60-63 LaSalle College of the Arts Madeline Moore | 120-123 Textiles University of Cincinnati Textiles Universal (Unisex) Academy of Art University Anna Sajeski | 26-29 Academy of Art University Jasper McGilvray | 86-89 Columbia College Chicago Sidharth Chawla | 190-193 Knitwear Menswear Pierpaolo Grasso | 156-159 Handbags/Optical Drexel University University of Westminster Menswear/Genderfluidity Parsons School of Design Polimoda International G Jennifer Koh | 90-93 N Institute of Fashion Design Sophie Ward | 194-197 Gabriela Sacconi | 66-69 Womenswear Naeun Kim | 126-129 and Marketing Knitwear C Universal (Unisex) Parsons Paris Universal (Unisex)/Menswear Kingston University Carly Dean | 30-33 School of the Art Institute of Savannah College of Art and Textiles Chicago Design R Academy of Art University Y K Nicholas Yip | 130-133 Rachel Yoo | 160-163 Catriona Pringle | 36-39 Kaitlyn Fitzgerald | 96-99 Menswear Menswear Yiran Duan | 198-201 Womenswear/Knitwear I Childrenswear University of Westminster Rhode Island School of Menswear Royal College of Art Ian Richardson | 70-73 Parsons School of Design Design Parsons School of Design Womenswear/Accessories Nikki Kaia Lee | 136-139 Chloe Scott | 40-43 University of Westminster Kasubika Chola | 100-103 Womenswear/Textiles Rebecca Holmes | 166-169 Menswear Textiles/Denim Savannah College of Art and Womenswear/Knitwear University of Westminster Ilaria Meucci | 76-79 Kingston University Design Kingston University Z Footwear/Handbags Zimo Yan | 202-205 Christina Miyagi | 46-49 Polimoda International Kate Clark | 106-109 Noah Pica | 140-143 Ryan Zhen Yu | 170-173 Textiles Textiles Institute of Fashion Design Textiles Menswear Womenswear Savannah College of Art and Academy of Art University and Marketing Kingston University Rhode Island School of Design Academy of Art University Design 04 05 AASTHA SHAH* *Aastha Shah and Peggy Kuo are collaborators “I love cultures. THE NEW MILLENNIUM ERA: THE FUTURE OF TEXTILES By Sarah E. Braddock Clarke TOKYO ZOKEI UNIVERSITY – 23 June 2016 Going back to the 1960s (and 1967 to be precise) British fashion designer Mary Quant said: “Some day we will blow clothes the way we blow glass. It’s ridiculous that fabric should be cut up to make a flat thing go round a round person.” At the very end of the 1990s there were many predictions for what the clothing of the new millennium would look like - The French fashion designer Thierry Mugler said: “The future of fashion? It has none. The trend is no fashion. We are getting nakeder and nakeder.” Continuing with that theme the French philosopher Jean Baudrillard said: “In this new erotic world every illusionistic element is missing (…) the body is present, even over-exposed, but only as part of the technical equipment.” And British designer John Galliano thought that: “The only way to get forward in fashion is to return to construction.” While Karl Lagerfeld believes the future of fashion is in the textiles used… Slide List OPENING 1. A CONTENT ANALYSIS OF ADVERTISER INFLUENCE ON EDITORIAL CONTENT IN FASHION MAGAZINES by CANDACE CAMILLE WALTON (Under the Direction of Jose F. Blanco) ABSTRACT The purpose of this exploratory research is to address and analyze the amount of influence that advertisers have over editorial content in the media, specifically men‟s and women‟s fashion magazines. The sample consisted of a total of sixteen fashion magazines, with four different magazine titles (two targeted towards women and two targeted towards men) representing two different publishers. A survey was also conducted with a member of the editorial staff of one of the publications in the sample. Descriptive statistics (percentages) and SPSS correlation tests were used to test relationships among the variables and answer the research questions. The results yielded percentages that pointed towards editorial independence from advertisers, however, significant correlation was found between advertisers and editorial content as well. school talent speaks italian everywhere. In London as in New York, in Beijing as in Mumbai, the term ‘fashion-design’, together with ‘cuisine’, to tell you the truth, is synonymous with Italian style. The label ‘Made in Italy’ lends a certain glamour to or implies a certain value in any design, encompassing as it does a variety of products, styles, workmanship and details that are transposable and, in many cases, across sectors and disciplines. Unlike Istituto Marangoni, for those who do not work in the interlinked fields of fashion and design, there could be some doubt regarding their identification as a united historical-cultural front, one that is distinctive, national and composed of functionality, experimentation, entrepreneurial genius and craftsmanship: the Italian genius loci. Yet it is precisely this bridge, the project as a creative expression and its manage- ment as a business model, which has been the basis of the successful teaching methodology at Istituto Marangoni for almost 80 years: the school recognizes the pe- dagogic importance of teaching this combined special mix of ‘project + management’ and it was with this mix that a new distinctive, unique, personal and decidedly Italian educational model was born in 1935 in Milano. Since then, Istituto Marangoni has never ceased to believe in the value of proper training, constantly updating its programmes and courses, which strictly adhere to the evolving market and cultural trends in fashion, to be able to respond to the specific needs of a sector which is often overlooked in public education. Istituto Marangoni fashion schools in Milano, London, Paris and Shanghai have enhanced the talents of four generations of professionals; almost 40,000 individuals worldwide.
