Pioneer's International Music Summit Grand Finale Festival Gets Ibiza's
Pioneer's International Music Summit Grand Finale Festival gets Ibiza’s 2012 clubbing season off to an electrifying start Submitted by: Kate Gordon Thursday, 31 May 2012 31st May 2012, Ibiza: Pioneer (http://www.djsounds.com/)’s position at the heart of the dance music industry has been reaffirmed with this year’s International Music Summit (IMS) Grand Finale Festival in Ibiza’s picturesque old town. As the only contemporary music event to be held within the Dalt Vila UNESCO World Heritage site, the IMS Grand Finale Festival is a truly momentous occasion. It officially marks the end of IMS and the opening of Ibiza’s world-famous clubbing season. This year DJ E.A.S.E., of Nightmares On Wax, kicked off proceedings as the setting sun bathed the Balearic island in a golden glow. Performances from Disclosure, Seth Troxler, Loco Dice, Azari & III and Carl Cox took the energised audience into the night. The crowd then headed over to Ibiza’s iconic Pacha nightclub, where Pete Tong and Calvin Harris raised the roof until the small hours. The previous evening had seen David Guetta, Paul Oakenfold, Diplo, MINX and Goldfish take to the stage at Dalt Vila as enthusiastic fans lapped up the atmosphere against the stunning backdrop of the Ibizan harbour. Now in its fifth year, the three-day IMS is one of the dance music industry’s most influential events. This year’s summit featured keynote speeches from internet giants such as Google, YouTube, Spotify and Twitter and interviews with legendary producers Giorgio Moroder and Nile Rodgers. -

An Oral History of Berlin Minimal Techno
Menu Search Red Bull Music Academy Daily An Oral History of Berlin Minimal Techno A look back at the stripped-down subgenre that defined the German capital from 1998-2008 September 7, 2018 By Joshua Glazer In 1998, the rave scene that gripped Germany after reunification was at its apex. What had started in the literal underground spaces of post-GDR Berlin after the fall of the Wall had gone mainstream, with millions of young people celebrating the colorful culture of electronic dance music all across the country. But the techno utopia envisioned by many as the new millenium approached was already starting to come undone. The trend was swiftly co-opted – ironically, by some of the same capitalist forces that had defeated the communist system a decade earlier. The bubble soon burst, and many of those truly dedicated to the music were forced to rebuild. The result was something that was the opposite of rave’s over-the- top excess, a movement that idealized a minimalist aesthetic in sound, visuals and fashion. It was a lifestyle that resisted the unbridled exuberance of rave in favor of something more sustainable – and sustain it did, with tracks that filled whole sides of vinyl and parties that went on for days at a time. Berlin became the center for this new creative community, drawing in techno practitioners and aficionados from around the world who came for the party and stayed for the ease of living made possible by cheap rents and easy access to artist visas. “Minimal” became the buzzword around this scene, and while overindulgences were aplenty in freewheeling afterhours, the “arm, aber sexy” (poor but sexy) slogan coined by then-mayor Klaus Wowereit could not have been a more accurate appraisal of Berlin’s appeal. -

A Chat with the DJ - Apostille
[email protected] A Chat with the DJ - Apostille MB.. You Have very kindly agreed to do a mix for the podcast but I feel its always good for listeners to get to know you a little with a 5 step Q & A.. So we know that you play the deep, melodic and progressive style but when did you start to DJ and what made you take the step from punter to player ?? (as in the DJ kind) Apostille: My first ever visit to a nightclub was to see Paul Oakenfold at The Warehouse in April 1996. I was 16. My mum gave me and three mates a lift to the club and we were listening to Radio 1 in the car. Pete Tong played his essential new tune – it was Born Slippy. We get in and guess what, four hours later Oakey drops Born Slippy at prime time to a rammed club. Blew my mind. That was the moment I wanted to do be a DJ. My parents bought me some sketchy belt drive turntables for Christmas in 1996. By the end of 1997 I was playing small venues locally. That year I saw Sasha and Digweed touring Northern Exposure. I knew I liked that melodic genre, but when Paul Van Dyk came to town with his acid infused progressive trance I was all in on that sound. He drifted away from that sound actually and went more mainstream trance. I have never forgiven him! MB.. If you can share one musical memory with us, as a DJ or punter, which has lodged itself in the memory bank, what is it?? Apostille: For starters I have definitely had more fun as a punter than a DJ. -
The MFS Trip Into the History of Trance!
The MFS Trip into the History of Trance! Bittles‘ Magazine | Album Review Before the term Trance became something to be pitied, hated and despised as well as the dominant force in dance music it was seen as a creative revelation that brought the emotion back to House. The adrenaline- fuelled head-rush of rave was coming to an end, hardcore had become just too hard and the club kids were craving something new with which to get their chemical kicks. By JOHN BITTLES Trance came at just the right time to reinvigorate a dance music scene that had somehow managed to crawl up its own K-hole. This new style of music added a much needed melodic flavour to its processed beats. When combined with an almost religious spirituality that was perfect for ecstasy consumption and the hugging of complete strangers everywhere it was no surprise when it exploded the way it did. One of the very first proponents of this new sound was Berlin-based record label MFS! Masterminded For Success was formed in 1990 as a way to tap into the burgeoning electronic scene by East German label Deutsche Schallplatten Berlin. When the parent company folded a mere three years later Mark Reeder and Torsten Jurk didn’t lie down and cry. No, they very wisely took out a loan and did everything possible to ensure that the label they loved didn’t meet a premature end. All of which brings us to the rather fab X-Mix 1: The MFS Trip; a label compilation released in 1993 created to soundtrack the first in a series of computer graphic videos by video label K7. -
Richie Hawtin Is a Genuine Original. His Critical Acclaim Spans the Creative Realm of the Fine Art Community to the Technological Vanguard
Richie Hawtin is a genuine original. His critical acclaim spans the creative realm of the fine art community to the technological vanguard. Meanwhile, as a performing artist, he is constantly pushing conceptual frontiers, moving things forward, welcoming as many as he can to ideas and experiences that would have seemed pure science fiction when he began his career. Hawtin is British-born and Canadian-raised. He is the business mind behind Plus8 and MINUS Records, nurturing a plethora of talent from Speedy J in the early 90s to Gaiser in the 2010s. And, of course, he is Plastikman, perhaps that most of all, electronic musician par excellence, maintaining an underground agenda of avant-garde electronica over six albums (and two compilations). He returned spectacularly to the live circuit in 2010 with his Plastikman 1.5 incarnation which held its own among the new EDM generation of Skrillex, Deadmau5, etc, stars to whom Hawtin is both old guard ambassador and hero. It is not just the rising young talents who look up to Hawtin. Daniel Miller, founder of the seminal Mute label, referred to him as “a leader” and “a pioneer”, the New York Times called him “one of the electronic dance world's intellectual forces,”. However, it's plaudits from other areas that showcase the breadth of Hawtin's appeal. Raf Simons, former Creative Director at Dior, says he listens “to Richie Hawtin's music like others listen to classical music”, calling him “the Kraftwerk of today”. In 2013 Simons asked Hawtin to put on a special performance at the Guggenheim, New York's iconic art museum, as the centre-piece for their annual fund- raiser. -

The End of Time A film by Peter Mettler 114 min, English, Digital (DCP, Blu-ray), Canada, 2012, DoCumentary FIRST RUN FEATURES The Film Center Building 630 Ninth Ave. #1213 New York, NY 10036 (212) 243-0600 / Fax (212) 989-7649 Website: www.firstrunfeatures.com Email: [email protected] www.firstrunfeatures.Com/endoftime Synopsis "Recalling the work of Terrence Malick, Werner Herzog and the late Chris Marker" (Hollywood Reporter), Peter Mettler’s enthralling new film combines elements of documentary, essay, and experimental cinema to create a tour de force that challenges our conception of time — and perhaps the very fabric of our existence. With stunning cinematography and a knack for capturing astonishing moments, The End of Time travels the planet — from the CERN particle accelerator outside Geneva to the lava flows of Hawaii; from a disintegrating Detroit where Henry Ford Built his first factory to the tree where Buddha was enlightened. Both mind-expanding and eerily familiar, Mettler's provocative film explores the links between renewal and destruction, between primordial mysticism and the furthest reaches of modern science, giving the viewer a transcendent cinematic experience. Praise for The End of Time "Recalling the work of Terrence Malick, Werner Herzog and the late Chris Marker...THE END OF TIME Becomes immersive and hypnotic...a ravishingly Beautiful experience." – Stephen Dalton, The Hollywood Reporter "A work of vision...A gloBe-trotting cine-essay about time...poetic and lovely." – Adam Nayman, POV "Mettler's trippy
