Furthermore, Dahl proposes a model for understanding the genealogy of the royal family and other Ur III elite families, for which comparable data is not available. In chapters 1 and 2, after a brief introduction to the orga- nization of the Ur III state,2) the author describes the patterns of hereditary succession: lineal, when power is passed from generation to generation, versus non-lineal, or lateral, when power is passed within the same generation. Lineal succes- sion can be matrilineal or patrilineal, the latter can be further divided into succession by primogeniture and seniority. Dahl discusses the historicity of the so-called Sumerian King List and he questions whether the prevailing Mesopotamian sys- tem of succession, and in particular that adopted by the Third Dynasty of Ur, was strictly patrilineal primogeniture. Although all of the dynasties following the end of the Ur III reign adopted a lineal primogeniture pattern of succession, Dahl tentatively suggests that a system of seniority prevailed throughout the third millennium (p. 11). In chapter 3 Dahl provides an updated picture of the House of Ur-Namma, which lasted, according to Dahl, three gener- ations, Amar-Suen, Su-Suen and Ibbi-Suen possibly all being sons of Sulgi.

    DEDICATED TO MY PARENTS. THE FIRST CAMPAIGN OF SENNACHERIB, KING OF ASSYRIA. (B.C. 703-2.) INTRODUCTION. Cylinder 113203. TnHE text has been copied fromn a hollow barrel cylinder of the usual type, now in thle British Museum. The cylinder is about 9½inches long, the bases being 3- inches in diameter, the diameter of the thickest portion of the barrel about 4½inches, and the perforations of the bases about I inch in diameter. The clay is reddish in colour, and very soft in parts, and owing to this softness the text appears to have suffered damage when the cylinder was discovered. The scribe has not drawn lines across the cylinder, and in conse- quence many of the lines bend considerably. The writing is very neat and clear, and of the same style as other historical inscriptions of the reign. The first 14 lines are written in half lines, that is with a distinct break, as though forming part of a hymn, but from that point to the end the lines are continuous. The first half of thle first 16 lines is badly broken, the fine clay of the surface having been completely removed, perhaps by a blow from a pick. The first 9 lines can be partly restored from Ki. 1902-5-10, 1, a fragment of a barrel cylinder of different shape from No. 113203, which gives beginnings of the first 9 and last 16 lines of a duplicate text. No great interest has been dedicated to it. Only when studying the in herita nce right to the throne scholars have glancingly mentioned some thing about famil y relations. The ancient royal incest theory has attracted most attention. Royal marriage between brother and sister, father and daughter, mother and son, has been in vogue among scholars, though not generally accepted. This theory, being definitely challenged and contested, due to the lack of any textual base, has not been followed nor incorporated. With the scarce documental sources at hand, the Elamite family is introduced unadorned. From the texts it appears a surprisingly monogamous ro yal Elamite family. For about 2500 years of a history full of conflicts, they could defeat invades of their powerful neighbors including Sumer, Akkad and Babylon and kept protected their independency and identity, but finally they assigned their reign to Assyrian. Elamites kept some features of their civilization including matriarchy system (transfer of king parentage from mother) and also their religion. The remained evidences show influence of Elamite religion on Elamite kings and people and they also show that Elamite religion has common points and discrete features with Mesopotamian religion. However, powerful state of Elam had continued for about 3000 years, from 3500 BC to 645 BC. Key words: Elam; Religion; Society; Politics; Sumer; Mesopotamia 1. ABSTRACT This thesis examines the desire for contact with deities in Egypt, the artistic and textual expression of which can be viewed as characteristic of ‘personal piety’. The attribution of hearing abilities to deities through epithets and phrases is evocative of human attempts to communicate with the divine sphere, and the Egyptian evidence is presented. A case study of so-called ‘intermediary statues’, which claim to facilitate communication between human and god, offers an opportunity to investigate how some members of the elite adapted their artistic output to take advantage of popular beliefs, furthering their own commemoration. Sistrophorous statues (bearing a naos-sistrum) are well-represented in the intermediary corpus, and their symbolism is explored alongside the significance of statue form and temple location in the context of communication with gods.
