Download Presskit Ben Santiago Follow Bio The only ever person to be conceived and born at the same illegal rave, Ben Santiago was destined to be a DJ from the very second he came onto this Earth. Ben’s transition from rave baby to fully functional Ibiza resident has had its ups and downs, with the DJ almost ready to throw the towel in on numerous occasions. However, perseverance, dedication and regularly bathing in bathtubs full of champagne (prosecco), has seen Ben rise to the top of his game and conquer all that has been put before him. After spending the first part of his life DJing in various London locations, Ben packed his bags and moved to Ibiza with dreams of becoming a world renowned DJ. Like so many who made the journey before him, Ben struggled to make an impact on the island’s DJing landscape and after just one season, he decided to look for Booking Info work elsewhere to subsidise his DJing lifestyle. Blessed with the gift of the gab as well as an excellent ear for music, Ben was quickly hired as the island’s only traveling saxophone Email salesman. It was doing this job that Ben met his future wife, Laura. Ben claims this was this [email protected] moment that inspired him to re-dedicate his life to becoming an international DJ, “It was love at first sight, she was just so lovely. I wanted to be a DJ so we could become a double act, Phone both inside and outside of clubs”. However, Ben’s boss at the time claimed it was the fact that 0034 971 80 33 83 he only sold one saxophone in an entire year that forced him to return to DJing on a full time basis. Since jumping head first back into the DJ game, Ben’s stock has risen one hundred fold.Regularly playing across of host of Ibiza’s, and Europe’s finest establishments, including; Cafe Mambo, Glitterbox, Hi, Ibiza Rocks, Pacha, Pikes, Privilege, Space. As well as a twelve year residency with Cream at Amnesia puts Ben firmly in the company of some of Ibiza’s longest serving residents. Performing as a solo artist, as part of the duet, Lovely Laura & Ben Santiago, which many Ibiza insiders claim to be the best double act to come from the island since bread and aliolli, and also as part of Melon Bomb, Ben is easily one of the industry’s hardest working DJs. With appearances at some of the biggest clubs and festivals in the world, it is widely believed that you are never more than twenty foot away from someone who has seen a Ben Santiago set. I use geographical literature on EDM to argue that its hedonistic spaces have been forged via cultural economic practices which I conceptualize as constitutive of a process of ‘accumulation by cooperation’. In numerous contexts, the people of EDM – the DJs, producers, MCs, artists, promoters, and ravers – have chipped in, worked alongside each other, collaborated, and shared ideas, emotions, and knowledge with a view to producing and re-producing cultural economies and hedonistic spaces shot through by a complex, contradictory politics. I. Introduction During the last 20 years or so and throughout the world, genres of music associated with the generic label ‘electronic dance music’ (hereafter, EDM) – such as ‘house’, ‘techno’, ‘trance’, ‘drum & bass’, and ‘dubstep’ – have emerged and become relatively popular and influential. These musical varieties are mostly made electronically by combining hardware such as samplers, synthesizers, and drum machines with sophisticated music production software operated on computers. Such technologies make it possible for an artist or pro- ducer to make EDM without knowing how to play a musical instrument – an odd idea in the geo-history of music. EDM artists combine technologies and their talents with a general determination to make audiences dance (or, as per some ‘downbeat’ or ‘ambient’ genres, to allow audiences to relax or ‘chill’ before or after they go out to dance) in late- or all-night events in nightclubs and ‘raves’.

  • The Politics of Partying: Electronic Dance Music As Collectivist Experimentation and Subversion
The Politics of Partying: Electronic Dance Music as Collectivist Experimentation and Subversion ISOBEL MOLONEY A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree BA (Hons) Communication & Media School of Media and Communication, University of Leeds May 2019 Word count: 11,877 Abstract This study examines how EDM events in Leeds function as a form of political action, using ethnographic research in the form of interviews and observations. This study looks at political action through the lens of Jacques Rancière (1999; 2006), who characterises it as a disruption of the dominant social order. The research also borrows from Elias Canetti’s (1962) crowd theory as well as varying conceptualisations of ritual. The study finds that EDM events are able to provide an opportunity for participants to experiment with collectivism in a way that subverts society’s neoliberal individualism. This is especially important for marginalised communities as a way of building solidarity and empowerment. Commercialisation, through the infiltration of brands and capital-orientation, threatens the politicisation of these events because it takes focus away from the collectivist experience. However, local collectives in Leeds further subvert this by using socialist organising structures such as being non-profit and the horizontal organisation of collectives. 1 Table of Contents ABSTRACT .............................................................................................................................................. 1 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
