THEOSOPHY AND THE ORIGINS OF THE INDIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS By Mark Bevir Department of Political Science University of California, Berkeley Berkeley CA 94720 USA [E-mail: [email protected]] ABSTRACT A study of the role of theosophy in the formation of the Indian National Congress enhances our understanding of the relationship between neo-Hinduism and political nationalism. Theosophy, and neo-Hinduism more generally, provided western-educated Hindus with a discourse within which to develop their political aspirations in a way that met western notions of legitimacy. It gave them confidence in themselves, experience of organisation, and clear intellectual commitments, and it brought them together with liberal Britons within an all-India framework. It provided the background against which A. O. Hume worked with younger nationalists to found the Congress. KEYWORDS: Blavatsky, Hinduism, A. O. IHR LENBACHHAUS.DE KUNSTMUSEUM IN MÜNCHEN MEHR MEHR FÜR DAS MODERNE LENBACHHAUS LENBACHHAUS DIE NEUERWERBUNGEN IN DER SAMMLUNG BLAUER REITER 13 OKT 2020 BIS 7 FEB 2021 Die Neuerwerbungen in der Sammlung Blauer Reiter 13. Oktober 2020 bis 7. Februar 2021 MEHR MODERNE FÜR DAS LENBACHHAUS ie weltweit größte Sammlung zur Kunst des Blauen Reiter, die das Lenbachhaus sein Eigen nennen darf, verdankt das Museum in erster Linie der großzügigen Stiftung von Gabriele Münter. 1957 machte die einzigartige Schenkung anlässlich des 80. Geburtstags der D Künstlerin die Städtische Galerie zu einem Museum von Weltrang. Das herausragende Geschenk umfasste zahlreiche Werke von Wassily Kandinsky bis 1914, von Münter selbst sowie Arbeiten von Künstlerkolleg*innen aus dem erweiterten Kreis des Blauen Reiter. Es folgten bedeutende Ankäufe und Schen- kungen wie 1965 die ebenfalls außerordentlich großzügige Stiftung von Elly und Bernhard Koehler jun., dem Sohn des wichtigen Mäzens und Sammlers, mit Werken von Franz Marc und August Macke. Damit wurde das Lenbachhaus zum zentralen Ort der Erfor- schung und Vermittlung der Kunst des Blauen Reiter und nimmt diesen Auftrag seit über sechs Jahrzehnten insbesondere mit seiner August Macke Ausstellungstätigkeit wahr. Treibende Kraft Reiter ist keinesfalls abgeschlossen, ganz im KINDER AM BRUNNEN II, hinter dieser Entwicklung war Hans Konrad Gegenteil: Je weniger Leerstellen verbleiben, CHILDREN AT THE FOUNTAIN II Roethel, Direktor des Lenbachhauses von desto schwieriger gestaltet sich die Erwer- 1956 bis 1971. Nach seiner Amtszeit haben bungstätigkeit. In den vergangenen Jahren hat 1910 sich auch Armin Zweite und Helmut Friedel sich das Lenbachhaus bemüht, die Sammlung Öl auf Leinwand / oil on canvas 80,5 x 60 cm erfolgreich für die Erweiterung der Sammlung um diese besonderen, selten aufzufindenden FVL 43 engagiert. -

He assembled a substantial library, of approximately 9,000 items, which has been preserved intact since his death. Most of Rudolf Steiner’s books are in German, his native language however there are books in other languages, including English, French, Italian, Swedish, Sanskrit and Latin. There are more books in English than in any other foreign language. Steiner esteemed English as “a universal world language”. The present paper identifies 327 books in English in Rudolf Steiner’s personal library. -

In the later work I have endeavored to set forth the general outlines of that knowledge concerning the higher mysteries of Nature which the following pages describe as possessed by the Indian " Mahatmas," or Adept Brothers. To that later work the reader whose attention may be arrested by the story told here must of course be referred ; but meanwhile, the present introduction to the subject may be recommended to public notice now in a more confident tone than that which I was justified in taking up when it was first put forward. -

RUDOLF STEINER (1861-1925) Heiner Ullrich1,2 A neo-romantic thinker and reformer Rudolf Steiner’s reforming ideas still have an exceptionally strong, practical impact today in many spheres, especially in education, medicine, agriculture and the pictorial arts. On the other hand, his theoretical scientific and philosophical writings have so far met with little interest and still less acceptance in academic circles. When his thinking does attract attention it becomes the subject of passionate controversy. Uncritical identification by his followers contrasts with polemic and sweeping criticism by the representatives of academic research. There seems to be no golden mean in the appraisal of Steiner’s conceptual world. One reason resides in the extraordinary variety and scale of his literary and rhetorical output.3 His often strange and esoteric diction places practically insurmountable obstacles in the path of scientific and philosophical analysis. What is more, few critical biographies have been written about Steiner as yet. Attempts to do so tend to resemble more the nature of hagiography.4 To avoid diminishing Steiner’s prestige, these works gloss over his frequent borrowings from other writers as well as any mediocre traits of his own character, and attempt to create harmony out of the evident discontinuity of his life’s work. -

JOSEF ALBERS BIOGRAPHY 1888 Born 19 March, in Bottrop, a small industrial city in the Ruhr district, Germany 1902–05 Attends the Präparandenschule (preparatory teachers’ training school) in Langenhorst 1905–08 Attends the Lehrerseminar (teachers’ training college) in Buren where he receives his teacher’s certificate 1908 Visits museums in Munich and the Folkwang Museum in Hagen where he sees paintings by Cézanne and Matisse for the first time 1908–13 Teaches elementary school for the Westphalian regional educational system 1913–15 Attends the Königliche Kunstschule, Berlin, where he studies art education and receives his certificate to teach. Frequents Berlin’s state museums and galleries 1916–19 Attends the Kunstgewerbeschule, Essen, while teaching in Bottrop’s public schools. Studies with Jan Thorn-Prikker, a stained glass artisan and drawing instructor. Begins making work in stained glass, as well as lithographs and blockprints, a selection of which are exhibited at the Goltz Gallery, Munich, in 1918 1919–20 Attends the Königliche Bayerische Akademie der Bildenden Kunst in Munich where he studies drawing with Franz Stuck and painting technique with Max Dörner 1920 Attends the Bauhaus in Weimar, enrolling in the Preliminary Course while pursuing his own work with stained glass 1922 Promoted to the position of ‘journeyman’, he reorganises the Bauhaus glass workshop. Designs and executes stained glass windows, and develops single-pane glass compositions. Around this time, he designs windows and furniture for Walter Gropius, the founding director of the Bauhaus 1923 Invited by Gropius to conduct the Preliminary Course in material and design at the Bauhaus. 1924 Publishes his first essay in a special Bauhaus issue of the Hamburg periodical, Junge Menschen 1925 Marries Anneliese Fleischmann, a student of weaving at the Bauhaus.
